Do you have an Advanced Auto Parts in your neck of the woods. If so they Have Hardener for Acrylic Enamel Paint. Same stuff as the Majic. I REALLY encourage you to reconsider using it. It REALLY makes the Paint SHINE and IT Dries Quicker and Harder. I also learned on the roll n' Roll to have to rollers...One for applying the paint and one for going back over. BOTH have paint on em. The ONE used for going back over I KEPT WRAPPED in a WalMart Plastic bag to keep it from drying out and it worked great. I rolled about 4 sq ft. of paint then stopped and went back and did the second roll out of the bubbles. I got a VERY smooth surface with the
1 qt paint, 1 1/2 cups actetone, 2 oz hardener forumula. Up to you on the decision. Good Luck!! Looking forward to seeing your first finish coat!!!!

Yup, I'm going there right now, thanks. I went to tractor supply and they had some Valspar stuff, but it did not say for polyurethane, so I passed.

Thanks for the tip, got my rollers and several sponge thngies that I saw a guy on Youtube using.

Didn't realize you thinned it for rolling, Pettit says thinning not needed for rolling, it seemed thinner than expected when I opened them to check it out. Way thinner than any Rustoleum Topside I've used.Your formula seems pretty thin? I figured the hardener alone would thin it quite a bit...???

Hey Lakelover, according to my sources the Valspar stuff is the same, we can't get the Majic product in Canada, but they say the Valspar is the same type of product, ment for all oil base paints.

Valspar IS exactly the same stuff. In fact That's what I used. Wasn't sure if they had em in your part of the country.

:D:D:DWell I didn't have my glasses with me:D:D:Dbut did it say something on the can about stirring the Valspar for 30 minutes? Anyway, knowing that, I might make it to Tractor Supply once more.

(Mission failed at Advance Auto -- the closest one to me is not a great branch.)

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

CRAP!!!! NOOOO!!! Sorry bout that!!!! That's for Spraying. I would only use a 1/2 a cup of THEIR thinner per quart for rolling. That helps it flow a bit better. 2oz of Hardener is ONLY 1/4 cup so that will be just about perfect.

Yeah, I should have told you to call first, We only have ONE branch in Tulsa, that carries the Paint supplies. NO, I did not stir that long because I was only doing a quart. I stirred for 5 mins maximum. Remember you HAVE to use it ALL in 8 hours or it will go bad due to the hardener. But with the heat I PROMISE you, you WILL be able to put on another coat in 4-5 hours. It sets fast. MULTIPLE Thin COATS!!!!! NOT THICK!!! You might want to mix 2 cups of paint and 1oz of hardenener and a 1/4 a cup of thinner. that Way you WON"T have any left over. Trust me... Thin coats are better and it will Set up faster. You might be able to recoat in 3 hours with the heat today. I did mine @ 70 degrees and recoated in 4 hours.

:D:D:DHa ha ha ha, I wondered about that, it would be like water!:D:D:D That's funny. Well, I'll be near a different AA* before they close so I'll check there. If no luck, will most likely run to TS in the morning when they open.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

The first coat is on. I used Wood's suggested formula:

1/2 qt. Easypoxy
2 oz. Pettit Brushing Thinner 120/T-10
1 oz. Valspar Enamel Hardener

I'm glad I thinned it because it went on like a dream, once I got the hang of it. First coat took 2-1/2 hours painting time and I had about 1/3 cup left over. For me the roll + roll method works great, I could never master a brush for tipping. Also, the sponge on the stick things are invaluable for getting where the roller can't go and small touch ups.

Also did the splashwell and a section of the exterior transom board where it will show from extending it up for the long shaft motor.

As soon as I was finished the bugs and birds sent out word there was a party in town. The bird must have aimed very carefully to get such an angle to get under the tarp. This was on the very last section I did.

My masking was a little sloppy around some of the rivets. I can fix that up later.

Here it is. The color is Burgundy, but it is really more of a deep red. The color in these pictures isn't accurate, I'll try to get some better color-balanced shots later. Not bad for a first coat on the first attempt, I'm satisfied with how it turned out.

A little non-Pettit method on the splashwell, that will be my little experiment. I had to fix a bunch of dents and holes in it using thin aluminum and JB Weld, then stripped it to bare aluminum. I sprayed it with etching auto paint primer (gray, don't remember the brand), probably putting it on too heavy. I did that quite a long time ago. Then applied the Easypoxy directly on that after smoothing with a Scotch pad. Basically, the layers on the transom board red strip are: Epoxy resin>Rustoleum primer>Rustoleum Marine topside>Pettit 6149 white undercoater>Easypoxy. TMI?

OH MAN!!! I Told you it would roll n' roll like a dream!!!! You did yourself proud my friend!!! Wait till the 2nd coat goes down. RED is the hardest to cover so by coat #3 that thing is going to Look awesome. When it's dry a Spray Water Bottle and a scotch brite pad will take care of the BIRDS and the BUGS.

Thanks, your guidance & suggestions were most helpful & made the whole thing easier. No runs, no drips and few errors! A couple more coats over the next two days and we'll see how it looks. I was concerned about my prep being adequate since I never did anything like this before, but I guess it turned out to be.
