Thanks, just got done flipping it back over to finish bottom/sides sanding and then on to the paint. I've been working on it for 2 years, I think I have one of the longest running projects on here.:p

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Ha ha, thanks!

With all the other things on the to-do list today, about all I got done is thinkin'. I'm not going to paint the bottom, but I want it to look as if the whole boat is painted as it sits in the water. Only problem is, I don't really know where it will sit, since I've never had it wet yet!

I know the water line will go approx. along the border where I stopped stripping the paint, but not sure about the bow area. I marked out & drew a marker line to approximate my masking line - what do you think about the location? I just drew it straight, I could curve it but why get complicated, since it won't be visible anyway? That should be below the water line as it sits and even while running? I could probably even come a little further forward in the front. I'm figuring the less of that topside paint under water, the better. Could probably come forward to the "X" anyway.

Just finishing up the sanding.

Never having done this before, here's what might be a crazy question: When roughing up the old paint/bare aluminum, how careful do you have to be getting close to the rivets so the stuff will have proper adhesion? Is it critical? I'll be rolling/brushing on the Pettit 2 part etching primer and regular over-the-paint primer.

As y'all know, these boats have a zillion rivets, and there's a nice little round shiny, non-scuffed area around each one of them. It doesn't seem to me it would be all that critical. Am I wrong?

Wood, got any good weather yet?

Just to prove I've been working...

And another thing, when people say "use green tape" do they just mean the green stuff from HD or Lowe's?

Frog Tape is the brand name I believe. Lowes and HD carry it.

I'm not authorized to comment on Easypoxy adhesion

I hope to prove you wrong on the Easypoxy, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. (Only because I've invested in it already!):)

Woo hoo, the mailman just dropped off my factory Johnson Service Manual and in the first two chapters, it answers all the questions I had about mounting the outboard, specs and measurements, and what controls etc. I need and hooking them up, all in one spot!

It's true what EZ said, they are worth their weight in gold, and only cost a few more dollars than the multi-model Seloc books. Everyone should have one for their motor.

I have a great deal of appreciation for your restoration style...these other guys make me feel slow too:D

Carefull planning, patience...and lots of staring at the boat with an adult beverage help avoid problems;)

Good luck with the painting, I hope there's plenty of good adhesion in your future:D

Thanks, Huron. Yup, you're right, time for a thinkin' & starin' glass of wine, and to try to butter up the weather gods. I got a plan, the supplies & materials and the time. Just need the weather! Looks good on paper for the next week or so.:)

I took EZ's suggestion a few posts back and went on ebay and searched for my make/model number. There were several available, many with free shipping. Hope you can find yours. I think I paid around $35 if I recall correctly.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

The weather is cooperating today! Last night I dragged it to the middle of the yard where it's less likely that stuff will fall out of my numerous trees onto wet paint.

Off to an early start for the aluminum primer by a final wipe with a cloth and on to the Pettit 2-part primer, doing my best to follow their directions completely. No pre-wash was recommended. I taped off the borders and a couple other spots with the Frog tape.

Here's the primer:

wprimerABDSC_4030.jpg

The data sheet said you can split-mix it so I mixed up half a quart, using an old laundry soap measuring cup that I previously marked the 1/2 quantities on. The Part B activator is weirdly packaged. Inside that little top can is a sealed plastic pouch with liquid in it, kind of awkward to handle, but OK if you're real careful. I'll attempt to save the rest in a sealed plastic bottle for later use. You have to cut off the corner of the pouch and pour while trying not to drop it. Went OK though. Half amounts took 13 oz. Part A and 3 oz. Part B by volume. I then thinned it as recommended for rolling with 15% denatured alcohol.

I was surprised at how fast it tacked up, that's where I've got the darker overlaps, even at the 65 degree temp. Otherise after I got the hang of it, things went pretty fast. At these temps I can apply the undercoater in 4 hours. The trickiest thing was trying to get all the tops of the rivet heads that I had sanded the paint from.

Here's what I ended up with:

The 1/2 quart I mixed up did what I needed with a couple ounces to spare, so a little goes a long way. If I can do the topside using the remainder of the qt., I'll have a can of this expensive stuff left over. But better that than to be caught in the middle and run out.

Here's what's going on next:

wDSC_4031.jpg

The data sheet says to use it as an undercoater "whenever the surface to be painted is aged, cracked, checked, pitted, or in any way less than smooth". I think I qualify on some of those. I'll see how it looks after the first coat and probably will do a second coat before the Easypoxy aplication.

Keeping my fingers crossed on the weather!!

Looks like I may have to postpone this afternoon's undercoater plans. A "snowstorm" of white tree fuzzies has just blown in. Crap.

Well, Holy Gee Willikers, I shot the first coat of Easypoxy on her this morning with the Hardener and all I can say is WOW. 3 hours and she is Tacky another 3 and I think she'll be dry to the touch. I am VERY impressed with the Hardener. Paint tacks up very quickly and She is VERY Shiny. I will get pics up later today. I had "Cotton" Flying too, but cleared the garage out and shot her in the garage. Knee Brace REALLY helped my knee but still hurt like Heck bending low. Can't wait to shoot the second and third coats. Hope you get yours on soon.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Despite the fuzzies (they went away!?) and the wind that came up, I went ahead and got the first coat of undercoating on. I frist wiped down the old paint with lacquer thinner, being careful where the green ZC primer was, because it would remove that too if I rubbed too hard.

All went well for the first half (one side), and I was super-impressed at how easy it laid down and how well it covered evn the burgundy paint on the sides. Then, a bug of some sort harrassed me and I instinctively tried to swat it away and the roller went flying off my handle  and landed in the grass.

Not to worry, I had several more and put a new one on and my troubles began. The first one wouldn't turn on the roller handle, so I took it off, cleaned the handle with thinner until it sparkled, put another new one on and got it all saturated with paint. This one turned but not very well. I couldn't figure out what was going on and struggled my way through the second half of the job.

I think I've finally realized what happened - last time I bought the foam rollers at HD, it looks like I mistakenly bought the "better" grade rather than the "best" grade. So I gotta go tonight and get some different rollers. These "better" ones, besides not wanting to turn, seemed reluctant to really soak up the paint and I noticed that if I went over an area heavy with rivets, some little bits of foam were tearing off. Not good for a topcoat later.

I can fix things up when I sand before the next coat, but it sure was frustrating. It was almost going too easy!

Pictures a little later...
