OK, so I'm askin here...is the rub rail split at the bow and can you slip one side out of the bow cap? I'm just askin but I bet since you got the rubrail loose you already checked that, right??

Yup, there is a bolt thru the rub rail behind the bow cap, that's why I tried again to get it off.

I got thinking about this while reading another post about Marine Tex. I just wish I'd taken pictures while it was flipped, woulda been easier to see.

I've got a dent in the bottom of the hull right at the transom, looks like the PO encountered a good sized rock. It looks worse in the photo than it really is. The shadow in the top pic makes it look deeper:

It's about 1/4" deep, maybe a little bit more, and about 4x4". Should I bother filling it? Unless it'll affect performance in any way, it doesn't bother me to leave it alone.

In all honesty it probably will affect performance in a very minute way, like causing the boat to want to turn that way slightly. Like a miniature trim tab.

Would I try to fix it...absolutely not. I like the plan of leaving it alone. One thing about these old metal boats, you have to be able to tolerate minor imperfections here and there. At least that's my philosophy.:)

If it were a 'glass rig you'd be fixing it for sure, one reason I stick with tin.:D

Good luck with the painting, your prep looks great so far!

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I'm going to call the sanding on the topside done. As soon as I can get some help flipping it again, I can continue painting prep. I messed my back up muscling the boat around by myself, so now I'm a little sorer and a little smarter.

In the meantime I cleaned up & painted the corroded areas on the motor. It looks better but by no means professional. The Moeller paint was a close match, but not exactly, after the motor sitting out in the sun for all those years. I'm happy with it though. The areas that needed attention were the skeg, where the lower unit attached to the mid section and the lower area of the bracket.

Thanks. It's mostly below the water line, so I'll probably be the only one who notices!:)

Haha, you're very kind. The pictures look some better than the object! The original paint has a nice "patina".

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Here's a thinker. When I removed the prop, the castle retainer nut was only on finger-tight. I reinstalled it the same way and looked all over my Seloc manual for proper torque specs but couldn't find anything. Finally I remembered that I had bought an owner's manual back when I bought the motor and found in there that the proper torque is 120 in.lbs. I don't have a torque wrench, so will have to look into that further. I almost wish I'd bought an OEM service manual specific to my motor, the Seloc manual covers all 2 & 4-strokes 2002-07 and it's a pain to track down my specific engine throughout.

Get a manual on ebay. Those factory manuals are worth their weight in gold. search for "your year Johnson 50 manual"
