Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I've stripped about all I'm going to strip from the hull and I can start sanding tomorrow. I'm hoping that I won't have to do any stripping topside, but I don't know, it's in pretty rough shape but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I quit for today, I'm beat.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

On second thought, maybe I should not start sanding tomorrow but should flip it and see how the top's gonna go. It would be kind of dumb to paint the bottom then realize I needed to strip the top. And don't you need to do the aluminum prep pretty quick after the sanding so it doesn't have a chance to oxidize?

Could use a little guidance on this....

Hey, I'm proud of the fact that I remembered to move the cars further away each time I was spraying stripper off with the hose!!

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I plan to follow Pettit's recommendations for EasyPoxy (I'll be using roll & tip):

On bare aluminum areas:
1)clean up the metal as much as possible & sand
2)wash with vinegar & water (they don't mention this but I figure it can't hurt)
3)use Pettit 6455 2-part metal primer
4)use Pettit 6149 EasyPoxy undercoater
5)apply EasyPoxy

On the areas I'm leaving painted:
1)scuff sand
2)wash
3)apply 6149 EasyPoxy undercoater
4)apply EasyPoxy

Well LL, that sounds good to me. Are you going to use the Valspar Hardener in the Easypoxy?? I am!!!!

Well, I haven't decided on that yet. Does the aluminum need to be coated right after the vinegar wash is dry?

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I would let it dry for a couple of hours and then roll on the first coat of primer. The only thing that concerns me is I am NOT familiar with the Pettit 2-Part Metal Primer. Does it have the same properties as a Self Etching Primer??? I'm gunna do some research. I might even call Pettit tomorrow and do some ASKIN!!! Other than that I think you're GOLDEN!!!

Yep, I found it. It IS self etching. Looks like you are GOOD TO GO my man!!!!

Yup, thanks for that link, that's the printout I have but I hadn't bookmarked it. I'm kind of leaning toward not using any non-Pettit hardener. I think I'll follow their system & recommendations and see how it turns out. They said in an email that I could use the 6149 undercoater over the 2-part etching primer and also over the scuffed paint.

I don't know what I've been removing from my hull, but I can tell you it sure as heck was on there. The only reason I stripped the bottom is that the PO had painted it and there were several small areas where it was chipping off. I probably could have gotten away with spot stripping it, but what did I know?

Well, Staying with the the MFG specs is ALWAYS a good idea. I'm gunna do it because I am NOT afraid to have to strip it off and redo it all. I almost did NOT go with the Pettit and went with Auto Paint (Imron) but I thought, What the Heck I'm gunna give it a go and see how it holds up. The hardener may be great may not be. We'll see. I am EXCITED to see How your's turns out. I almost bought one just like her about a month ago. Just could not pull the trigger on a Tin Boat!!!!

Yeah it will be interesting to compare notes after we both have finished! Glad you're more adventuresome than I am. If I ever do end up painting it again, I think I'll go with Rustoleum just to see how it compares and since it's so popular around here.

Back when it was "the" technology, I did a lot of darkroom work that involved following the mfr's directions to the letter. If something screwed up, we'd change one variable at a time to figure it out, but only after being sure to follow the system. I guess that's the way I'm starting out with the EasyPoxy. Old habits die hard!

I predict that we will convert you one of these days.

Here's a little secret for ya:)-I decided to leave most of the bottom bare, the parts that aren't visible as it sits in the water. My 14' utility SC has no bottom paint and after 8 years it's still doing just fine. I just don't see any point in going to the time and effort of painting it. And then trying to maintain it.

I spent most of the morning adjusting the trailer & new board bunks, after flipping it and getting it on the trailer again.

Sanding sanding sanding today. I can't say enough good about the 3M half face respirator I got.

Last time I sanded, using a surgical mask (ineffective) I got sick for 3 days. Today is fine, a cheap investment worth its weight in gold.

I took another stab yesterday at getting that bow cap off, but again decided against forcing it for fear of breaking it. Next best solution - I took all the bolts out of the rub rail channel and popped it out so I could get a clean sanding edge under it. This worked pretty well and I was able to sand by hand up to the edge of the inner topside trim for good feathering there too.

Here it looks like some kind of Frankenstein, but that topside is smooth as a baby's behind.

Have you checked to make sure there is nothing on the inside holding that bow cap?? Kinda odd that it is being so stubborn.

I took out the two rivets and checked under the bow--didn't see anything in there. Others have had a lot of trouble with that too, and have cracked/broken them. It looks as though they sort of snap on over the channel.

The whole saga starts on this page http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309879&page=6, post #138. I thought I might be smarter about it now that another year has gone by, but I'm as dumb as when I tried the first time. But smart enough to know when to quit while I'm ahead.:)
