Hey LL

Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed your project and hope you and yours had a Happy Thanksgiving!!

I'm Just Sayin...:D

Thanks. Well, I don't know how I'm gonna survive the winter. I'll be back at it as soon as it gets warm enough, meanwhile, I'll just read & dream of better days I guess.

BTW, the back's all better now, on to a new injury!

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

At 73 you can hear me coming, with all the clicks pops and groans. This year I had to wait until the B/H was gone shopping to go up on the roof and clean the gutters.

Keep up the good work and stock a good supply of liniment.
Internal of course, like JD,

I have to admit, I did fall off my ladder a couple years ago (cleaning gutters) only it was more of a half fall-half jump when I was descending and it started to go over sideways. It really surprised me, that never happened to me before. It also surprised me how hard the ground has gotten to be. Luckily, no injuries that time. I admitted to the incident quite a while later, with not much reaction. (Phew!)

Re: The topside paint poll attached to this thread:

Rustoleum Marine 17 votes 42.5%
Interlux Brightsides 14 votes 35%
Pettit Easypoxy 9 votes 22.5%

I was a little surprised by the results and wonder about your reasons for your thoughts on the various brands. Obviously Rusto is quite a bit cheaper, that's a no-brainer, but found it interesting that Brightsides is so close in second place. Any personal thoughts?

I've also been researching HVLP sprayers, any thoughts there? Keeping in mind the budget, so I would be looking for something of worthwhile quality, but not sure I would ever need to use it again after this project. I have a brick house and only paint the trim, otherwise a shed I might paint, but other than that probably wouldn't use it much.

I can tell you I was very impressed with the HVLP sprayer I bought from HF. Very low overspray which means less paint loss. As far as paint, to each their own. I very much liked the Interlux Briteside on my Offshore (sprayed), and I liked the Rusto I did on my old Starchief (rolled & tipped).
There is $35.00 difference per quart in the two paints, and I think Rusto is easier to touch up, if that helps.

Thanks, & also for the opinion on the HF sprayer. I had a bad experience with HF recently and swore them off, but might consider trying again. I did check out your thread in my research, the paint job looks great. I don't have a compressor, so would need to buy that too and probably would have very little use for that later, although you never know, so I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on it. But don't want cheap junk either.

I would not invest in spraying equipment for your boat. Not when one can get such nice results from roll/tip (or roll/roll as the case may be). If you could borrow a buddy's compressor and then just had to buy a cheap spray gun well then that's different.

Wow Ez, it's not like you to take so long to respond. You must have pondered that for some time. LOL

Why does this thread pop up to the top every so often showing a new response when there isn't one?

One thing I am looking forward to, is spring when guys like Lakelover will get a chance to get back to work and update us on progress.

Every time someone votes in the poll. That's why I'm not a fan of polls.

OK, a new post....I didn't realize that ez, about the thread jumping up every time there is a poll vote.

Anyway, after a lot of research, I've decided to roll the paint on. Seeing what's available and reading lots of reviews, it just doesn't make sense for me to invest in spraying on such a small boat. Besides, being a "man of leisure" now, I'll have the time.

For the last couple days, suffering from cabin fever, I've been polishing my windshield and some chrome and aluminum parts. Even though it is missing a hunk out of one corner
wDSC_3507.jpg

and has several stress marks you can see when the light hits if just right, I think I'll use it for now and maybe try making a new one when I get ambitious. Cleaning it up with polishing compound worked out pretty well. (pre-polish photo above) I really want to get it on the water this summer.

BTW, I'm forever indebted to woodonglass for showing me this:

scotch-ball.jpg

It might get added to my survival list that includes duct tape, bungees, wire and penetrating oil.

I used the green ball on the aluminum for a nice brushed finish that hides the many imperfections better and a buffing wheel on the chrome. The Jetson light came out pretty good, but you can see that the bow light is pretty well pitted.

Here's the other progress I've made this winter:

More work on the windshield frame...it looked like a tree had fallen on it and besides this bend on the end, the top was bowed up in the middle by about 1/2".

After reshaping the end with a vise, holding the channel open with pieces of metal, I clamped it onto my work table and carefully rebent the top bit by bit & checked with a straight edge. The work was very gradual because I was afraid it would suddenly kink with too much pressure. Finally got it straight along the top within about 1/8" and called it close enough.

Anybody know where I can get some of the small clips that fit in the channel to tighten up the plexi fit? I have a few in there-they look something like this, about 1/2" long, spring metal. If I can't find any I can scrounge around and find something else to use.

How about rubber channel like they use on windows? A glass shop? An auto parts store? or JC Whitney

I searched the heck out of Google & came up blank, but I'm sure I can find something. Just thought I might get lucky. Probably lots of alternatives.

What thickness plywood did you use for the floor and is it curved? Just bought a 64 15ft. Jet with no wood, It has all been stripped out. Thanks

Hi Run It,
I used 1/4" ext. plywood that I sealed with epoxy resin and then painted with Rustoleum Marine. I added Rustoleum anti-slip to the top. I put it in curved, like the original was. With 1/4", it was not too difficult getting it to bend while riveting it down.

Things are about to get moving again here in upstate NY.

If you can. start a thread and post pictures of your Jet so we can have a look at it. I think it'll be a real fun boat when it's finished.

Her'e another good Jet thread:

Who can tell me---

Here's the back corner of my rubrail, with a screw holding it in. If you've had your bow cap off, is there a screw in the front too? When I take the back screw out, it still doesn't want to come out.

My rubrail insert was a continuous - all the way around. I got that screw out and then very carefully pried it out of the rail using a flat screw driver from behind. I would not have been able to slide mine out, kinda had to be pried out.

On the Islander I was able to slide out most of it, but, it's just a little different design.

I think that is what you are asking? Does that help??

Cheers man!
