Yup, but it's just getting too dang cold to work outside. Metal tools....frozen fingers with no feeling...hypothermia....I'm just a wimp! I do better when it's 90 out.

I want to touch up the paint on my motor. Here's a shot I took of it just after I got it, I've cleaned up the upper area on the leg substantially since then.

What I've been wondering is whether the chipped paint on the joint area where the red lines are should be a warning about anything in particular. Seems like a rather odd wear pattern I've never seen before. Maybe this photo shows it a little better:

What do you recommend for best match on the paint color? I don't want to repaint the whole thing, just touch up the chipped/worn areas.

LOL I looked back at your earlier posts and thought you still had the old West Bend motor that came with the boat when you bought her. I would still use the Moeller Paint, ceptn I would use the Johnson Paint for that Year.

I agree with you LL, the corrosion there dosen't look quite right. Maybe you should post a pic of it on the motor forum and get some opinions. I can't remember seeing a motor with that before. Rather be safe than sorry.

I wouldn't be overly concerned. That motor clearly sat down in the water for some time (the "damage" to the bottom half of the mounting bracket/TnT is telling). Clean it up and paint it. Separate that lower unit and check things out in there and change your impeller while you're at it.

I bought the motor from a boat rental place and it did mostly sit on the boat down in the water. I don't see any tool marks or anything in that area, my thought is that it just started because it's an edge that may not have been originally painted just right. Like you say, there are other similar areas that would indicate just some surface corrosion. Just thought I'd ask. Even though I test drove it before buying it, I'll change the impeller when I get to that point.

Wind helps lower boat onto trailer

Wind helps lower boat onto trailer

An unexpected gust of wind helped lower the boat while I was in the process of jacking it down onto the trailer.:D Luckily, I was just eyeballing things and figuring at the time, and not in the way. It happened in slow motion.

wDSC_3086.jpg

All's well that ends well, it actually sped up the process. One thing I discovered is that the boat is not as heavy as I thought it was and I got it up on the trailer pretty easily, once I had slid it flat onto the ground. The tilt trailer helped.

My previous measurements were all off and I have to move the winch post toward the back after having moved it forward. A couple more keel rollers, new bunks and some adjusting and I'll be all set. Tomorrow I can work on cleaning up the rusted steel wool stains on my interior paint job, and it will be ready for my two sons to help me flip & lift onto its winter home when the younger one comes home from college for Thanksgiving.

I don't know how anybody else feels, but I say 4 p.m. sunsets are depressing.

Yup, 4 p.m. sunset depressing. I am for eliminating daylight savings. Not "natural."

When you flip the boat will the convex bow decking cause a problem? I can't see any sawing on the cross members to accommodate it.

Like the portable rolling rig.

Rather than get that fancy, I just thought I'd put some shims under each side as needed.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I got impatient (who, me?) waiting for my sons to both be home at the same time, so I went ahead and tried flipping it by myself and found out that one person can do it alone easier than I thought. Don't know if you could with something heavier than a 15 footer though. I just used the trailer tilt and pushed it off onto the ground; the hardest part was the initial lift onto its side. Then balanced while I walked around to the other side & lowered it onto the ground; lifted up one end at a time onto the frame & jockeyed it into position. Tonight my back will tell me whether this was wise or not.

Hibernation time now, I won't be doing much until next spring. This is the first real good look that I've had at the bottom and for its age, there are no major dents to speak of, just plenty of scratches and scrapes. The biggest dent, about 2.5" diameter, is right on a rivet, so I'll pay close attention to that even though I've put Gluvit on the inside. The shape of the hull is great though.

I'm not really crazy about painting in general, so now I've got the winter to consider how to proceed.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I sure wish my FG Hull would be that easy to flip. I'm hopin that over Thanksgiving I can talk all the relatives into helping me flip her and lift her on to my cart. It is supposed to be 40 degrees in the afternoon so we'll see if I can get enuf liquor in them to get em out in the cold for 1/2 and hour or so. Glad your flip went smooth. I hope your back "Wakes Up" welll in the morning.

I'm just sayin...:D

Good luck with that, I was lucky to have a good day with 55? today. My back is already telling me maybe I should have waited. Gotta stand up straight though, don't want my wife to know how I screwed my back up. She already doesn't like it when I go up on the roof! She'll worry while I'm home alone all day.

Yeah, I turned 60 in Sept. and my wife is ALL over me about the boat and how I should sell her and forget about the restoration but... I got a shot of cortisone in my shoulder and my gall bladder removed and I feel 10 years younger so... can't wait to get her flipped and start sanding the hull in preparation for glassing and painting next spring.

I'm just sayin...:D

At 73 you can hear me coming, with all the clicks pops and groans. This year I had to wait until the B/H was gone shopping to go up on the roof and clean the gutters.

Keep up the good work and stock a good supply of liniment.
Internal of course, like JD,
