Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Hey mick gongrats on the splash looks like fun. as far as the questions about the lu and ph fix the lu first your right it will most likley go out befor the ph. working on the drive train is not any harder than all that work you did on the boat you just have to get out of the denial stage and get to work. take is slow. take pictures of everything as you take it apart use those cheep glad tubs to store nuts bolts and small parts and lable everything. You may still be able to find new oem parts if not look long and hard on ebay or on these sites:
fairwindsmarina.com
salvagemarine.com
marinepartsoutlet.com
outboardexchange.com
and get you non seloc manuel for your power train it will give you all the techincal data tork specs gaps....

No lake today. It was raining all night and today. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and 92 so we should be on for tomorrow!

Thanks guys for the pointers!

Well I have been following this thread since Saturday last, and all I can say, is WOW, you did one heck of a job on that boat, the last one I did was a '62 Seaswirl and I know the feeling of that first splash...Congrats, I can only hope my "New" project will come out 1/2 as good as this one did..I am just starting in on a 69 Chrysler Del Ray aluminum, which is going back to showroom trim...

Anyway again, hell of a nice ride, you did good!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks Guys!

Mtguy- good luck on that resto- should be pretty sweet when it's done!!!

Today was the first day out for the wife and kids. They had a blast driving around, fishing a little(my daughter caught a sunny:)), and we did some swimming. After 4 hours they were both pooped! My little guy even fell asleep on my wife when we were just running up and down the lake. Then my daughter put her head down and she was twitching before you new it!

It was definitely a fun day out on the water. The lower unit was thumping quite a bit more today at slooooow speeds. I went down to the boat place and they made some adjustments for me on the cables. He looked for the clutch dog and it's cradle but they are on the vintage list so he has to do an Evinrude search for them. He gave me the part numbers as well so I could post them on the engine forum on here. I will post that stuff later- I left it in my truck.

Glad you had a good time. There is just something about having young kids in the boat after a long day of fun. That hum of the motor, the slight vibration, and wala............they are out. Good times for all. Glad they enjoyed it.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

If anybody comes across any of these engine parts let me know. They are in my dealers book as "vintage" so they have to do a search for them. I asked for the parts and the part number so I could ask on here. I am going to pm FR also about them.- Thanks

307095- Shifter Clutch Dog
307090- Cradle for Clutch Dog
377870- Forward Gear or Reverse Gear (they will just remove the bushing)
These parts will be for a 1960-1963 V-4 Speedifour or Starflite Manual Shift- NOT Selectric Shift

Thanks Guys!

I've personally had a good experience with Twin City.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks guys for the leads. A guy on the engine forums gave me a link to this site as well
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...evinrude-johnson/ITEM_2518/ITEM_251800001.htm

They have everything I need in stock. Lets just say I hope I don't need a new forward gear- that costs $429.13!!!

It's $125 for the clutch dog, and $18 for the cradle.

The guy at my boat place said he is going to do some more searching to see if he can find the stuff cheaper for me. I told him straight up- I don't have the $ for a new forward gear and he said if it needs it he will see if he could get it machined for me instead of going new.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Those are hardened gears, including the dog. Machining doesn't work well, so don't let him lead your wallet down that path. There are two "ears" on the clutch dog, normal wear situation is the top edges on both ears get worn down (corners get rounded) from people grinding the dog/gears through slow shifting...trying to ease it into gear...no bueno senor. Correct way to shift is to idle back to shift speed/rpm and snap it in gear smartly in one motion...then off you go. If your forward gear and clutch dog ears are obviously thrashed...doubt it since it stays in gear at higher rpms...I'd look for a combo out of a used LU, or a new clutch dog/cradle and decent used F gear out of a donor motor. Just my .02 cents. Good to hear that the fam enjoyed their first voyage. You're in the catbird seat now...they'll be encouraging you to work out your motor snags so everyone can go again.

micks110,

What kind of nap roller did you use to apply the EasyPoxy? Maybe I missed it in this thread. I'm using EasyPoxy if I can ever get done with sanding. lol!

Hey Mick, sounds like a great family day on the boat - makes all that time, money and effort worth it eh? Good luck with the new "old" parts, looking forward to seeing you post that all's well and no more clunking! :D

Wow...you have one big project and I compliment you on your desire to take on such a task...be careful with your heater, they do put out some very serious heat and fast too. Good Luck!
