Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

time to go shopping on cl or ebay you can find the parts and do the rebuild it is no that hard if you have the book and a streeing wheel puller. Or find one wth a bad LU and rob the ph off of it Decarb and go to the lake.

I have also known some guys who hone the cylendar and put in one replacement piston and had goood luck. the only problem with that is it can shoot the compression in that one cylendar over the 90 like the rest. Then, well you have the same problem just opposite.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Got the boat back today:D

We had her running a few times in their tank and everything is working. We started and stopped her a bunch of times and she shifted gears nicely too.

So that means one thing, well actually a couple things- Get the seats in tonight, get all my cables and stuff back up in the gunnel, fill her up tomorrow morning, and hit the water!!!!

I'll post her with her seats in later. I gotta add some more epoxy to the brackets and then paint them too before I put the seats in.

It's a bit of good news. Hopefully you will get the summer out of it. Good luck. I hope it all turns out good for you.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

thanks guys- I'm working on her now. I got the cleats on(pain in the arse because I've been doing everything on this boat nuts and bolts- no screws), got my bearing buddies on, and some other small stuff. I'm about to do the seats and then the fish finder and speedo mounts.

LOL!!! Arch- after dropping hundreds of dollars over and over again during this project- I realized tonight during dinner at 6 that I never bought the plugs!!! So I ran out the door and the wife yelled. The boat place I go to closes at 6. I get there at 6:20 and it's all locked up:( I was fuming- then I remembered the other boat place further away. I called them and they were open until 8:) I ended up getting home after 7:30- the wife was obviously pissed but now the trip is still on:)

Ok gotta get back to work. My buddy Jarad and I leave at 8- that's about 7 and a half hours away!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Well it was a fun day at Beltzville Lake! We were on the lake for a little over 5 hours. I have a bunch of pics and 4 videos.

Launching the boat was interesting- the boat went in fine but being my first time on a boat I had a hard time getting it to the dock. I eventually got it close enough that my buddy Jarad was able to get in.

We had a good day driving around and exploring the whole lake and all its fingers. We even beach it in a little cove and swam for a little- oh and I jumped off a big rock! That was scary.

We had some throttle issues in the beginning and she was only running about 13-14 mph. After a bit I adjusted the throttle cable and we got it to about 21-23mph and about 2400rpm. I guess that's not to bad with only 3 of 4 cylinders running. The guys at the boat place say I should only get about 30-32 out of her if all 4 cylinders were working properly. There are some issues that I am going to have to address because you can feel her lagging quite a bit until she gets up to speed. They have an 80hp 1963 evinrude there that they may give me for a couple hundred that has equal compression in all 4 cylinders. The only thing is it is electric shift. I'll be addressing that over the next couple months.

Here are the first couple vids.

Nothing like making adjustments on the water!

All in all- it was a fun day. The motor always turned back on and we shut her down quite a few times to do some fishing.

Loading her back up---- that was interesting! I almost t-boned another boat that was loading up- she shut down on me when I idled down and she started drifting right towards another boat but Jarad jumped in front right as I got her fired back up and thrown into reverse. I definitely need more practice at loading her up and getting up to the dock!!!

Here are the other vids of fishing and having some fun running into other boats wakes.

Here's from 2 nights ago. This is the bracket they put together to make the rotary steering work on and older motor.

Bearing Buddies installed

Got both the speedo and fish finder installed and use 4200 in the screw holes. They both worked great on the water today too. They kick up some water- you can see in the one video but they both work great.

I also got my other Tee Nee stickers on

Hey Micks I have been lurking for some time...
you KICKED BUTT on this resto!!!!! ROCK ON! super duper job! she looks perfect with the colors and the way she looks on the water, happy to hear your motor is running like a sewing machine! you are one in 100 that actually fiinoishes and does an amazing if not meticulous job........ you did a bang resto job and should be very proud! ps you will be an old hand at docking soon enough! and best advice I got for a good time at the lake is leave all problems and complaints at home and enjoy your water time! :D

have a great summer enjoying the coves and new beaches! :D :) :) :D

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Way cool...pix and vids. She looks great on the water and runs out well, too. Wonder what the comp would be in the down cylinder after a decarbing? if you're getting 20+ out of her with one damaged jug and two BOBs (big ol boys) on board, that's good. Hope you resolve your motor prob soon, but in the meantime I'd get the fam on the water so they can see/enjoy all your work, too. Watch the ramp/dock nutters when you're loading/unloading...that's where the potential for boat damage is highest.

Hey mick, I,m at the lake....so I can't get the pics to down load, but I'm glad you got her wet! You'll get the hang of it, just takes some practice. People here fight over the camping spots next to the ramp.....hours of entertainment!:D

That is sweet. Great looking boat, motor and trailer. Very impressive. Motor runs decent for 3 cylinders. Congrats again.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

TM- technically I would be considered one of those "boat ramp nutters" right now since I am really wet behind the ears:D

Thanks guys for the comments!

As far as the motor goes- I have a couple different options. They have an 1963 or 64 rude at the boat place that has equal compression in all 4 cylinders. I'm trying to get them to give it to me for next to nothing. Right now they want $600. The only thing different is that it is electric shift. Other than that, I can just put my cowl on it and spray the lower half and you wouldn't know the difference. I just want something that is period to the boat, gets me to 30mph, and is consistent running from the time you throw the throttle forward.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Micks,

It did my heart good to see you on the water, enjoying the fruits of your labor. The Mechanic work on those old outboards is NOT brain surgery and would make a nice winter project that would NOT take the kind of time that the boat did. You might even enjoy it. It would really be nice to have it all original but you do what you think is best for you. My health has not been good the last couple of weeks so I have not done any work on the boat. I hope I get to feeling better soon so I can get started. Glad you enjoyed your time at the lake.
