Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks Guys!

I got the hatch door in tonight. That was a PITA with the seats in to drill all the holes, line everything up, etc... It's not the prettiest thing in the world but it does the job. I used bolts and nuts on the door itself so if I ever need to work up under there I'm not laying on the door.

Matt- I used the tank that my neighbor bought previously for it. It's a 16 gallon tank. Before that they used the small tanks in the back. Here is a pic

Woody- sorry to hear about the health- hope you get better soon and get back on her. That is what I'm figuring with the motor as well- If she makes it through the summer I will most likely be doing the work myself and rebuilding her.

Lime- We gotta hook up over there sometime. I wonder if you know my cousin Brad- he is over there all the time on the weekends with his wife and dog(s). For now- I'm going to stick to the weekday trips to avoid the congestion since I have a smaller boat and I'm still wet behind the ears unloading and loading. It's nice too that both my wife and I are school teachers so we have off during the summer.

I am planning the first family trip over there early on Monday morning to spend part of the day on the lake with the wife and kids!

Like a champ!!!!!!. Enjoy Monday with the Wife and kids. Don't be mad when they are not quite as excited about how the boat performs as you are. To them it is just a boat, to you it has been the last 6 months of hard labor. Enjoy It!!!!

Here are a couple pics for you woody- you know, to keep you inspired! We spent about 2 hours just driving around exploring the fingers of the lake.

A second boat ramp I didn't even know was there. I think this is where I'm gonna launch from because it didn't seem near as crowded as the main one.

Nick- Yeh, right now the wife is still up in the air. Hopefully tomorrow will be a great experience out on the water for the first time. This is the first time on a boat for my wife and kids. Actually, my wife has been on a couple of deep sea fishing trips when we were younger- and she got sick everytime:eek:

Mick,

When I put in my depthfinder the transducer was kicking up a lot of water also. I put a glob of silicone in the gap between the transducer and bracket and the spray went away. The water would go over the transducer and just shoot straight up through the bracket into the splashwell.

Now that's a nice ramp! Here in Oklahoma we got some ramps that you need a 4 wheel drive to launch from they are so steep. That one is nice and flat. Nice looking lake. I envy you. Enjoy while you can.

Mick, nice video! It almost sounded like you were in OK from the wind noise in the video where you were fishing! I really don't think you want us to send you our weather....I had 10" of rain at my office on Thursday! We have a contractor from Idaho here on a project...he is convinced that the end of time is coming after enduring a year of our weather! lol! Really sweet looking lake by the way, enjoy it....hope you get the kidos out there soon!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks for the tip Frank!

Thanks Andrew- it is pretty rewarding:D

Arch- We had 5 inches of rain the other night too, but now it's hot and dry again. As far as the wind in that one particular video, I noticed that too. Actually, there was no wind at all- I must have had my hand near the speaker or something to cause that to happen.

Woody- That ramp is the secondary ramp at the lake. The main ramp is pretty daunting when you drive up to it. Like you said- you pretty much need 4 wheel drive to go up and down it!

Change of plans for tomorrow. The wife wants me to go out again with Jarad to "get some more practice." SOOOOOO- Jarad and I will be leaving tomorrow at 6:30 to do some more fishing and cruising around- oh, I mean "more practicing:D:D:D"

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

By now you should be on your way to "practicing". When I bought my boat, the one agreement between the wife and I was that as long as we did not have previous plans she could never complain when I took the boat out fishing. It has ben 5 years and she has not once complained (at least to me) about me going out. So if your wife wants you to "practice" more then by all means........get at it.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Hey Thanks Guys!!! Jarad and I had a great time on the lake today and I got alot of good "practice" in! Actually we got skunked fishing again except for the 6" perch Jarad caught. I firmly believe that fish finders have something built into them that they beep like crazy and show fish on the screen but as soon as you kill the engine the thing stops beeping!!!

I futzed around with the throttle a little more today and we got it up to 26mph! We had some fun cruising around again and loading and unloading went ALOT better today at the other ramp.

I have a video that I will upload and post later- it's just when I was making some adjustments on the throttle while we were cruising.

The thing I'm more worried about know is not the piston but the lower unit. Sometimes it "thumps", more so when we are cruising at slow speeds. The guys at my boat place say that it is just jumping out of and back into gear and I shouldn't worry to much about it with the older motors.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

That thumping is the clutch dog and gears disengaging...not good and not normal, even on the older motors. Wear from slow/grinding shifting wears on the clutch dog and gear teeth. Not an expensive fix but common on well-used veteran motors. It will get progressively worse until it won't stay in gear at higher rpms. Might check your gear shift lever for slop...most are adjustable...it should firmly engage both F and R gears when the lever is all the way forward or back, with little or no play.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks Bob! It is nice cruising around on the lake:D

TM- That is what the guy at my boat place said it was- the clutch dog. Is this a fix I could do on my own??? Today on the water it didn't seem as persistent on the first day out but it is still there- and it is most persistent at lower no wake speeds. I can say that it has never slipped out of gear or not allowed me to stay in forward or reverse. I said to Jarad today that I am more in fear of that going before the piston/cylinder goes. I guess I will talk to my guys at the boat place about looking into getting the clutch dog fixed if it is something that I can't do on my own- let me know what you think- Thanks again for your info!

Here is the video from today tinkering with the motor. Like I said in my ealier post today- we got her to 26 mph and there is still room on the throttle to get a little more out of her. You can see the lever in the video were I move the arm and we get a little more power out of her. I haven't played around with it at home yet to figure out how to get that extra 1/4". The throttle cable is at the very end so I can't make any more adjustments on that. There is a steel control arm that has two screws in it that can be loosened to adjust the steel arm. That may be the ticket but I want to take it to my boat place to have them look at it before I do something that I shouldn't:rolleyes:

Tonight I Made rod holders for the passenger side of the boat. I have to epoxy them to seal them, epoxy them to the wall, and then prime and paint them. These will get the poles we aren't using off the floor.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

It's not hard to do the clutch dog, the trick is finding one for a motor that old...takes some patience. You can do this, or have the shop guys do it...not that hard. I would have them check for slop in the shift lever/linkage first though...my experience with bad clutch dogs is a banging/thumping sound as it jumps out of and into gear at higher rpms...never seen one do this at no-wake speeds but I am no expert. Might consider sending a PM to F_R on the Iboats forum...he is the expert. If there is no linkage slop, I would suspect/check/change the clutch dog...sometimes that means replacing the worn F or R gear, too, since they mesh to provide power.

Have a good time, make sure everyone is wearing vests (including you) and bring lots of sunscreen. The kids won't want to leave.
