    1974 Merc 200 20hp pull cord broke

I don't know what the "dill" is but here's a diagram of the parts - you have to bend a tab on "2" down then hold the screw in the nut while you turn the nut clockwise do this carefully with something under part 15 so the spring doesn't fly out. Keep the assembly together while you unwind the old...

    1st boat 73 merc 850 wont rev.

There are 2 bearings in the distributor housing that are sealed - permanently lube ones 45 yrs ago, so maybe the bottom one is leaking (Nr.22 in diagram) if this is the case the bearing will seize and and the timing belt will break.

    starting '71 135hp

You have to connect + power to the switch box (red terminal should be connected all the time and white) and ground the whole motor, you also have to advance the throttle lever above the cable attachments on the left side and use the manual choke; this is not a good idea you should connect some...

    1st boat 73 merc 850 wont rev.

You can run in F only but you should have N too for safety, I've worked on many Mercs and this is weird; the image below shows how the shift is done - the shiftshaft turns CCW to push the shift dog into the reverse gear then CW to go back to N;F those are tough parts and can take a lot of abuse...

    1st boat 73 merc 850 wont rev.

The idle screws should be set 1 1/4 turns out then with the motor in F in the water at about 800 rpm turn them slowly in and out until the motor runs smoothly then give it full throttle and see if it accelerates smoothly, if not give them a 1/4 turn more. I still think that the throttle is not...

1975 500 Powerhead removal and general work.

The choke is supposed to be stiff so it doesn't fall down, here's a wiring diagram the only black wire is a large gage one that grounds the engine.

1150 power trim and tilt hoses

This is my factory bracket (drawn from memory) it can be easily made from 1/8" aluminum and will provide a solid mounting considering the G forces involved.

1150 power trim and tilt hoses

Bolting the unit to the transom can cause rotting where the bolts break the fiberglass, and may pull out if you hit big waves and don't sit the unit on the stainless steel part of the hose. Just connect the hoses to the outlet which put them closest to their ram - make sure that there's slack in...

    Rebuilding 1982 Mercury 50HP 4 cyl.

You can put the crank and pistons in by hanging them from the ceiling above the block on a chain with hooks; you can lower the assembly one link at a time while squeezing the rings in with your fingers on each piston. A dealer might do the final insertion for you reasonably priced. Here's a guy...

67 Mercury 650 complete rewire Killswitch question

No you shut the motor off by cutting the power to the white wire - the red wire should still have +12v; if you disconnect battery from the rectifier while engine is running you can damage the rectifier.
  15. merc850

    Can't shut off 1977 1150

On that motor the white wire on switchbox (4 terminal side) carries +12v when motor is running, to stop it the switch cuts off the power 0v so the switch must be wired wrong but don't ground it.

    Mercury 650 Rotted Trigger Wiring

Yep it's sparking; Also look in the faceplate for the plastic pointer - I'm posting the timing instructions you'll have to use a pen in the 1st cylinder and turn the flywheel until it reaches TDC then you align the small arrow on the dist. pulley to the timing mark on the flywheel.

Removing the top cover from 1958 Thunderbolt Mark 55?

There is no such thing as a 1968 Thunderbolt Mark 55 - there is a Mark 55 built in 1955 a serial Nr. will help define it - do not keep trying to undo that bolt it holds the starter together; the reason the cord won't retract is because the spring or mechanism is broken or stuck. Do the nut back...

    1150 Merc Float problems

The spring is for holding the setting as fuel flow changes, are you setting the secondary lever measure from the cap (not the shoulder) and upside down. The primary to secondary lever measurement is 1/4" right side up - there has to be a spring in the float sticking up 3/32". I don't know which...
