    Water in lower unit

The oil and water have separated after sitting so long, was there any rust in the water? The seals might be bad; the washers under the fill/drain screws might be bad or missing - there is also a seal at the shift shaft or the driveshaft is pitted and lets water in. Remove the water pump base...

    Warning about upper shift shafts!

Anyone who owns a 70's and earlier motor should take a good look at the upper shift shaft, I fixed mine 5 yrs. ago by welding in a piece to "jump" the corroded area and this year it failed leaving me without reverse; so I had a guy weld it but it had twisted and I couldn't get it to line up...

Here's the proper method for setting the needle/float; after you reinstall the carb run the engine at approx 1200 rpm in gear and adjust the low speed needle until the engine runs smoothly.

    Merc 85hp 1973

Only thing different is the coil shape; someone has altered (maybe the switch is for the choke) or replaced the control box: it should be this one, I would replace any bad wires even if it means buying a new harness(es) a fire onboard can be fatal!

Trigger Replacement mid 80's Mercury 50hp

Do you run the boat in salt water? if so I'd replace the trigger and get a can of Mercury's Corrosion Guard spray to treat the wires and fittings and use this guide for further protection of the motor; salt water's a killer.

    Twin 1966 Mercury 500's

Don't run deep cycle cycle batteries they take more power to charge than those alt. put out, normal marine starting batteries (not maintenance free) are fine one for each motor both motors should have alternators. One of those props might be cupped to reduce cavitation. You might want to check...

    Twin 1966 Mercury 500's

Once again someone told you something that is not true! {probably told you the reed valves affect the waterpump too} a motor with a good working waterpump will spray a good stream out of the tell-tale, the hole may have something in it push a same size drill into it and gently twist it, if you...

    79 40hp tach Q

If that's a new tach and not a Quicksilver part one you have to run a separate wire from a yellow wire on the rectifier to the sender post on tach. Set the tach at 6p. Connect the black and white wire to + and - and the light to your running light switch.

1974 Mercury 500 (50 HP) Won't fire, has compression, stumped.

Don't worry about comp it sounds good I think you have an ignition problem. That system uses a magneto style ignition with no points so the battery only turns motor over; have you checked the ignition driver on the port side of motor? It has a cap, rotor and plug wire posts and should be clean...

    1971 merc thunderbolt 500 50hp 2 stroke 4cyl wont start even tho i .....???

Are you saying that the starter motor won't turn the engine over or the motor itself won't start? If the starter isn't turning its bad/corroded cables or solenoid or needs repairing, if it isn't starting it could be no fuel or the switchbox/trigger assem./coil. That uses a magneto driver...
