    All you do is hook it up to the red and yellow wires and bolt it to a grounded panel I did it to my 75 850 and its been working for 8 yrs. That diagram is for a V6 but it works on smaller motors; the alternator tach connects to one of the Yellow wires from the stator and +, - from the battery...

    Make sure you have the throttle cable on the throttle arm and the shift cable on the slide inside the cowling.

    Fuel will drip out out of the carbs when the engine is tilted up and they have fuel in them. Why not buy an alternator tach and use it all the time - comes in handy for prop selection etc. You can replace the rectifier with a rectifier/regulator; or get a regulator from Mercury and hook it up...

    Sounds like the negative wire is not connected to the battery, the gauges have different positive feeds but usually have a common negative. The speedo is usually driven by water pressure not electricity.

    You need the 1966-1974 Mercury Outboards service repair manual - C-90-68647 there are some on ebay now.

    Did you clean the carb? could be the high speed circuit is fouled up or the fuel pump is not pushing enough fuel.

    It looks to me that the motor is just too high, the anti-cav plate should ride slightly below the surface of the water when running. Have someone drive it when you're running it on the water and you look at its height.

    Part interchange

    I think that the only upgrade would be Thunderbolt ignition which would require the Lightning Energizer, switchbox and coil; (ignore the color coding) if you're lucky the splines on the Ignition driver will match. you could also replace the plate rectifier with the diode type.

    Clean the battery terminals and re-connect the wires (the motor doesn't need 12v to run just to start) the direct short could have caused a bad contact situation.

    If it uses the large red coil try to find one on ebay etc. I wouldn't use an auto coil - the voltage to the Merc coil is higher than 12v. and you might destroy the switchbox. Later models used a smaller blue one which is still available if you contact a dealer they could tell you if they are...

    What is the model Nr. of the tach, you could search for the instructions, if it needs a module search for that too. If you want to go modern just buy an alternator driven one that attaches to one of the yellow wires.
