removed coil tested pos and neg and .2 ohm tested tower to pand n and got 0 ohm I am considering an aftermarket automotive coil since I happen to have several ,eg MSD Accel and Blue streak .Ijust do not want to poach the puppy...lol
If it uses the large red coil try to find one on ebay etc. I wouldn't use an auto coil - the voltage to the Merc coil is higher than 12v. and you might destroy the switchbox. Later models used a smaller blue one which is still available if you contact a dealer they could tell you if they are compatible.
