1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

What racer said. There are two seals back to back surrounding the driveshaft that keep the gear oil in and and the water out. In an 82 model they are in a holder that can be removed making it easy to replace them. You could spray them with soapy water while pressured up to see if air is leaking...

That grey sludge in the lower exhaust housing is normal.

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

Check the driveshaft seal below the water pump housing. Many times that's where water gets in. If it's been in saltwater, the driveshaft can get pitted and cause even worse leaks. Anyhow, that seal shrinks up, hardens, and the edges that wear against the drive shaft wear down as it ages and...

Johnson J90TLCNB (1982 Johnson 90 hp with power tilt and trim) Timing Advance Specifications

I see in the OMC manual, the timing at WOT is supposed to be set at 4000 rpms not when the arm is tight against the stop like the 86 model. The 4-6 degrees when the roller aligns with the mark is correct though.

Johnson J90TLCNB (1982 Johnson 90 hp with power tilt and trim) Timing Advance Specifications

I've finally gotten back to this motor and have some observations and would like some thoughts on them. I went and checked the timing at wot, using the Joe Reeves method. It's showing 29 degrees which would be about 5 degrees too far. The set screw has definitely been messed with, so not a total...

35HP Took head off and one extra dirty and one clean

Yea, looking rough. You keep running it like that, and a skirt from one of those pistons is going to go through the side of the block when it gets hung up in the crankshaft after breaking loose from slapping around in there.. i would say water definitely getting in the one cylinder

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

It shouldn't hurt it to run it while diagnosing it as long as it's getting gas and oil to all cylinders for lubrication purposes. I'd pull each plug wire to test and remove the plugs and read them. See if one of them looks wet and oily.

    1971 evinrude 9.5

Saw a guy in the Home Depot parking lot with a trailer load of old motors and parts on it. Spotted an Evinrude 9.5 in the jumbled mass. I waited on him to come out then approached him asked what he was doing with all that stuff. He said he was headed to the scrap yard. I asked him what he wound...

Sounds like it's not running on all cylinders.

    77s model 15hp evinrude

Did you mean to say 70's model instead of 77s? If it has condensers like the 74 and 73 etc, that's probably the problem. It'll fire with bad condensers but won't run well and will die when it heats up while still showing fire at the plugs. The fire will be more orange colored. Bad coils will...

Johnson J90TLCNB (1982 Johnson 90 hp with power tilt and trim) Timing Advance Specifications

I'm planning to do a link and sync. You can tell it's been messed with in the past. At the spot on the stop screw where it's slotted for a screwdriver, one side is broken off as if someone attempted to turn it without loosening the lock nut. It may be correct but I'd like to verify. It has a...

Johnson J90TLCNB (1982 Johnson 90 hp with power tilt and trim) Timing Advance Specifications

If you have a factory manual for this motor, can you see what the advance should be set at when wide open throttle.

So I'll ask the obvious, where did the loose bolts come from?

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

The telltale water on my 90 hp stays cool when at operating temp. The block gets pretty warm though. I wouldn't hesitate to go ahead and start it up. Listen for any unusual metallic sounds when running. I would probably mix 40:1 on the oil just to give it a little extra lubrication since it's...

    Should I purchase a 60HP 1969 Johnson hydro-electric shift outboard motor?

My opinion on the motor is it looks pretty good for it's age. If it was thoroughly cleaned, would look real nice. I don't understand why some of these old motors, the wiring falls apart like that. I've seen some that the wire were like new and others, you touch it and the insulation crumbles...

Be sure to run 24:1 mix in that motor.

1982 Johnson 90 hp carburator question.

This motor has had quite the life. I noticed it has 0.030 oversized pistons, black head on one side, blue head on the other, white block and a gold crankcase cover. One of the heads had marks on it where a ring had broke loose at some point. You could tell it been repaired cause the cylinder...

1982 Johnson 90 hp carburator question.

I just replace head gaskets on both sides. The two on the port side both were exactly the same: 132 top and bottom. On the starboard side they both were around 130. When I first started fooling with it, it had been sitting for years. Going off of memory, I believe starboard compression was...
