Help 1980s 70hp evenrude Idles but bogs down under load

If it's water getting in there, you'll see it on the plug usually. If no water, what racerone and keyboardman said.

    1978 Johnson 70HP head scratcher

When you put the #1 cylinder at top dead center is the pointer pointing at TDC on the flywheel?

    1978 Johnson 70HP head scratcher

I guess that's true since they are not glued on but molded i into the flywheel. Just thinking out loud without thinking. Ha ha. Can't figure out though, how the timing could possibly change by 90 degrees and the coil on #1 not fire, then go back to normal. This whole thing doesn't make sense.

    1978 Johnson 70HP head scratcher

Did you check the flywheel magnets to be sure none were loose and just stuck on there. Also wondering about the trigger coils. Maybe do a resistance test on them while wiggling the wires. This ain't that complicated.

    1978 Johnson 70HP head scratcher

As soon as pressure from the back side hits it, it should close of unless something is in there. Check to be sure foam from the bonnet or maybe a bug carcass is in there. 😁. I've worked on outboards for 35 years and can count on a half a hand the number that had reed issues.

1979 85HP V4 with low compression (80psi) in all cylinders

I would have to try again with a different gage and see if I got the same results if it were me. 80 seems hard to believe. Is it spinning over fast when you check it?

Help 1980s 70hp evenrude Idles but bogs down under load

Could be the fuel pump. Also check the link and sync on the cards and the ignition timing just to rule that out. Also, do all the spark plugs look the same as far as coloration and amount of carbon, etc...

Possibly ran without oil. What to check?

If you use Startron fuel stabilizer or even some others, the fuel can look more normal color or even orangish looking. It kills the die in the oil. Your gas may have oil just the dye has been affected by the fuel treatment if you are using any.

Johnson J90TLCNB (1982 Johnson 90 hp with power tilt and trim) Timing Advance Specifications

I figured out what happened with the timing on this motor and thought I wound post an update in case anyone else runs into this. The pickup timing and the wot timing was off because some genius had removed the spark advance rod retainer from the spark advance lever and put it back in the hole...

‘77 70hp Johnson Repair and Carburetor Rebuild

As far as the fuel lines, I just use whatever fuel line is available at the parts store. If I remember right, that's 3/16" or so. Just take a piece with you when you get some. Stay away from ethanol gas and you will be good.

‘77 70hp Johnson Repair and Carburetor Rebuild

I've worked on lots of these old 3 cylinder motors with compression around 110 lbs and they ran great, so I would run it after cleaning the carbs myself. If it still runs bad start looking elsewhere.

Need advise on skeg repair on 1991 48SPL Evinrude

Welding is the only way I would go with that. If there is a prop shop in your area, they would probably Heli Arc it up and dress it up for you.

early 90's evinrude 20hp carb issue whipping my butt

What do the spark plugs tell you? They should be a golden brown. Are they wet and oily or dry and clean. You should read them after running wide open, not idling in a barrel or on a hose.

    Changed Thermostat and Impeller, but...

A good bit of water will come out of those holes when running fast and up on plane. Goes from a mist to a steady stream. Doesn't shoot out, just flows or blubbers out. I've had a couple of those motors.

    9.9/15 Front-to-back Armature Plate Movement

I have this exact same motor and it has the same play you mention in the armature plate. However, it hasn't affected it's running in the least. I can crank it once it's warmed up by just spinning the flywheel with my hands, no joke. Been an awesome motor. I set the points with my DVM. Be sure...

Johnson J90TLCNB (1982 Johnson 90 hp with power tilt and trim) Timing Advance Specifications

The only thing is, when the roller is aligned with the mark on the cam and it's set at 4 to 6 degrees, I don't have much room to adjust the idle. It's idling at about 530 rpms and if I try to increase it, the roller will touch the cam and open the carb butterfly valves sightly.

Johnson J90TLCNB (1982 Johnson 90 hp with power tilt and trim) Timing Advance Specifications

Yes, I did and it was off slightly. I set everything per the manual. It was at about 16 degrees when the roller was aligned. Also when the arm was against the stop using the Joe Reeves method showed 29 degrees, so I retarded it 5 degrees. Sure seemed out of whack but I will say, it runs perfect...
