Hey guys so I just purchased a evinrude 9.5 1971. When the guy I purchased it from demoed it for me I noticed that it started fine cold start on first pull. Compression test was good, spark plug wires look brand new and plugs. Engine looks amazing overall like it has very low hours. It started to misfire a little bit then start running fine . Owner said the gas was a year old and it definitely looked and smelled old. Could this be the reason for this misfire ? Should I do a carb rebuild or just try to run some sea foam first to see if that clears anything up.

doing a carb job is not complicated see good utubes ...it is good insurance dont forget an impeller and new gear oil (check for water intrusion)
(596) 9.5 Hp Johnson Evinrude Outboard Carburetor Rebuild - 1of2 - YouTube
when you reinstall the carb carfull with the cam follower/carb set up see picture

you can do timing after checking/cleaning points

old condensers may be bad and cause ignition issues

Some love those light weight ( 60 lbs ) motors and other loathe them.-----Start with doing a spark output test.-----See if both leads have 1/4" spark or more on a testing device.----These motors are famous for cracked ignition coils.----There are very few ( if any ) of these motors still running nice with original coils.----First thing I do on any of those motors , 1-1/2 to 40 HP is inspect ignition coils.----Usually find new coils.-----If they are cracked it might be a bonus as the motor has not been used a lot.

Sounds good will pull fly wheel and come back with results as well as begin a carb clean and rebuild

I'd run the seafoam and then escalate to the carb cleaning if needed.

Fifty year old motors need a complete evaluation.-----That wonderful / simple / easy to repair magneto needs attention.------This motor needs a new impeller and gearcase inspection as well.----Pull the driveshaft out and have a look at the bearing area above the pinion.----A known weakness is the bushing above the pinion.

I envy a one pull cold start 9.5 :) my beauty 9622a Evinrude is a bear to start and I have pretty well all I can do and I mean all ! After the bear wakes up with a shot of carb cleaner it will run smoothly all day long trolling.

Now that I built me a capacitor test box I will go over the ignition (next Spring) on several oldies incl my 9622a

In my opinion poor starting is usually weak spark.----That universal magneto was first installed in 1950.-----Still installed in the late 1980's.-----Used on 1.5 to 40 HP motors.-----It was engineered to be able to produce 28,000 volts in good condition.-----If it does not jump a gap of 1/4" or more on a test device it needs attention !!---I have tested many condensers.----Using a MERC-O-TRONIC ---magneto analyzer.----They test ok cold.----Heat soak them to say 120 F and they fail.

thanks for info on condensers i'll include a warm up on the next one's I test in the future..
just out of curiosity do you know what voltage level was used on the Merc -O-Tronic tester . The AOMCI w.mohat tester i built checks out at 270 DC

oddly my problem is at start up so my condensers haven't warmed up yet to fail. VOM tested they all showed no shorts and a good kick on the needle and they do work fine all day long

The ---MERC-O-TRONIC ---used a 7.5 volt dry cell battery and 120 volt AC.----There are other ways to get 7.5 volts today.-----This tester is NOT a Mercury outboard tool.-----It simply is a magneto analyzer.----It is very easy to maintain and set up this wonderful magneto to jump a gap of up to 5/16"

dont want to hold up this thread...but on this subject of condensers 7.5V or 120AC (rectified I presume) would generate a test voltage much lower than 270DC in W.Mohat's test box. His test box would seem more sophisticated to test a shorted or "leaky" condensers.

The MERC-O-TRONIC is just an excellent unit !!-----Will do all the testing on that magneto that could be thought of.----Have 2 of them.

Saw a guy in the Home Depot parking lot with a trailer load of old motors and parts on it. Spotted an Evinrude 9.5 in the jumbled mass. I waited on him to come out then approached him asked what he was doing with all that stuff. He said he was headed to the scrap yard. I asked him what he wound take for the 9.5 and he said if I wound help him put the sheet of plywood he had in the truck, I could have it. Well, I got it and had it running in a couple of hours. It had a miss so I pulled the flywheel again after I had clean and set the points. I pulled the coils out and found they were cracked on the bottom and arcing to the magneto plate. I replaced them and reset the points using my ohm meter and now once it's warmed up, I can crank it by spinning the flywheel over with my hands. Very low hour motor. Crazy how some people are. Said he was cleaning up at his dad's house that had passed away. I could kick myself for not asking about the 20 hp mercury he had on there as well.

I have seen many of those coils burned through to the magneto plate.---I could get blisters on my fingers or tongue explaining how simple these magnetos are.

I have not ever repaired a 9.5 yet only 6hp and below. I usally set my points by Aligning the crankshaft where it says “top” to the end of the point then make my adjustments, set points, run engine, check points again. Would this be the same process when setting points on the 9.5 I’m assuming it’s not different but I want to be sure. Also when removing the low speed mixture does it just unscrew and then screw back in? Probably should get a repair manual that would 100% help out. Lower unit seems fine for what I know the guy showed me the receipts and service paper for when he had the impeller replaced which was a year ago just about and it’s pumping water just fine. Also lower unit oil was changed and shifting is crips and smooth so these are all good signs for now.

The universal magneto is the same on pre 1977 model 6 HP and the 9.5 HP models.

high speed jet is fixed behind the lower bolt (keep it clean !!

the LS needle unscrews.. carefull not to loose parts

for points the highest point of the cam can be used and set points at .020 or sense when the pistons reach TDC with a screwdriver in the sparkplug holes.

BUt.... you can be dead accurate with a VOM see utube in above post

see Leroy's on 9.5's and general magneto work
Johnson (leeroysramblings.com)
Johnson (leeroysramblings.com)

just be aware these motors can suffocate on their own exhaust if the lower rubber seal is no longer doing it's job otherwise... fine motors the older version (pre 66 or so) have no shock absorber brackets on the inner sides . Those motors shake a lot and self push the choke button out and die from suicide. :)

the tension adjutment is a bear if it gets loose .. the tiller won't hold it's set course on it's own which will keep one of your two hands occupied all day.
