That hole is not your issue. It's missing on mine as well and as much as I've been working on it over the last year or so I don't ever remember anything being in there. Plus you can see it's painted.
Ok. Just wanted to bring it up. Parts diagrams seem to be pretty accurate and it seemed the placement was spot on, as there is no nipple near that location on my motor.
Thanks for coming in. You have an 84 90hp v4 as well??

Is there a wee hose that comes from the back of the air box?-----If yes , does that hose go to a nipple ?

There is not one on the side I am questioning. Only airbox drain nipple and hose, that goes to intake. 20210109_171430.jpg

Tested my recirc valves, and all 4 failed. I know this isn't going to impact my ability to start the engine, only improve idle, so ordered four new.

Also, was taking apart(trying) the primer and found this. No idea what the what stuff is that solidified to the plunger and spring but this needs replaced I have to assume. Possibly could be one of the reasons I struggled to get it starting?

what made you think all 4 recirc valves failed? usually its the lines that are clogged, not the valves. you can clean the valves out if they are dirty. I believe the valves by the bypass cover only allow fuel/oil out but not in, and on the intake they are free both ways. i assumed they shouldn't flow both ways on the intake, as the manual doesn't go into it, but i think they do flow both ways as the reeds stop any fuel flowing back the wrong direction, as do the valves in the bypass cover/s. if fuel can't get past the primer, well, it won't prime yes, but did you squirt fuel into the carbs to bypass this system to confirm as suggested earlier?

Syringe test. All failed open allowing alcohol in the inlet. I also have brand new fuel lines installed. I have a single valve next to bypass cover. The other 4 valves are on the intake and only one way. They all feed into a tee.

I was going to spray fuel into the throat but it was recommended to visit the carbs again. Soon as I get my new parts and reassemble , that will be my next step.

The gunk looks like petroleum jelly to me.

Its rock hard. have to scrape it. I can't even get the plunger or spring off. I ordered a used primer solid unit off ebay.

i hear you on the syringe test... but as i was saying i think the intake manifold recirc valves go both ways. i had just done a 90hp and 110hp and all 8 of them flowed both ways, but the one by the bypass cover port side went only one way.

??----Them 4 valves are called ---check valves ----in the parts book.-----I always thought a check valve flowed one way only.

Unless there is a correction in the manual, it states pretty clear they are one way. boobie explains it well here recirc explained. However, you may be right on your particular model and greatly appreciate your help with this.

Great news, in that the motor started up. Replaced the faulty primer solenoid and all 4 check valves.
The first time it started and was revved up really high, then immediately died. Improved more and more as I primed it with fast idle up. One it settled down, and seemed to be idling OK, I noticed it making an odd noise when idling. see attached vid.
Any idea what the noise could be????
Also the starboard side temp on the cylinder head cover (a couple minutes after I turned engine off) was 105F but the port side was only 60 degrees. Outside temp is 25 degrees.
I REALLY hope I am not taking the power head off again.
Thanks for any help!

In your video, I heard what sounded like a few misfires, but didn't hear anything else. Were the sounds you mentioned the 'ticks' that were interspersed in the normal exhaust noise?

Yes that repetitive tick is what I am referring to. Are those ticks normal? Safe to keep running the motor??

Ok. So that tick tick sound is not firing on all cylinders??? If so, its safe to run again for diagnosis purposes. I will start it and pull each spark plug to see if I can determine which cylinder isn't firing .

It shouldn't hurt it to run it while diagnosing it as long as it's getting gas and oil to all cylinders for lubrication purposes. I'd pull each plug wire to test and remove the plugs and read them. See if one of them looks wet and oily.

I did pull all plugs after I ran it and none of them looked wet and oily, like it wasn't firing. Yet it is so odd there is such a temp difference between 1 and 3 starboard , 2 and 4 port

how long did you run it before reading those temps? I can imagine in 25 degree weather it would take a good 10 minutes to warm up fully. the t stats not seated properly with the cork gaskets pinched or stuck open.
that misfiring could be a bad coil grounding out, or the sensor assembly, stator charge coil or the pack too. only way to tell is to break out the DVA adapter/multimeter and start testing!
