    Pontoon 20’ long bunks

I would do whatever is required to get the splice over one of the supports. Depending on the size of the support where it meets the wood, if it's on the small side, nothing to keep you from placing a plate (size to be determined by what you have handy, could even be angle material) between the...

    Throttle issues

Many times when standing near the control, you can move the throttle and get a good visual on the moving carb. linkage to get an idea of where to investigate further. If it's not possible to move the control and watch the carb linkage, maybe have somebody give you a hand? The 90a does have a...

    BF45: removing oil pan?

You're right. The 45 was only made for one year, and during that year they used both designs, depending on serial number. I have to wonder if they saw the issue you had coming and changed? See #5 and #23 here: boats dot...

    Johnson vs merc vs Chrysler?

Unless it was pristine, I would discount the Chrysler as well. From there the newer the better.

    BF45: removing oil pan?

The parts we're talking about here RARELY ever go bad for any reason. For that reason, they sit around getting dusty or are scrapped out frequently. Here's an ebay listing for BOTH parts for instance- https://www.ebay.com/itm/332370070101?hash=item4d62ccca55:g:MGwAAOSwCCVZrsIU

    BF45: removing oil pan?

I think I see what the deal is here. Looks like that pan says it's from an EFI motor (BF50D). You might find SOME interchangeability from that motor to the older design (BF35, 40, 45, and 50A) but I wouldn't count on it! Same story with your new pipe I'll bet. That would certainly explain the...

    Impeller overheating

If you're asking would I reuse it, the answer would be no. While you have that off, did you look to make sure there was nothing between it and the intake screens? I've seen that pump get hot enough to melt the upper plastic piece, to the point where the stainless cup is riding hard on the drive...

    Impeller overheating

While you have it apart, look UNDER the water pump to make sure there are no restrictions on the intake side of the pump - like more impeller pieces.

    BF45: removing oil pan?

Do you have a part number for this "improved" exhaust pipe? Are you pretty sure it's for this BF35-50A series motor? I've never seen an exhaust pipe that exits into any opening at the bottom, and I can't say I've ever seen an "improved" pipe that requires a hole in the pan gasket above it...

    Jet Drive Replacement

Local Honda dealer's quote for a "few thousand dollars" either means they don't want the job, or they have nobody there qualified to do the work.... Screw them! I'd be willing to bet it can be done. The question here being what it would take. What exactly will you need, other than a lower unit...

    BF50A Stiff Shift

The OEM honda control, one in decent shape, often go for 200 or so used on ebay - without the cables or wiring harness. That makes #6 in the diagram below a pretty good bargain, no? https://www.boats.net/catalog/honda/outboard/50hp/bf50ay-lrta-vin-bazs-3200001-to-bazs-3209999/remote-control All...

    Problem starting johnson 50hp 1996

We're victims of our experience right? If the primer bulb is squeezed to firm, the fuel system has plenty of pressure to squirt fuel when that valve is opened.

    Problem starting johnson 50hp 1996

I had one of these for a while, and had a terrible time with flooding on cold starts at first. I learned to never choke for more than a 3 count at a time. What worked best for me was squeezing the primer bulb till firm, go to console, push the ign. key in for a 3 count, then attempt to start -...

    BF45: removing oil pan?

You'll need to remove the exhaust pipe and water intake pipes (2 bolts). Behind those, you'll find 2 more bolts holding the pan on. Very difficult to see them. I've done a bunch of these now, but remember the first one I did clearly. Missed these same 2 bolts myself, and thankfully didn't...
