I just bought a 18' Lund Alaskan aluminum boat & trailer with a 2006 Honda 35 Jet (which I believe was a factory install). I'd like to think I can replace the Jet with a traditional gearbox/lower unit. Has anyone here done this and or have any advice? Local Honda Marine shop says that it will be a few thousand dollars and wants to just sell me a new outboard. I can get my hands on 2 used lower units for short money but am concerned about compatibility.

My Jet Drive 2006 Model #: BF40A (BAZS 3600918)
Used lower units are from Honda 50HP 2000 vintage

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Local Honda dealer's quote for a "few thousand dollars" either means they don't want the job, or they have nobody there qualified to do the work.... Screw them!

I'd be willing to bet it can be done. The question here being what it would take. What exactly will you need, other than a lower unit?

I would think the earlier lower units should work fine, but until it's all assembled?

You would almost need a scrap motor to pull parts from.
