    Steam Launch parts acquired

She looks great. You have a great weekend coming up in South Central PA. I’ll be hitting Raystown Lake on Saturday. Should be close to 70 both days. Good luck on your launch.

    Piranha composite modular props

Anyone have any experience with these good, bad, or indifferent? Looks like a pretty neat concept, and easily repairable. Curious for feedback. Mercruiser Alpha 1 outdrive.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

My Chaparral is not full width either. The transom glass is thick enough on its own for properly Encapsulated 3/4” plywood. The outdrive requires the double thick plywood to get close to the 2” to 2-1/4” Thickness required. The 3/4” single layer is fine for mounting tabs, depth finders etc to...

    Crooked or warped transom

Hey there GSX, looking good. Any gaps in bonds to the hull can be filled with 1/4” chop reinforced thickened resin, called hairy peanut butter. Then tabbed with 1708 once all the nuns are smoothed over. To answer the previous question, all bare wood should be wrapped, (encapsulated), in...

'65 Lyn Craft Seabreeze 1500 Sport Runabout

Great progress. Simply using thickened polyester resin has no strength and can crack. Make sure to add some 1/4” chopped strands to it for strength. Epoxy can be thickened without strands as it’s plenty strong on its own.

    Restoration 1984 Scarab I 21.5'

@tpenfield I’m curious too. That would create a “lid” for the pour in foam cavities, and provide a good base for the cap. You can definitely save some money using exterior grade plywood and polyester resin, especially if you’re lucky enough to be able to source it locally. Very nice progress on...

    Pressure Testing Specs

I only pressure tested my drive to ensure there was no major leak at 5 psi. I also turned the drive shaft every so often. I’d say you’re good to go. I always drain the lube during the winterizing process to make sure there is no water infiltration, which is the real test. I also pull the drive...

Free Boat, This thing is a badboy!

Ahhh, I was curious as to why all the drains. Using all that cut foam instead of poured foam doesn’t have the same structural integrity, but you have a really sturdy stringer system. Beastly!

    1963 Boston wailer 13 footer

Won’t go over 9 mph?? Ignore it being water logged, time for an LS conversion.......😂

    73 Sea Ray restoration

I gel coated mine. I thought about bilgecoat paint but was shocked at the price. Gelcoat is pretty impermeable to most bilge fluids and cleans up pretty easy.

1981 Bayliner Victoria 2750 - Restore or Bust

Great to see this post revived. She is a nice boat, and those cabinets are sweet. Looking great.....but she needs to be IN the water.....next year. Lol.

    Bellows Adhesive application

I had a lot of problems with the quick silver bellows adhesive. It’s more like a contact adhesive, similar to weather strip glue. Putting on a thin coat, letting it tack up, then installing the bellow on the horn proved to be very difficult because as soon as the two tacky surfaces meet, they...

1976 Tom Boy Boat, 1976 40 HP Johnson Outboard and who knows what Trailer

Perhaps he was. I had mentioned the stainless steel insert. I assumed he meant a stand-alone stainless pipe. Also, sorry for the thread hijack on chimneys.....let’s get back to your boat. Time to get that transom cap fabbed. You better not miss crappie season for the 20th time in a row......ha ha.

    1988 Starcraft-221 Offshore-Replacing engine mount stringers

You’re not going to want to hear this, but it’s a 1988......you’re going to find rot everywhere, to include the transom. Bad news for sure, but many of us have been there.

    Saved from the landfill

What a cool project. I agree with you on the lines. She’s a real sharp looking boat. Great work on the structural work.

87 Lund pro Angler 16 - transom question - rot or not?

+1 on what @todhunter said. It’s the only way to really know if the transom core is good.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Yeah, I just saw the pic of the washer and drier and figured you don’t want to get fiberglass dust throughout those appliances. My neighbors aren’t that close, so I used compressed air and blew the dust out of mine on breezy days before putting it back in the garage. Like you, I wanted to keep...

    Bellows Adhesive application

Bellows adhesive even on bellows is a real pain in the butt and makes a mess. I’m with everyone else here and only use the clamps on the tubes. Some of the other Rubber connections, especially coolant lines where the barbed ridge has rusted away, I’ll use Permetex Ultra Black as a sealant. It...

    Engine Alignment Almost There

You should be fine, and who knows, the coupler may relax over time. Obviously this is something you’ll want to monitor every year. I pull my drive every year to check alignment, gimbal bearing, bellows, etc.

Fibreglass boat floor replacement - do I need to use fiberglass?

The real strength in bonding wood, (non-pressure treated) to a fiberglass hull is tabbing it to the hull with fiberglass. Simply bedding wood into glue just isn’t going to get it done. That bond will almost certainly fail as the fiberglass hull constantly flexes against the pressure of water...
