I recently acquired a 1976 115 merc, the 6 cylinder. In addition to the distributor and what appears to be an ignition module it has two wires coming from under the flywheel which I guess are from a stator. What’s the function of that stator? Does it just run auxiliary thinks like light etc or does it also charge the battery?

The 2 yellow wires go to a rectifier change AC to DC .----So yes , the stator charges the battery.

The CDI ignition system on that motor is driven by the battery. The switchbox must have power on the red wire at all times. The adjacent white wire is connected to the ign key, and only gets power when the ign switch is in the on or start position.

The stator is designed to charge up the battery so the ign keeps working.

The two stator wires go to a small block mounted to the engine. From there they go to the rectifier. One goes to the same rectifier post as the brown wire that goes to the wiring harness. Is the stator grounded? I’m trying to figure out how to test if it has output.

Battery should show about 12.4 volts.-----At fast idle it should show 13.5 volts or more.-----If that is not the case test stator yellow wires.----If stator is good , replace rectifier.

Yellow stator wires will have an AC voltage on them. If you get AC voltage at the battery, the rectifier is bad, and the stator is good.

The brown wire runs from one of the stator wires to the tachometer, to act as a tach signal.
