Bought my first boat to cut, gut and rebuild from bow to stern, including engine. Killed my back and suffered the wrath of the fiberglass demons

All the glass is there - that's a plus. Other than the bottom cushions, the upholstery looks OK - you could probably clean and manage for a little while, and just recover the bottom cushions or just throw towels over it at first....but that's a discussion for WAAAAAY down the road. The ski...

    Fixing Dings and Dents

This will be a relatively simple gelcoat repair. Grind them out, fill them with gelcoat (might need to thicken it), then sand and buff to the desired finish. I would get some white tinted gelcoat and if you want, you can try tinting it to match. I had to repair gouges like this on the keel of...

    New project.

Once you try the cake bags, you'll never go back to zip locks. You have way more control since there is a much smaller angle at the tip, compared to the 90 degree angle at the corner of a zip lock bag. They're also a more "crinkly" material that doesn't stretch, like zip lock bags.

    New project.

To reduce materials you have to buy, just make some peanut butter (poly resin mixed with cabosil to thicken it) to fill voids with. I also used it to glue the floor to the stringers. Go buy some icing bags from the baking section at Walmart. Mix up a batch of PB, dump into an icing bag, then...

    Seeking advice on fiberglass repair

If you're going to put a keel shield on there, I'd just grind out the bad, mix up some polyester resin with some cabosil to make it thick, then fill the gouge. Sand it to shape, tape off the area, then roll on 2 coats of white gelcoat. Then install your keel shield. Here is where I did mine.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Good info to have! I don't even have any 5356 filler, so it's safe to say I 100% rolled the dice! Hope it holds...if not, grind, rinse, and repeat.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I winterized the boat last weekend. We wanted to do a fall leaf tour of the gorge, but my truck's transmission died 2 weeks ago, so no more boat hauling till that's fixed. Since the drive is off, I went ahead and started fixing the places where the whale tail broke off. This is what I started...

    1990 Bayliner 2651 resto

I used a drill press to drill a guide hole in a piece of 3/4" plywood, then clamped that to the transom and used that to help drill straight. It wasn't perfect, I still had to waller out a couple holes just a little. For the steering relief, I just used a 1" drum sander on a 90-degree angle...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I'm not sure if mine was a bad install from the PO, if I hit something small with mine, or if it's just the risk you take running a whale tail, but one side of mine broke off this summer and took a chunk of the cavitation plate with it. I'm going to weld in new aluminum plate where it chunked out.
