1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

I think cheaper boats used chopper guns, and nicer ones were marketed as "hand laid". Unfortunately on mine (1987), some of the hand laid glass was sloppily done, and none of the stringers had glass all the way up the sides.

1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

Typically if you leave the outer skin on the boat, proper transom thickness is achieved with 2 layers of 3/4" plywood and about 2-3 layers of 1708 fiberglass...maybe a couple more depending on how your specific rebuild goes.

    Bayliner Capri 2150 resurrection.

If you plan on keeping the QJ, I highly recommend getting Cliff Ruggles' book and Doug Roe's book. And you are right, there is only one bowl, but there are secondary wells that are fed from the bowl through two tiny holes, which can get clogged.

    1990 Bayliner 2651 resto

I splashed at the end of 2022, and we are reaping the benefits of a fully restored boat now! It was a LOT of work, but the results have been worth it.

    1990 Bayliner 2651 resto

Being done with grinding is a huge milestone. Yes, 2 layers of 1700 should be fine for the mounts. Perpendicular with 1700 shouldn't matter, as it's a 45 degree bias. The stitching runs the direction of the roll and will impact how it lays around bends, but once cured in resin, it carries almost...

    Bayliner engine swap??

Meh, my thru-hull exhaust doesn't bother me or any of my passengers at all, and I've never gotten any dirty looks. I am running the OEM mufflers that go between the elbow and transom, though.

    Transom and floor replacement

If you're not going to remove the cap, cut the boxed in area out and dig out all the foam. When you rebuild the boxed in area, cut a hole about 3" in diameter near thr top edge and fill with 2-part pourable expanding foam though the hole. Reinstall the plug you hole sawed out with PB or some...

    99 Monterey 276 Transom Replacement

Hollow definitely = rotten. But definitely rotten does not always = hollow. Most of the time tests like "sounding" or looking for flex while standing on the drive are crude and don't tell the full story. Rot is a cancer, and these tests only detect the very end-stage of the disease. If the glass...

    99 Monterey 276 Transom Replacement

A "sounding test" won't tell you if it's rotten or not. Only if it's hollow or not.

    Small hull repair

I would just buy from US Composites. Less chance of it having set on a shelf for over a year somewhere.

    Small hull repair

You'll need to spend about $100-$200 in materials. Get some natural gelcoat, cabosil, and some gelcoat tints. Mixing the natural gelcoat and tint to match your boat will be the hardest part. Tint a smallish batch of uncatalyzed gelcoat. Apply some clear packing tape next to the repair area and...

Gipsy - 1996 Sea Ray 210 Bowrider restomod

I bought 50 yd of 50" 1708 and 50 yd of 1.5 oz CSM, then sold the remainder when I was done with my restoration. I estimate I used about 35 yd of 1708 between learning / wasting material and what ended up on the boat. My boat is 19ft.

Gipsy - 1996 Sea Ray 210 Bowrider restomod

Just buy a full width roll (38" or 50"). Then you can cut strips to the desired width. I used a 50" roll. For tabbing, I would cut my strips to the desired width off the roll, then cut them in half so they were 25" long. This size was easy to handle by myself, and if you're doing 2 layers, you...

    1990 Baja 196 ESS

The day you get th last rotten wood out of the boat is a relief. The day you start adding new wood and glass to the boat is another huge milestone. That ski locker lid will look amazing after you sand and refinish it. I put one in my boat that I bought on eBay, and it looked way worse. Teak...

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

Correct. With Marine Grade plywood, you're paying for A grade veneers on both outer faces. Radiata Pine is specially grown to have less defects when making plys. The Arauco brand of Radiata ACX uses a phenolic (waterproof) resin for bonding the plys, and you get one A grade outer ply on the...

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

There's no escape from it - you're either going to pay with money (buying a newer boat) or with time/labor by repairing the one you have. How do you know the stringers and transom are good? It's usually a bad assumption to make when the floor is rotten. My guess is you'll pull up the floor...

1988 Bayliner Capri with a 2.3L OMC Ford cobra

Prop size will be WOT RPM dependent. What are you currently at with your 15p? With your 17p? I would wet sand and buff instead of paint or wrap. If you've got chalky gelcoat, start wet sanding with ~800 and go lower if needed. I had to go way down (300, I think?) then work my way back up to...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I mean it's possible. We were watching pretty close for wood, but I know you're never gonna see all of it. Whatever it was, I'm thankful that was the only damage.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Boat is still running great, but today one half of my whale tail pulled off and took some of the cavitation plate with it. I'm just going to ditch the other half of the whale tail and enjoy the boat the rest of the season, then this winter when I pull the drive I'll weld in some aluminum...

    Making engine beds

A wet-on-wet application will almost always be stronger. It shouldn't matter tabbing or covering first if you prepped the mounts well (fully covered in resin, no dry spots), but I would probably cover first then tab.
