    1975 Johnson Stinger

i would certainly put a borescope down the cylinders to make sure they didnt rust. if they are clean, squirt a whole bunch of tcw3 oil down them and turn it over a bunch. that will ensure it stays in perfect shape. head gasket, impeller and any other rubber that is dry-rotted needs to get replaced.

    Timing question 70 hp

yes its the same. some motors had the 2 mark one doesnt matter. i will say it does look like the max timing advance is far too low. it usually contacts fully around 1/2 of the butterflys opening. Mark flyhweel at the 13 degree mark with nail polish or a visible color.pull and ground the...

    70 hp rectifier wiring

just an FYI you can get the CDI REGULATED rectifier replacement. almost the same size, but now it regulates itself instead of the battery, so you can also use cheap maintenance free types if you want. makes a much smoother current ramp than the stock ones, and helps keep your battery in good...

What type of hydraulic fluid to use in '98 50hp Johnson? Replace relays too while I'm at it?

you say "down eventually works"... thats usually a stiff bushing/binding issue if you need to give it a little push. does it make any creaking/groaning noises?

1995 Johnson 130 No Power Under Load

lint and dust will do absolutely no harm whatsoever. its not like rebuilding a hydraulic assembly! obviously im talking about lint/dust barely visible from say a shop towel.

    ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TOOLS

ive pushed the male ones out with a small nail years ago. amazon has a really cheap inserter/instraction tool assortment on a keychain. a bunch of those will work, too. $8 or something funny like that.

    Carburetor tuning on muffs

if you run the low speed needle all the way in and no change, i suspect that middle cylinder is shot. its not fuel, its not spark so therefore the skirt on piston is most likely toast. #2 cyl on these is commonly the 1st to go.

    Swelling Powerpack

that isnt the issue here. anything under 2v and you are fine. turn key off and on rapidly and look at your meter is the proper way to test for voltage. i had a brand new CDI pack for my GT100 do the same thing a couple months ago. I noticed a large "lump" or bubble appear on the pack. still ran...

    1999 Johnson 3 cy 35 hp overheating?

remove the powerhead and inspect adapter where water tube and grommet enter housing. you will find it blocked or swollen. sometimes they get swollen but not clogged, like a straw with tool small of an opening to get proper water volume. sometimes you can just snip off the swollen part and get it...

    Carburetor tuning on muffs

when you sprayed fuel mix into #2 it all sounded normal to me aka dying when it took in fuel after a brief pause. If it was starving for fuel, youd get a sudden and hard "kick" into higher rpm. you can swap the top #1 carb for #2 just as a test to see if it follows that cyl. obviously the cam...

    Carburetor tuning on muffs

you had asked how you tell if the middle carb or any carb is taking fuel... either put your hand over the carb to choke it, or squirt some premix with a syringe into it. no change=no fire. simple.

    1964 Johnson JW-19M Restoration project

if you can find a set of the original ATOM red chips, or Sierra Magnatunes, youll see what I mean. I think they double-fired on top, but havent hooked up my analyizer to see if thats true. The other nice thing is you can leave the points/condenser setup on the mag plate, and just run the points...

    1964 Johnson JW-19M Restoration project

just another reason to ditch the points and put in ignition modules. youll be amazed at how easily they start, and how smooth they idle. its too bad they dont make the red australian ATOM computer chips anymore, but if you use aftermarket coils and nova2 modules they seem to hold up. had a few...

    Carburetor tuning on muffs

that tool does look like a vacuum synch tool only used on 4 strokes. i have one at the shop for the odd 4 stroke that comes in, but 95% of the time its not needed as the factory sets it and they dont really ever get out of adjustment.

    CROSSFLOW PERFORMANCE ?'s

right but what I mean is the resistance can be out of spec, but cranking voltage just fine. now if the cranking voltage is out of spec, its obviously bad. just my experience.
