Re: What do you pull your boat with?

Just added a new tow rig to the "fleet." Some where back in the catacombs of this thread, I listed our E150 Van that I do most of our towing with (still do). But just added something fun to drive: 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.7 Hemi.

... I'm gonna' need a bigger boat!

2007 Toyota Tundra 5.7L DC Shortbox 4x4

Does MUCH better than my previous vehicle....'04 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Ext Cab 5.3L Z71 4x4. What a piece of crap that '04 was and I bought that sucker new. Blown resistor pack for fan, cut through the wiring in the drivers side door w/emergency brake, blinker relay went, transfer case solenoid replaced, front axle seal/rear pinion seal/rear axle seals all replaced, Valve seals went, radio stopped playing CD's, Shifter lever replaced due to broken wiring (couldn't engage Tow/Haul), Steering shaft replaced 2x, and the list goes on. And all that was during its lifespan of 130K miles. Most of that was under warranty. Got to be a game of what needed to be replaced next. Never a GM again.

Up until last week I was towing my 1993 Baja islander 180 with a 2000 zr2 s10 ext cab 5 speed, you drf knew it was there esp on any hills, Just bought a 2005 Chevy silverado z71 ext cab 5.3 with 3.42 gears and even with the high gearing it pulls the boat like a champ. Absolutely love it

Just bought our 1st boat this year, and upgraded from a 1994 Ford Ranger V6 to a 2000 Dodge Durango V8. The 94 could tow it across town no problem, but it struggled with anything more than that.

The Durango, is it the 5.7l Hemi? We are boat shopping and will be towing with a 98 Durango Adventurer with the Hemi.

It's a 5.9 with a K&N filter, not sure about the hemi.

Grainy pic... but here's the engine:

The only problem right now is the A/C needs recharged. Runs like a top otherwise!

A 98 Durango would have the 5.2 (318) or the 5.9 (360). The 5.7 Hemi didn't come in Durango's until 2004 I think.

You're right, my van is the 98, the Durango is an 06.

We are boat shopping, but are not sure how much boat we can tow with the Durango. The numbers I have seen say that towing capacity is around 2600, I was hoping to get something in the 21-24' range. :(

Re: What do you pull your boat with?

Here is my tow rig...sold my play toy Mustang and bought this and my boat with the proceeds.

It's a 2002 Ford F150 Harley Edition...they come supercharged from the factory. But coming from a 9 second Mustang, it wasn't fast enough. So first thing I did was upgrade the supercharger to a Whipple...she puts down 412rwhp and 440ft/lbs at the wheels now. And makes for some fun driving. She doesn't mind towing the boat either :)

I pull my 20' Mirrocraft openbow with my extended cab 1989 F-250 that has a 5.8L engine  She only has 76k miles on her and looks good ;) It was set up to pull BIG machinery by the previous owner, so I barely notice the 20' monster behind me, except when going up hill, then I notice the gas gauge going down hill.

I pull a 16' fiberglass jet boat with a beater 96 isuzu V6. (100lb tounge weight)

I live on the same street as boat ramp so I have seen it all, if you think it can and it's a straight flat shot just go for it, if it's far and curvy / bumpy/ hills embrace the rental or enlistment of freinds neighbors and coworkers or Uhual.

Re: What do you pull your boat with?

Just bought a 2011 Silverado Allstar Edition 5.3l with 9,700mi. Should serve me well although I see there's a guy above who said he would never go back to GM and has switched to Toyota. My old rig was the same truck, sure it had problems, and it still lives today but it was a solid truck.

Re: What do you pull your boat with?

I just switched to a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 with a 5.3 liter. My previous truck was a 2000 Sierra 1500 ext cab 4x4 it has 175,000 miles on the clock. Never had an issue with the old truck so I figured I would stay with what works.
