I'm pretty sure he's talking about the turbo Buick's from late 1970's-80's with the 3.8 Turbo. They were one of the fastest cars around then :).

Im thinking it wouldnt tow a bow well tho....

A lot of talk about pulling
most 1/2 ton trucks will pull 10,000 lbs but
Will it stop it
I went for a F-250 super duty just for that reason
I want to know that I can stop what is behind me if the brakes fail on the trailer
or I lose a wheel
or just someone pulls in front of me
the F-250 gets 19mpg on hwy at 2000 RPMs
pulling my boat (about 9000lbs) I get 14mpg

Now getting back to the OP I would not only worry about the truck I get to pull my boat but also to stop my boat

Harry

Not sure where you guys are getting $40k? You can spend $40k on a v8 version as well. It's a $1k option.
For approximately $1k more you get more HP and Torque all with the same gas mileage as a V8 - no brainier to me. I to love mine and have had no problems towing approximately 7k lbs around

That's what I was wondering...The T type and the Grand National were legends even during production. We all had that style of car back then...Cutlass, Grand Prix, Regal, Monte Carlo. If you had T Tops, you were tight. Only one of us had the Grand National with T's.

Re: Towing with an EcoBoost

I'd love to hear some real life example pulling heavily constructed boats. My minivan pulls a 17 footer with ease as it should. I see locally they just started running a commercial comparing the Silverado to the Fords pulling a large boat up hill. No stats given other than the actor driving saying the Silverado was struggling at that particular second. ...
Here's a real life comparison....
I bought a wake boat 18 months ago. An Axis A-22, trailer and boat weight over 5000lbs. Bought a 2011 Ecoboost F-150. The engine had no issues pulling the boat through rolling hills; 5 to 6% grades. The rear springs sagged when the trailer was attached. I added airlift air bags to fix that issue. Wife leaves, we get divorced, she took the truck. I buy a 2012 Chevy 1500 with the the v-8. Chevy pulls the same boat with ease. The Chevy is not sagging like the F150 did, so I don't need the air bags. The Chevy gets better fuel economy in almost all driving situations. The Ecoboost was 1 mpg better driving at 65 mph with an empty truck. Other than that, the Chevy gets better economy. Both are nice trucks, the Chevy seats feel more comfortable to me. Real life fuel economy, I am not heavy footed, I am usually the last guy off the line at a stop light and I rarely speed.

Before someone thinks that I am a biased Chevy owner, let me say that as a contractor that drives a 1 ton service truck 30,000 miles a year, I prefer the F350 (had 3) to the Chevy 3500 (have 1); going back to the F350 when I trade later this year. Had a 2000 Dodge Ram, won't ever buy another Dodge truck.

The 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will be offered with a 3.0-liter V-6 produced by VM Motori?a manufacturer who Chrysler is quick to add has been producing engines for the automotive group since 1992. No doubt this is being said in anticipation of critisism from diesel enthusiasts who are likely to complain about a non-Cummins, Italian-made engine being fitted to a Dodge Ram

That's what I was looking for. Was the Chevy V8 the 5.3 or the 4.8? Does it have 3.73's or 3.42's? I hate saggy rear ends...all of my tow vehicles have had the air springs and I really like them. Bummer Dodges have such a bad rep. I never hear anything good about them except for their v8. I think they look the nicest from the outside.

Do a test drive. I guess I'm not familiar with the saggy rear end. I have the FX4 with the tow package and the larger rear end. Again, my boat and trailer is around 7k pounds and no bounce etc. plus the tow package has anti sway, tranny cooler and built in brake controller.
Anyway, check them all out. Maybe you'll prefer a Toyota?

5.3 with 3.73 locking rear axle
I was surprised when the F150 sagged.
I was more surprised when the Chevy did not.

Both were 2 wheel drive with the tow package.

Funny thing is that most 3/4 ton brakes aren't much bigger than 1/2 ton brakes. And if you compare a modern half ton to a 20 year old 1 ton, the 1/2 ton is superior in every way. So it kind of depends what you are looking at. I've got a 53 1 ton that isn't as beefy as a ford ranger ;)

I often wonder why they rate these "1/2 ton trucks" to carry a payload over 1500lbs and tow 10k. I gotta tell you, with the towing end of things I would never tow a 10k lbs trailer with a 1500 series. If I had to do it once, ok but regularly? No way. My 2500 is more than twice the truck the 1500 is. Way beefier frame, huge brakes...My 2500 weighs 7k. You gotta stop too. Im surprised someone hasn't sued the automakers for saying these trucks can do it. And if they are built heavy enough to actually do it, then why are they called 1/2 ton, 1500 or F150?

My 2009 1/2 ton weighs 6K ;) Also has a frame that is comparable to your 97 3/4 ton. Now the 2010 3/4 ton has an even beefier frame. FWIW I had 2100lbs of bamboo flooring in the bed of my truck last week and it wasn't on the bump stops. They just keep building them bigger and stronger every generation.

They call them 1/2 ton because there has to be a bottom. Same reason they call a 1 ton a 1 ton, when it is more like a 2 ton.

Has to be a bottom? Back in the day, 1/2 ton trucks could only carry a payload of 1000lbs. That was what my 86 chevy was rated to carry.
If your 09 has a frame comparable to my 2500, and I would like to see that, then you've pretty much proven my point.

Re: Towing with an EcoBoost

I would catagorize the new "1/2 ton" truck like the newer diesels. My 97 12 valve cummins would pull anything behind it. Im pretty sure either the tranny, rearend or driveshaft would twist out before the engine would ever stop trying to pull. Yet now they make 6.7L cummins with over 800 ft-lbs of torque.

Re: Towing with an EcoBoost

Another thought I have with towing is this; the Eco-boost sounds like a cool rig no doubt. Good power. But lets take my cummins for example. the 97 12 valve only has 180 horsepower and 420 ft-lbs of torque at 1600 rpms. That torque alone allows the truck to pull anything and I have no problems getting up to any speed. The last thought in my mind is thinking the truck is a dog. Its the fact that the drivetrain is build tough enough to handle the stress. The thing could easily pull a 10,000 lb trailer every single day, all day long. Could a gasser do the same thing? I dont think so.
My point is, could the V6 handle the same amount of stress as a V8? Not everything is about maximum power, I think durability is king.

Well, the ecoboost has 90% of peak torque at 1700 rpm.
365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque at peak

If you base everything purely on power, then I should be towing with a corvette. That engine would not outpull a diesel.

I gave up on the ecoboost. I ended up getting a 2013 Silverado 2500HD with Duramax 6.6 4X4
