Well now Ford and GM are teaming up to engineer a ten speed tranny. This should be something. Hope it's an automatic.

Only for cars. As it is, GM can't put a higher number of gears in the transmissions going in the 2500 trucks. Can't handle the torque. They are going to be putting 8 speeds in the 1500s soon though.

Should be able to get good buys on 2013 Chevy trucks this year now that the new redesigned 2014s are hitting the dealers this year.

Same length of loan?

Yes both were 72 ford was doing the $12,000 off with ford finance at 5.99% giving me 30k for my trade
GM did $37,500 for my trade with 8K off the new truck and 0% for 72

I would say the trucks are a better design than they used to be. Comparing my old 86 chevy to a new one speaks for itself. They are over rated though.
Well yeah, they're better designed but I thought we were talking about towing and obviously they're still very comparable there.

Congrats on the new diesel agallant80. The EB is very powerful, but it's no replacement for a diesel.

I am really impressed with the EcoBoost. The points you make about truck specs and ergonomics is absolutely on the money! I get ticked every time I get my clothes dirty from reaching over the box. Oh...............I forgot about the goofy fold out grab bar on the tailgate.

Not going to tow 18000lbs with a truck that weighs 7000lbs. There is a good comment about the towing ratings from someone. he said the ratings are more of a suggestion. If you actually tried to tow 24500 with the F450(for example), the rear end would be overloaded and if you ever got into an accident, insurance would deny your claim. The ratings of these trucks these days are exhaggerated.

how much does a semi weigh vs its load?

Also, worked in insurance many, many years. not once did I see a claim denied because of someone overloading past the tow ratings. Outside of the commercial hauler realm, you generally will NEVER face any problems from overloading past tow capacities (within reason), both from the DOT as well as from your insurance.

Tractors are around 17,000 lbs, empty trailer is around 17,000, and payload maybe at 46,000 lbs. So the total behind the tractor is 63,000 lbs, vs. 17,000 for the tractor for an 80,000 lb max typical legal load. Around 79% total "towed" weight.

Sleepers and day cabs move this around some, but this is a reasonable combo for discussion.

Also, can't imagine what the cost would be to replace one of those turbos when, not if, the go.

I have a buddy who works at a large Ford dealership and they have yet to replace a single turbo on any ecoboost. Ford purchases the turbos from Borg Warner and they are the best available. They should last 150-200 thousand miles. I have seen diesels with 300,000+ miles and still using the original turbo.

At 50k miles - Never had a problem with mine. Never heard of an inter cooler issue.

The intercooler issue has been fixed. lookout TSB # is 12-2-10. The problem was the inter cooler was too getting condensation buildup. The fix is a reflash and a partial shield over the intercooler.

I think comparing pickup trucks towing trailers, and semi's towing their trailers, is not an accurate comparison. Semi's are 100% built for towing while even my diesel pickup is not.

I have heard some very good things about the eco boost but what I can't wrap my head around is if your going to pay that much money for a gas truck why not just bump up to a diesel? The old black sheep rummins will pull just about anything you can legally put on the road and I get darn near 20 mpg when pulling my 19 footer.

cheapest ecoboost equipped f150 is $26000 MSRP.
Cheapest chevy with a diesel is $36000.
Cheapest Ford diesel is $38000.

So at a bare minimum that 'bump' up to a diesel is at least $10,000. (feel free to price them out on the respective web sites, I just did... It isn't really apples to apples because is 1/2 ton vs 3/4, but that isn't the point, its gas vs diesel, and you have to go to 3/4 to get diesel.) Again, this is msrp, not counting dealer specials, rebates, government subsidies, etc...)

Re: Towing with an EcoBoost

I calculated 24 mph towing my dual axle utility trailer about 120 miles. Granted, it was lightly loaded but I would say trailer plus cargo around 2500#. Not much but still, good mileage. This saturday I am hauling the boat the same distance. I will see how the mileage does then.

I agree, but the load question was asked.

Wow I guess I didn't realize you could get an Ecoboost for that cheap. For some reason I thought the ecoboost was an upper end motor you could only get with higher trim packages. I still wouldn't pay 26000 for a single cab truck with nasty rims and crank windows but that is all personal preference. I honestly would never but a new vehicle off a lot anyway.

I had thought the same also until I went out and priced them. I had thought it was only an option on the top of the line. Looks like it can be added to pretty much any f150 as an engine option now.

Re: Towing with an EcoBoost

When I ordered my truck it was listed as a $1,000 upgrade, but there was a factory rebate special that knocked it down to $500 bucks.
