Re: Time to get started on the starcraft resto.

Many of our Starcraft boats had the white foam in them from the factory. So it isn't the worst thing you could use. However, it will waterlog eventually if left in water. If you take care of it and keep it covered, it will probably be fine. It's not ideal though like extruded.

I believe most of our boats had styrofoam. I think that the OPs foam is polyiso which is different than styro. I could be wrong tho.

Sooo things have slowed way down this week, and the work has gotten pretty tedious I have removed all of the rivets remaining in the ribs and stringers. I have cleaned all of the limber holes. My air compressor went belly up so it looks as if that is going to slow painting way down. I am scraping the white foam and going the pool noodle route. I can get them from the Dollar tree for the same price as the white foam. So 70 of them are on their way.

So one more question from everyone when drilling into rivets I am getting quite a few of them that are just spinning with the drill. How do I rectify that to get them out. Up until this point I have just been hitting them with the grinder.

i think if you start out with a fast rpm and a light feed, you are better off. less chance to GRAB the rivet.....but I hope you are only talking about drilling POP rivets out...as in all the above hull structural parts of the boat....NOT the solid rivets holding the hull to the ribs!!

I would not try to drill them out!, you have no guide... you should grind them off lightly, until even with the adjoining material... then punch them the rest of the way with an undersize punch...

youll mess everything up with a walking drill bit, if you try to drill the solid rivets out

Bob the only one being drilled are the pop rivets. Well I did have to drill a few non pop rivets on the cap to get the transom out but they were center punched first to get straight drills. I am only drilling the rivets that used to hold the floor in place.

Can you slightly re-buck the rivets that spin, then try drilling them out after?

No because of the way they are fastened to the ribs I can't get behind them to do both sides.

I fit about 72 in mine with some scrap leftover. So you're pretty close (I did leave a large area for my in-floor storage). If you can get some extra behind your side panels that would be great.

WELL I am not going that extreme BUT my whole family is going to sign and date the transom (except for the little one) he is going to put a hand print on it.

I found it was much easier to use my wrecking bar and a hammer on the rivets, 2 hits with the rivet head in the V and they popped completely out.

Well it seems like it has been forever since I have done any serious updating to this thread, probably because it has been. No pictures in how long now? I better do something less people start lighting the torches.

So I got tired of doing destruction work and it finally took the wind out of my sails, I had to do something to make myself move forward and feel like I was making progress instead of just scouring and vaccuuming the hull over and over and over. So after removing all of the rivets in the ribs.

I started with this.

And started fitting the floor.

I got as far as here before I had to stop.

Looking good, what are your plans for material to cover the decking?

Deck going in will always fuel the need to get her back together.

Using the jigsaw to cut a continuous curve while holding a bevel will wear your arms out. If I had it to do over again right or wrong I would have used the router with a bevel bit I think I could have gotten a better result.

I have just a few gaps here and there no more than 1/16th of an inch at any given spot. So I am satisfied with it.

Re: Time to get started on the starcraft resto.

While laying the floor I had absolutely no cardboard around the shop to make templates with I am waiting to get some cardboard before doing the bow area. What was surprising is that the curve in the bow starts at the second piece of flooring and it was very tedious doing it all with a tape measure so it really slows down progress, enough excuses. I am sure you all are waiting for pics not much accomplished today except I SCORED on these.

70 of them for $54.88

Then I started on the transom (still no cardboard though) and unfortunately there is 1/32 " of a gap on the sides is that close enough or should I be redoing the transom again?

Close enough on the transom for sure.
