Re: Time to get started on the starcraft resto.

I did forget to mention that we had a new neighbor move in about 5 weeks ago. A really nice guy, his girlfriend and child. He has been watching me work on the Starcraft for the last little bit and coming over to the house and chatting with me while I have been working.

On Saturday he showed up with another project going on the back burner. He bought a fully rotted Phantom bass boat complete with broken transom.

I told him I would be happy to help him when the clean up and grinding is done. He is welcome to use shop space AFTER that mess is done.

I thought toons had playpens?

You are nice to the new guy.

Maybe not considering how bad my glassing skills are.

Nah there is to much junk in the way with seats and stuff.

Re: Time to get started on the starcraft resto.

You never realize how much crap is in a boat until you see it all infront of you .

We Started here

We ended here today.

The floor and transom are going to be double possibly triple sealed in epoxy. All the little stuff seats and stuff that can be replaced easily are getting one coat.

I most certainly mixed a little hot this time as I could feel the container getting hot in my hand while epoxying today. I am not sure if I mixed it a little hotter, but it was 20 degrees warmer outside today than when I epoxied last.

You could add spar varnish to build protection & it likely wouldnt take as long to prep, coat or re-coat after all the epoxy is done. Gotta cover the exposed bare epoxy to anyway.

are you sure that's all from 1 boat?!!

I'm guessin' that you double-checked whether or not there were any personal attachments to your mixing pot this time

Yeah I was thinking exterior porch paint.

There certainly not many trees left it definetly took me back a little when I realized how much I had actually cut.

Hehe nope

This time I went to the Family Dollar and Purchased two cheap measuring cups and a whole bunch of mixing containers.

Yes it is seriously all from one boat.

I think your going to find, that it is not so reasonably priced, but DJ Peters found a supplier.

Yeah I found a supplier as well At $2.50 per linear foot. :hopelessness::boink:

If anyone is curious the only supplier that I have found at this point is Wefco the number is 0101g

Don't skimp on the epoxy Sig, you're going to love that stuff more than you know the longer you own that boat.

SO Not to much to show at this point I spent a good portion of the weekend playing at the camper. Unfortunately no fishing got do though. Soooo many people out there launching their boats made me want to get motivated even more.

I did however get these though, and did some more mounting and dry run stuff on the trailer, unfortunately the weather cooled off a bit so its taking the epoxy a while to cure fully.

Yes it is all Stainless steel and stout as crap. I feel it is much needed considering I use the transom hooks to tow skiers and such.

Do you all think i should use a router to recess them or do you think they will be ok just mounted.

Don't bother with the router. Flush mount is just fine. Cutting recesses will make the area weaker. Either way though ....they will be strong as all heck.

I was kind of thinking flush mount its going to be stronger. It don't have to be pretty just strong, especially with the amount of abuse that area takes.

I'm with BA - leave them proud of the surface. Flush mount is cutting away the wood that gives the strength. That is a nice chunk of SS.

Re: Time to get started on the starcraft resto.

So I have an AWESOME family. Today I was informed that my Father's Day and Birthday present from my wife kids mom dad and sister is going to be new decals, rubrail insert, and a stereo and speakers for the boat.

As Far as a progress update not much I started sealing holes in the transom skin, the transom has been sparred and is going back in now.

This is the sloppiest freaking work I have ever done, and is going to take alot of cleanup, which unfortunately with 5200 is no easy task.

Basically what I did, is I used the aluminum from the old floor doubler cut it into pieces and made plates to go behind the transom skin. I absolutely positively slathered the back of the aluminum plates in 5200 then bolted them through in a few holes that were already in the transom. I bolted them tight until the 5200 started seeping out all the way around the edges. I started JB welding the little remaining pinholes from this that and the other years of abuse.

As you can I see I need to sand this all the way down to scratch and start over. I think rather than using the JB weld in the tubes I need to get the jb weld putty because I don't think that I feel comfortable with that result maybe I will look into Marinetex or something else as well with as much 5200 is behind those holes they won't leak but I am NOT happy. I do intend to take the transom back down and repaint the whole thing when I am done so I am not worried about messing up the paint.

Edit I phrased that wrong, I am repainting the hull, not the transom itself.

Then I went to Lowes and bought all new stainless hardware OUCH. I remounted the transom. With all new stainless hardware, and gobs of 5200 I used an entire tube of 5200 today just sealing up bolt holes.

After the epoxy and spar if the transom rots I have done my best I can change it again, BUT I am excited because I feel as if this is the first step to reconstruction.
