Re: Time to get started on the starcraft resto.

Ok everyone today's update involves sanding questions. I am starting this whole prep for paint thing and am running into a few little issues. No matter how smooth I try to get it the differences from the zinc chromate and the factory paint are really easy to spot. Of course the zinc chromate is just to fill in the bare spots at this point but I am sincerely afraid that as beat up as the factory paint was that no matter how much I sand it is all just going to bleed through.

This is just a few examples.

This is just me playing with the zinc chromate a little early. You can really see the spots bleeding through and if its showing through now it is only going to be magnified when I go to shoot paint.

This is what most of the scratches start out looking like.

This is what I am trying to sand them all to look like before treatment.

I am not so much concerned about the spots shown above as they are all below the waterline. I am VERY concerned about this though, I have basically torn the sides of the boat apart trying to get the glue from the old vinyl decals off, I had to go all the way down to 40 grit to get that stupid glue off.

I was just playing around a bit with the primer tonight and this is the best I could get it to look. How bad are the imperfections going to bleed through.

Have you only used the ZC so far? ZC is not a cover paint. The primer is the fill and smooth coat. That's why you sand the primer before top coat.

Is this ^^^ 1 coat or 2 coats of primer or ZC? Might need a light scuff & a wash before a 2nd coat of primer.....As GA said, ZC then primer........

This got posted in another SC thread this past week:

Looks like good coverage on 'good' factory paint, but is 2 coats. Paint on the gunwales was stripped to bare aluminum....... Last few posts at the end have some pix of the paint in process.........

Honestly that was just me playing around with the zinc chromate. I have two coats of that for all bare spots, then I have a high build primer to go over all of it after that too. I am just worried that 4 days of nothing but sanding is going to be all for nothing. Like I said I am trying to get it all so that I can't feel any of the imperfections when running my hand over it. Currently the boat is in the shop drying from being washed with vinegar.

Once you've applied paint, you're not touching the hull bare handed, correct?

A light scuff between coats of primer often eliminates slight imperfections when you shoot high build primer.

Sig, you really don't need two coats of ZC. All ZC does is create a binder for the primer to stick to and just needs to be a dusting coat. It won't hurt that you have two coats, just not needed. As I said earlier, the primer coats are for filling and smoothing. If the primer is blemish free, so will your final paint coats.

I have a whole bag of latex gloves (the admiral works at a Dr's office)

Well I just decided to go ahead and do the zinc chromate and let it cure and dry things are smooth enough that I can' feel any imperfections. I have been sanding now for about 4 days. Hoping to start laying primer soon.

when sanding out old paint imperfections you have to feather the edges finishing @ about 320 grit prior to primer if you don't want them to bleed thru. SE primer is only a light coat. 2 coats of the Bare Metal High Build primer will then help Hide them. If you can feel a ridge...You'll see it.

Thanks everyone for the advice that was exactly what I did was to feather the edges so that you couldn't feel the difference when running your hand over top of it, as that is what I have always been told if you can feel it you will see it.

You can actally see it feathered here with factory paint going to factory primer.

Self etching primer done.

It was at this point I started thinking I would have been better off to just strip it to the bare metal and go from there.

Then I had the fleeting thought that it would be cool to do a desert camo paint job.

I am laying extremely thin multiple layers of primer to avoid runs dripping, and minimize sanding. The self etching is bleeding through still but I figure by the third coat it will no longer be seen.

The great news is though where the old decals were and everything is smooth as glass. I am still getting the hang of the spray gun but so far I am not unhappy.

Its curing in the shop over tonight and possibly tomorrow. Then another primer coat possibly wednesday unless it cures and is ready sooner.

I actually mixed a thick coat of primer up and shot it on and scotch bright/wet sanded and that filled in perfectly. I had very similar damage to my factory paint as well as the removal of names and mc numbers. I used the Majic metal primer.

Re: Time to get started on the starcraft resto.

This is my family's third boat the other two were basically junk glasser's. One of them should have never been on the water, I decided to stop messing with it when I joined this forum. The other one we ran for three years and was sold to move onto this project. We have never bothered to name any of the boats. The first one I paid $450.00 basically got a trailer and an Old 40 hp Johnson that I sold for $250.00, and got a good trailer out of the deal.

The next one was a 15' Glasser that I sold for this boat we ran her for three years. Took the $250 and bought a Merc 50hp which i traded for an Evinrude. She was and still is solid as a rock no rot anywhere. I paid $175 for the HULL locked up Merc and worn out trailer sold the locked up merc threw some vinyl and carpet in it and rode it until we outgrew it.

Long story short we are now on the Starcraft basically our dream boat. We are going to name her. My wife and I sincerely struggled for our first three years together, and had a rough year last year unexpected pregnancy. We are now financially stable and have a new respect and love for each other. Everyday I wake up next to her is another great day. So we have finally obtained the things in life we are looking for and a new found love and respect for each other so on splash day she will be christened

Silver Lining.

I wish I could take credit for it but the Admiral is the one who thought it up.

It was also between

The Aluminator.

A Salt Weapon. (wouldn't have made much sense since she is freshwater only).

Dumb Luck The admiral says she has been impressed by the quality and effort I have put into it, my response is always the same its just luck.

B N Nautti Just because it was funny.

And the really good news it that since I have now been over EVERY square inch of the hull it appears as if there has never been a name on her. Meaning no sacrifices or rituals to make it happen.

The scary part is now the Admiral has set a HARD date for splash date of my birthday. Meaning I have got to get moving. She said splashing her is my birthday present and she expects to see it done.

I have still got

Paint
Electrical
Epoxy
Vinyl
Carpet
Motor
Trailer

NOTE to your future self: ALWAYS LET THE ADMIRAL NAME THE BOAT! :biggrin1:

Sometimes it is better to be lucky then good, only way I figure I've kept my Admiral this long :)

Don't knock yourself out on imperfections on the bottom. Trust me, you will NEVER SEE THEM. Shoot, my paint is falling off the bottom and it only kinda bothers me.

Yeah after 3 straight days of sanding, cleaning sanding, cleaning, I got everything on the sides feathered out enough and most of the bottome feathered out enough. There are a few places along the keel that just aren't going to be mirror smooth hopefully when its done it will be something to be proud of.

I have all the supplies to finish it up now it is just time. That is why I sprayed it right before I left for work so I wouldn't be tempted to go out and play while it was curing.

HOLY crap though I couldn't believe the price of the Majic Harderner $18 for a PINT
