Wet it down a bit with the compactor . Looks like good clean fill should do ok . You could always do a compaction test . That may be required anyhoo ..
Woody yall must have had one of them Florida sink holes under that slab ! Or maybe the leaking pipe had something to do with it .. :D

I'm not to worried about settling, its only about 18" of sand, most is much less. If it was dirt I would have compacted it in 6 to 8" lifts like Wood mentioned. Decker, I'm not sure how many yards, I would guess about 50 (non compacted). I had 6 loads hauled in, but I have about one load left over. I also still need to grade things out and vibrate it.

Carp, that's a lot of steel, and a whole heck of a lot intersections to tie, using a quick tie or not.....

Looking good though.

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

I have a tendency to get carried away with things if you haven't noticed :D. I like steel, cheap insurance, concrete sucks in tension....excellent in compression, but sucks in tension. Understanding materials is key to a good design.... learned that the hard way.....

We also beat the hell out of the sand with the vibratory plate 3 times, grading and filling in-between passes. I don't want to do this twice, I have done that way to many times in my life. Take pride and do it right the first time :D

I didn't tie every intersection. probably 50% of them. Mostly to line up the bars to start with, then enough to keep them position vertical and horizontally.

I wouldn't even think about pouring it...my flat work would look like a ski slope! Hopefully I have a crew showing up Wednesday morning to beat the cold weather. If so, its framing on turkey day weekend! :D

As for help, I have a guy who knows how to work.....never stops, if something need done he does it. You don't find too many people like that these days. I feel very lucky to have him on board!

Now THAT looks like some Concrete Re-Bar Slab preb work. NICE!!!!! Been There Done That Back in the Day!!!! She'll be Well supported. I'd suggest wetting her down a bit on Tuesday afternoon if you're gunna pour on Wednesday so that sand won't suck the concrete dry to quickly. What Mix are you planning on using for the pour?

Nothing special Wood, just a 3000# mix with air in it (turned down slab edges will be exposed to freeze thaw). I'm toying with the idea of adding non-calcium chloride heat to it given the forecast. We'll see what they say tomorrow, probably over-kill...since they are making a big deal about the "cold front", it will more than likely be 75 on Friday! :D

I know it is completely unrelated but since we are talking about weather and I think you guys will appreciate it. We organized a boat/car/bike show at Gas Monkey Bar n Grill this past Sunday. Man did we get lucky with the weather. We knocked it out of the park collecting 772 toys and $205 in cash for Toys for Tots. We ended up with ~30 boats including everything for the Top Fuel Hydros Spirit of Texas & HotLicks all the way to a restored '57 Cowell wooden outboard. There was a Century there with a Hemi that just came off an 8 year restoration. Absolutely beautiful boat. Kebin Kinsley brought out his nostalgia funny car and he let me sit int he drivers seat while they fired it. Man what a rush. Jordan brought he grocery getter from the show. Half dozen Lambos, Ferrari F430. There are a lot of pictures filtering in. I am looking for some of the wooden boats. Huge thanks to all that helped organize it and all that came out. To say you guys deserve a pat on the back is an understatement.

I received an email I believe is worth sharing. The fact that we provided that opportunity for David to show his Dad that picture is worth more than words.

Matt,
We loved it! The members who came outnumbered our 3 boats by a long shot. In addition to the members pictured, three others made appearances during the day. Of special significance to me was the chance to meet those fine young Marines. My Dad is a 90-year-old Marine, and he'll be thrilled to see the photo of the Marines in front of the boat he bought in 1969! Thanks for including us.

David

Sorry for the thread jack Bobby. Now back to the Pontoon/Barn builds.

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

it is a good size piece of real-estate...about 2,200sf, with the lean to section on the back I'm almost at 3500 sf. Believe it or not I'm sure I can fill it up.....you can't have too many projects :joyous:

Good idea JB I could open up the boat restoration strip mall....hmmm may have to think about that one!

It is pretty sexy as concrete goes Decker, lol....they did a nice job.

Sphelps....I'm hoping most of the nails come out of the nail gun nice and strait...I have two Senco framing nailers ready to go! I'm sure there will be some manual nail beating / bending....there always is! Thanks for thoughts on helping out, maybe one of these days I can have you guys over for a burger, beverage and a kick the "pontoon" design session in the barn, lol!
