Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

no teak, just hickory, oak, walnut, and pecan. fortunately my biggest walnut and pecan trees made it. one of them is 16' around the trunk, the other is 14'! they are some serious trees, lol! the good thing is my barn got whacked (usually work on the boats in my dads shop next door). The pontoon was too tall to fit in it.....so guess I will have to build a taller one!

Glad to hear you made it through the first round Bobby. Let me know if I can do anything to help. Hopefully the second round didn't get you.

To add insult to injury it blew around a lot of metal that we just piled up and took out a few more tree branches....but we are making progress. Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

Just a quick update.....still working on the tornado damage, but making progress on the new barn. Hopefully the pontoon will be in there in the next few months for a make over.

Nothing about a 3' 6" pecan log to the lumber mill?

That'd be GREAT to work with!

That's a BARN! not a barn..

Is that an early 50's Chevy truck I spy in the back?

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

I have pecan, oak and walnut stacked up on the front and back porches....almost 1000 bf last time I counted....the 3.5 trunk was my paper shell tree, damn it! The squirrels aren't happy. I ask for some 2" slices out of the trunk, might make some nice coffee tables.

The barn will be 3,500 sf...a big part of it storage. You have a sharp eye sir, but you missed it by a decade, its a 46 art deco chevy 1-1/2 ton......another one of my projects, I won't go into the 50 and 51 Mercury's and Lincolns..... oh and there is a pontoon boat also :D

Most excellent...looks like you got some good height with that one. I wish i had one with a high door and ceiling.

Cant wait to see it done!

It will be 16' clear to the ceiling with 12'x12' doors (two). Also one 9'x8' door 2' off the ground, sort of a mini dock door. I'm excited....ready to get the mud pored and a slab to work off of. I hate the footing part, but that is what makes a good building great......I'm ready to frame the walls and set some trusses!

Ah man. I had a 46 1/2 ton Chevy in high school. It was such a cool truck. I wanted to restore it but I was talked into selling it. I have always regretted selling that truck. One day I will have another one. Any chance you want to trade for an Ambassador?

What's new w/ tie/hold downs? Not much going to stand up to an F5 twister, but anything 'new' that'll help that giant barn standup to the next near miss?

I'm hanging on to the truck, sorry Matt. It was my grandpa's....it has been driven from here to CA and back....then to FL and back, he moved the family with it twice!

I hope there is no next time, I have lived here 40 years and this is the only one that ever been close. I did add some tricks, the columns are an engineered laminated product, it will also have shear walls which is very unusual in barns....of course lots of tie downs and Simpson clips. The reality is nothing short of 1' thick concrete will survive an F5.

Arch, Barn construction is looking good! I may have to do some bargaining with you on some of that pecan lumber, if you have an inclination to part with some of it.

Major barn envy here! Yep not much gunna hold up to a tornado . I built my house with ICF foam blocks . Hoping it will hold up to hurricane or two down here .

Wood, I will keep you in mind if I part with the pecan....right now I just have it stacked, sticker and drying.

I like the ICF systems, but you pay through the nose for them around here. We did build a house out of concrete that was 32' tall, but sandwiched the foam in-between two outside layers of concrete...sort of the reverse of an ICF with the concrete exposed...very contemporary house.

That is killer that you have that kind of history with the truck. If you stumble across a 46 1/2 ton up there in OK keep me in mind.
