Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

All suggestions welcomed wood! I used a high gloss p-lam (formica) when I made the inner transom skin for Miss Morgan. Worked like a champ, and thought about it on this deal too....but ruled it out on cost and the sanding the bondo concern. The melamine of course is much cheaper, might be the way to go. I just have this lacquer thing in my head to work through.....I'm thinking about from the working in a body shop perspective.

Speaking of other ideas, I also want to toy with using quick setting joint compound instead of bondo. That might work better with the melamine. Of course it is water based which brings up wood and moisture content / swelling issues.

This all sounded really simple when I thought it up. lol!

Just an FYI, some of you were interested in the jeep, just thought I would let you know I posted the first video on it. Just check my youtube channel if you are interested. This one is more of a walk around video, but I have some others that I will be up loading on my progress.

Good to hear the Jeep is coming along. Nice to know the pontoon is at least still in the kitchen even though it may be a little past the back burner. My quick powder coat project on the Daytona has just about turned into a complete re-rig.

lol funny how that happens huh? I was going to "fix" the wiring on the jeep, which quickly turned into replacing everything except the ground cable on the battery!

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

Well the pontoon may get delayed again.....my house got whacked pretty good by the tornado, lost a lot of windows a small section of roof deck and more or less just beat up the outside of the house. Lost half the roof on my barn and about 1500' of chain link fence and pretty much everything that was outside. Miss Morgan seems untouched.....a 2x6 came through the roof about 2' from her, but I haven't seen any damage to her. I need get her out this weekend. I have been too busy cutting up about 100 trees. The pontoon was blown off the trailer, I think there are a few new dents in the pontoons. But at least everyone in my neighborhood is safe.

Oh wow, man! First and foremost: Very glad you are safe.. and I hope that you and others can pick up the pieces and rebuild quickly...

With respect to more superficial stuff: How did the Jeep fair?

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

I know the feeling, Hurricane Sandy knocked a whole gable end wall of a barn down here, plus numerous other barn doors and metal roofing.

Having my priorities in line, and assessing the plan of repair....I proceeded to ignore it for now and just work on the boat! :D

good luck with the party barge...

jeep had an overhead door sort of wrapped around it. I think it is ok other than a scratch or two...but haven't looked at it really closely. Been to busy trying to clean up my place and my parents place next door. I got there trees cut up, the pile is about 6'x20'x250' or so. Mine will probably be just as big when I get done.

Too bad you're not further north, a log pile that big would be worth something as firewood. Even at the start of the summer.

Glad you & neighbors only had property damage.

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

thanks guys! no I wasn't at home but at my office a few miles away. my parents were at their house next door but they went underground into the cellar. I promise you that you do not want to be above ground when a monster like that comes to town. I was on the edge and lost 100 year old trees. my friends and neighbors lost everything......just glad I have something to rebuild. it was really sad to see so much I had known all my life obliterated. but thanks to a lot of very nice people, we are putting things back together. This is Oklahoma, everyone comes together. I had a client send me his tracked bobcat and said keep it till you are done. he also offered me his $700K motor coach to live in....All of the contractors we work with sent e-mails to the effect of "if you need welders, carpenters, generators or heavy equipment call and we will take care of it". one of them sent me a grappling bucket for the bobcat, I've spent a lot of time in bobcats, but it is staggering what you can move with one. the piles of trees are huge. If anything I was overwhelmed with generosity. thanks to any of you that helped, our thanks go out to you.

An even more glorious use! Unless their teak, in which case keep some board feet for boat building, but I don't think you lost any 100yr old teak trees in OK.

May the lumber buyers be especially generous on their grading & payments. Hope ya have some tree sale funds left after all the rebuilding.... Boats man, gotta pay for the boats: parts/rebuild/redesign... Whatever.... obligatory adult frosty libations, ramp fees, gas, tow vehicle maintenance.... etc.......etc............etc.................

Tell me again why do I want to join this club???

B.O.A.T. is right......... :faint2:
