Thats an ugly mess! Id agree that 99% of these old boats need love before being sea worthy.

Find any good sheds?? Lol Im a hunter first and foremost. Boating/fishing is only for the off season of hunting for me.

Some of the older TOP's had an issue with brittle wires. New wiring harness is a big expense or non existent

something in the manufacturing process was corrosive to the wires and/or made in insulation brittle. The reason there arenā€™t many left. I sold my 1975 Merc 650 while it was still running on my mechanics recommendation. It still started and ran (and ran hard) but that never sat right with me so I upgraded. He said the trigger or distributors werenā€™t rebuildable if the wires went bad, so it was a ticking time issue. Maybe they corrected by the 80ā€™s I donā€™t know? I think they are still TBolt ignitions?
I carefully sleeved any poor looking wiring with heat shrink to get me by for a couple years.
Food for thought if youā€™re go into keep the 80ā€™s motor.

These are cool boats. What are your plans for the console? My brother just bought one. He was talking about making an aluminum tower with canvas roof and putting lights up there. Like a Boston whaler

Current plan is to sell the ā€˜82 70hp Merc and find a late ā€˜80s or newer 115hp. Iā€™ve got some time to sort it out and see what pops up for sale.

Iā€™ve looked at some of the folding towers, but will likely just stick with the stock console configuration, modifying the dash layout and controls to my liking. I donā€™t want to run into issues with garage storage and the open concept will probably be more suitable for fishing. Will probably modify the windshield mounts to some sort of quick release too.

Iā€™d love a big center console with tower and rocket launchers, but the 18ft with open layout is a much more logical and practical application for the MN lakes and rivers Iā€™ll be fishing.

Just some interesting notes from the tear down...

Both the bow deck vertical supports(not just the horizontal lip/edge like on the SS models) and the lower side supports are solid riveted to/thru the hull. I drilled out the bow supports in order to get the front deck section out, but left the side supports in place for the time being, but will likely drill those out as well for cleanup and painting. I suppose this is what helps to provide the structural integrity to the center console hulls in the absence of the side/dual consoles(or full dash) and side panels typical to the other models.

Both of these areas were also loaded with floatation foam, in addition to what was found behind all the aft side panels, the aft splashwell side enclosures, underneath the full length of the gunnels, under the console, and under the helm seat/fuel tank enclosure. This was all of the white beaded EPS Styrofoam variety. Under the deck consisted of the pour in variety on both sides of the hull, with the center channel left empty, likely to allow for both drainage and the run of wires/controls/steering from the console to the motor. Curious as to whether all this extra above deck floatation was designed as a "replacement" for the floatation that would typically fill the center of the under deck hull as well. Just much more than I've seen on my other two Starcrafts, and the first I've seen it incorporated under the gunnels, but this could be something that became more standard on the 80's models?

Either way, I'll be replacing all with XPS in any areas I can fit it.

that workbench is going to be stout!

Man...worst of both foam worlds...soggy pour-in foam AND styrene balls clogging up the limber holes.

Hopefully the corrosion will be minimal!

I need to get an updated picture. Still not yet completed, but coming along. Between the 3 year patio project I'm trying to finish up, deck stairs I'm building, the honey do list, and the kids activities... I'll get it wrapped up one of these days :) Built it to the same height as my table saw to double as an infeed or outfeed table and adding a utility strip to triple as a banquet/crock pot/serving table for when we have family gatherings/kids birthdays, etc. in the garage.

Turkey season starts next week, then it's go time after that. Trying to get my 9 year old his first bird with a bow this year.

Not sure if this is the correct way to link to another thread, of if there is a better way to do so, but just posted this in the general restorations forum:

I'd be kinda paranoid of black vinyl. Flashback to vinyl car seats growing up. Looks like it'll be a fun boat for MN waters.

Yeah, probably not the best idea. Just pondering different color options and kind of like this theme...

Probably end up with the storm grey again on the deck, but the gunnels still have me thinking. Maybe a set of 72" black Traxstech Tracks to give some contrast...just need to save more pennies:)

I would avoid anything dark in a boat, those surfaces will get very hot.

Was going to make a post in the general restorations forum, but I trust the advice here more...

Air hammer/rivet setter - what's a good, reasonably priced option for setting solids? Don't think my standard pneumatic air hammer is up to the task, time to make an investment.

I bought a X4 rivet gun from ats and it works flawlessly. I went with the X4 because there is a fair amount of 1/4" rivets I'll be doing. I think it was $200 but for the amount of rivets I have to do it was for sure worth the price. No regrets. I don't like the rivet sets I got from though because they have a lip on the head that leaves dents on the sides of the rivet heads

I didn't buy a ATS rivet gun, but a used airplane rivet gun will also do the trick. As @Mikesta suggested, I went with a x4 to drive 1/4 rivets too. You do have to be a little careful with the 3/16 rivets, but after some practice and dialing in your air pressure it will be easy.
