Re: New Here, Need HELP!

Hey another question....as far as ordering gaskets and stuff for the engine, do i need to spend the extra money and buy the "marine grade" parts?

no bud........the gaskets ans stuff are all standard motor stuff.

BUT there are some items like starters....distributors, alternators, carbs that are totally different.....and really spendy.

but your base motor and most of those parts are already there

I knew all that stuff was different but thanks for clearing up the rest. i was told at napa that anything for a boat is more expensive....that the gasket kits were 200 something and if it was just for a car it was about 90 bucks.

yeah the second you say marine they get greedy. but if you open the box and look at the two side by side......there is no difference in the gaskets

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

can you please supply a link to this?....i know about sei drives... my friend has the rights for this area.....but there is a ton more than just the drive.

inside the motor compartment....everything is different. the transom inner and outers.....the bell housing..the steering linkage....the power steering linkage....the shifter.....the coupler, the exhaust........everything.....

any one of those parts i just mentioned.....is worth about 300 new.

and if you wanna go to the outside.....and start pricing the gymbal.bell....well....that is usually worth more than the drive.

so if you could please educate me on the supply and price of "the conversion kit" i would, (and so would a lot of other people) really appreciate it !

thanks....just post a link to all the parts.
That was a typo. I meant SEI.

Nah. If he wants to get rid of the OMC he can repower with an SCI stern drive. It will run him about 2 grand with a 3 yr. warranty & is a direct bolt up with a new pivot housing which is part of the conversion kit. And he won't need anything you mentioned except maybe a new shifter. The SCI is essentially an aftermarket Mercruiser & parts are interchangeable. Just sayin'..................

yes i understand that,,,,no worries.

i was talking about the conversion kit you were mentioning., and can you please possibly give us the link for it.

the cost of a conversion is not just the drive and plugging the hole.

if you have a cheap conversion kit......can we please see it? a kit with EVERYTHING....bellhousing, trim pump, coupler, bell, gimball..exhaust..everything.
you will save us all a lot of time and money

i know for a fact these parts are worth over 8k for all of them......if you have a cheaper solution.....please give us the link... doesn't matter if its SEI or merc....just post the link to the FULL kit.

thanks

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

not many updates lately guys i've just been cutting away and tearing foam out of every nook and cranny. will be tearing out the transom this weekend.

i did notice on the sides of the hull that there must be some areas where there are small pieces of wood that have been half-assed glassed over. they seem to be rotted out inside as well so i assume i need to tear these out? do they need to be replaced? they were obviously there for a reason... i assumed the hull was only fiberglass, correct? there also seems to be a few places in the back of the boat under the engine where there is some wood glassed over on the floor. these are most likely rotten too, take em out?

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

alright here we go......got the transom out today and got it all cleaned up a bit.

There were actually 3 layers of wood in the transom and a layer of glass in between each which surprised me. it's ironic that i was mad every time i actually ran into good wood while chipping away at that thing. i think it took a little under 3 hours.

everything went pretty well but i'm bummed about how far the rot goes up unde the consoles. you can see it in the pics and i really have no idea how to do it so any advice is welcome.

in between each layer it was mostly mush except up top.

This is where i dont know what to do. you can see the rot goes up under pretty far. not sure how to get the floor out because the consoles are gelcoated in i believe. i'm pretty sure the whole bow of the boat is gelcoated in but havent looked into it too deeply yet.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

can you see the deterioration on the hull down close to the deck? not sure what it was but i guess just grind it down re-do it.

there are a couple spots like this on both sides of the hull. these are the little wooden slats i was talking about...doesnt seem like they serve much purpose.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

ok.....actually ....you don't look too bad under there. the starboard side it rot till the bulkhead, port looks fine.

take your sawz all and cut it right to the cap bulkhead.......
an inch under there and the rot will stop.

you will have to cram a new chunk of ply under the console....then glass the stuffings out of it.

or....you could pry up the console a few inches.....this will make it easier for you to stick the ply in.

it will be tough working under there..... but it can be done.

your other option is to lift the cap......the gellcoated deck and front area are one piece.....so when they come out...it all comes out.
that is a lot of work for a 6 inch piece of wood bud.

i would cut out the stringer rot....and sister another piece to the stringer....

you are almost done the rip and strip.

i didnt get a good look at the wood flange you were mentioning....so i can really comment......but i would say its a deck support

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

Jig, I have taken your legal advice on my boat situation. I think it is a lesson that a lot of us have learned here... Thankfully its not the end of the world. I must say the next boat I buy, I will have been educated what to look for.
As your attorney, I advise you to start drinking heavily!

the first boat I bought leaked like a sieve and the motor would only work in reverse. The guy wouldn't give me my money back so I just had to bite the bullet.

I think you've just learned boat buying lesson #1, it's not going to help you now... but will in the future should you ever decide to buy another used boat.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

LSC.. hows the project going? We do have the same boat... and looks like the same problem. Hows your project going? I just started the rebuild process. I just put the second tab on my transom the third is going on tonight. Planning on getting the stringers started this weekend.

What are you planning on doing with the wood that is in the v of the hull? I had a 1/4in plywood on both sides of the v that was rotted out from bow to stern. I am not sure i want to put plywood back there.
