Re: New Here, Need HELP!

Wow, what a terrible situation to be in and I am sorry to hear that someone has to go through this to learn a lesson. Luckily, it was only $3,000.00 and not $13,000. I agree with most of the comments here, you need to bite the bullet and just have it repaired. I believe in Karma, this guy will get his due.

yeah it could be a lot worse i guess. how do i check to see if the floatation foam is waterlogged? should it only be in the back of the boat?

Flotation is under the floor and I expect you will be taking this out based on the problem. Let's hope all you have is bad bellows? But dont count on it.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

I dont think your going to take that kind of water on just from a "bad" transom.

Yes the trans might be rotted .. but that kinda of water coming in is usually a broken/cracked through hull fitting or a bad drive bellows or something like that .. not a rotted out transom.

Did you find where exactly the water is coming in ?
YD.

Pics or more info would help ..

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

i dug into it lastnight and it seems like everything is rotten. "replacing the floor" apparently meant putting used sheets of plywood down and covering with carpet. it's all rotten.....everything.

will post some pics tonight after work.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

not to come off rude I feel your pain as my 1st boat was a clunker due to my lack of pressure treated wood knowledge... i'd spend more effort taking legal action against the seller then even worrying about how bad of shape it's in.... unless you can part out the trailer, motor & transom, aluminum parts, scrap the rest....

just don't forget to document everything w/photos as you go incase you take this sucker to court... even if the fool confronts you in public/person the more you have the better =)

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

If the original ad for the boat said "lake ready" and you have a copy of it hang on to it. In the event you do wind up in a legal battle of some sort, that might have some validity as false advertising or misrepresentation in a private sale (especially if it doesn't say "as is" in the ad) and help turn the tide.

Sorry for the loss. That's a heavy blow. Hopefully there's a way to salvage some things out of this and perhaps recover somewhat. Best wishes on it.

I never thought of that! You can pay for it, then take him to "small claims" as it's only the last Grand? No lawyer needed. That is a great idea! Thanks Yacht Dr. !! That is a safe bet for ANYONE! I sure hope you get this worked out. This happens way to much. And it sounds like the outdrive, not the hull. The seal failed........ I will be praying for ya!!!! Hope it works out.................. Good luck...D

seriously scrap it? damn.

Trying to get some good pics but every time i take the tarp off it starts raining. Not going to complain about it, here in NC it's always welcome. i can get all the wood from work basically free and replacing the foam would be no issue either as i work for a commercial roofing company that uses a ton of 2 part foam. i'm sure something would work.

pics/updates on the situation coming soon i promise.
Here's the one the wife has been showing off anyway.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

that is a nice enough candidate boat for a full resto.

the omc motor and drive is its down fall. part it out.

to do the resto is no problem.......but you will still be stuck with the omc.
you might do rhe resto and sell it.......but you still with have the issue of the leaking bellows.....as yd said....10 mins wont sink a rotted transom....a thru hull or the bilge plug was open.

as soon as i saw the floating floor statement .....i knew that the po just threw some wood down and a rug over it.

cant speak about the legal issues...im in canada......and if you left the bilge drain plug out its your fault it sank.

BUT.....if you like the boat and want to fix it....you could sell it to recoup the money, and buy a different boat.......after the restoration......you will know what you are looking for in a older boat.

and we are all here to help bud.
good luck with this one.

p.s.....if the owner swore up and down that the boat was good.......he deserves a little back alley justice

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

If you're up to the challenge, the boat is good looking outside. Especially at minimal additional expense, you may well be able to recover some of your loss. You might even consider rebuilding the transom altogether and swap over to a more current drive if you like.

It may be quite the project, but you might find you enjoy it.

plug was in just in case anyone is wondering. it's at a second marina now getting an estimate just in case it does end up going to court or what not.

I would pay the guy, even if he doesn't deserve it. Take the boat and fix it, it is a nice boat and no liers,I mean lawyers They'll take you for more than the resto will cost ya. Good luck.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

The OMC drive is the problem. It would not be worth it. The ONLY reason I went through it with my boat is that I have a 454 bravo combo that was is really good shape, and the exterior and interior was almost perfect.

Would it be worth it to change out the drive?
Is it really that hard to find parts for the OMC?

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

it is very hard to find parts.....but the other thing is...they allways break....so the drive makes the whole boat allmost worthless....its a real drag about omc's.
you could have a 10k boat....but if it has an omc hanging off the back.....no one wants the boat !

it is an expencive swap unless you get a doaner boat with a merc set up.
everything from the motor back is different.

you need a different shifter,
different exhaust mainfolds (most cases)
different coupler
different bellhousing.

you have to rebuild the transom because the holes are different......there is a kit for this.
you need a new transom plate and outer gymbal and bell
and of course the drive.

total value of this deal today is about 5k.
it can be done much cheaper.....but if you go new parts.....thats what you are looking at.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

I just talked to the mech tech here .. he said you can get china made parts which are "junk" in his own words.

He did say you can call Michigan Marine Gear to see if they have some OEM parts there ( apparently they got some overstock OMC parts ).

MMC http://www.michiganmarinegear.com/

Hope it helps you or anyone else here..

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

but isn`t it buyer beware law somewhere that states you looked at it and bought it as is now you need to follow thru with the contract you made, pay him, then take him to court if it was misrepresented. It seems to me you owe him the money because you bought the boat as is,after you looked at it.You did look at it first?
