Re: New Here, Need HELP!

Alright here's somewhat of an update. Sent a letter to the previous owner and the lawyer hasnt heard anything. I've decided to start the project. Here's a few pictures to start out but i'm planning on pulling the motor this saturday so i'll have more details and pictures to come. Any advice or guidance will be much appreciated as I try to dig myself out of this hole I'm in!

Hold the phones, a bit.... Everyone on here knows that I am no expert, but that sure doesn't look an OMC drive in those pics (I should know, I was dumb enough to buy one..) Although I play the role of a lawyer during the day, I can't get involved, except to say two things: (a) laws differ considerably in each state, so go with what your local guy says; and (b) like other folks have suggested...Document everything in pictures (otherwise, it's he said, she said).... and you will in fact start throwing good money after bad at that point.

P.S. nice looking little kiddo in that boat.

Is that a cobra drive?......if so...not as bad as the older omc's. nice looking boat though.....I would be tempted to do an engine/drive swap....using all the info on iboats of course :D

It's a Cobra Pmc. Not as bad as your Stringer as far as parts goes, but not great.

I just read this thread for the first time today. I have to ask because noone else seemed to bash you at all. Why did you not sea trial this boat before the purchase? Also, why no bill of sale? Did you get a title? Did the previous owner say it was water ready or was it documented. If it wasn't documented in the sale add or something, you may be out of luck. And yes, that looks like an omc outdrive. A 1990 should have an omc cobra.

Dude, I thought I was the only one who had luck like that. Here's the thing, you can't control what happens to you in life, but you can control how you react to it. One thing that I've witnessed over and over is that people do shape their own fate. Yep, he got you good, but don't have any more dealings with him ever. He'll get his, and maybe you were meant to walk this little path you've been put on. You never know what it might all mean.

e gads.....a lawyer !!!! quick....everyone hide your wallets !.....lol
just kidding patrick.....really....

and just between you and me....i cant believe this guy paid that amount of money for a boat that is not metal.....it doesn't even have reevits !

and you are correct.....that is a different kind of omc than you have.....its a newer one.....one that just might save this dudes bacon !

to the op.......

that is a cobra....ita a COBRA....kinda like a volvo.....we need to know the year.........we really need to know the year. !!! (of the drive...not the boat)

as far as the restoration job.....we got ya covered.......

start reading in the restoration section.......look at friscos vids.....read my thread.... you have some decisions that you will have to make....poly or epoxy...wood or composite...foam no foam ect...but we can help you make the best informed decision you can with your budget !

in the mean time.......this vid is a MUST WATCH.
you might not fully understand it now....but when you are wrapped like a mummy and itching .....you will.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

lol bud.....no worries....you are totally correct !

quick education......

omc was in business for many years.....did fairly well.....but to make there boats more sellable......they changed the design form what you have to one that would fit in a merc keyhole transom.....that way the new boat purchaser would have a choice of what drive they wanted.......there market shares went up.
they kinda copied volvo.
volvo stepped in and bought them.....i think 1992.... volvo started making changes to them so they could manufacture with volvo parts ....there for, streamilne the cost.
by 95.....volvo totally phased out the old omc parts.....but kept the name, cobra.

so its possible......that this is a volvo drive....there for .....easy pickens for parts and an easy re sale... (still nowhere as easy as a merc)

what that means to this owner....is that he does not have to go thru the same process that you are, with a doaner boat....and a conversion......his restoration is going to be straight forward.....deck transom and stringers.....
yours...we will have to do a little something special to convert from the stringer drive system.....but still no big deal.....

by the way patrick....keep posting in the forums.....it is a great way to learn stuff, !

cheers bud

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

Got a ton of work done this weekend and I'll post pics soon. It is a Cobra out drive. I guess i didn't realize there was such a difference between the older OMC's and the Cobra. Thanks for all the advice and try to keep all the negative talk to a minimum if we can!

It's my first boat that is actually my own so hopefully in a few months I'll be worried about waxing it not whether it will float or not.
My buddy getting it all ready to lift.

More to follow. The boat's pretty rough ad the previous owner did some really shotty "repairs" to get by.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

The boat looks great up top. Sorry about the "below" part. But as my wife has told me many times, "you just paid for your education". When I look at it that way, I don't feel so bad.

As for doing this project, if you have to hire most of the work, it won't be worth it. And if you are going to do it all yourself, do it because there is something you love about this boat compared to moving on to another boat. All of these projects turn out out to be more work than you thought. The deeper you dig kind of thing.

Good luck.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

Well although it's a rocky beginning for you; you're committed now.
And it looks like once all the bad wood is gone and the new is fitted and glassed in, you'll have a really pretty boat and can make some wonderful memories with the little guy. As for the legal part - I would keep every receipt. An attorney will have the best answers for you on how to proceed on that end. As far as the resto; the fellows here will help you through it all and when you splash your boat - the rest won't seem that important. Very good luck with it. That is a real nice looking boat that you'll be proud of when done.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

well.....at least you know someone tryed.....lol

to all people that are looking at this........just screwing pressure treated lumber to the sides of rotted wood stringers IS NOT the way to build a boat.....

but i do beleive that it was built to sell. in other words......someone told the builder to just "do what you can" because im going to sell it.

the lumber on top of the gas tank....is nothing more than a hack job.

did you get the year of the cobra?....it might be straight volvo in an omc's case.

have you taken any core samples yet?

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

calling the policw ill not get you any were! as a police officer my self i would tell you it is a civil matter. the seller did not break any laws selling you the boat. the issue is you bought the boat "in good faith" that the seller was honest with you. i would advise to speek to a lawyer. the last thing you want is to hav a felony record because some guy is an *******!

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

thanks guys, i'll be looking forward to a ton of advice along the way. i got the transom plate off and peeled some caulking off the outside tonight.

as far as core samples go, are you talking about the stringers? i have not taken any yet, planned on replacing EVERYTHING but might get a little lucky.
