Re: New Here, Need HELP!

You did not write a hot check, you stopped payment because of goods misrepresented or not delivered. BIG difference.

...Yes there is a difference, what he did could be called theft by deception!

but isn`t it buyer beware law somewhere that states you looked at it and bought it as is now you need to follow thru with the contract you made, pay him, then take him to court if it was misrepresented. It seems to me you owe him the money because you bought the boat as is,after you looked at it.You did look at it first?

Almost every state has AS_IS laws, your stuck with this. 10 year old + used vehicles are BUYER BEWARE in every state I can think of. Lemon laws are hard to get enforced even on BRAND NEW vehicles.

thanks guys, i'll be looking forward to a ton of advice along the way. i got the transom plate off and peeled some caulking off the outside tonight.

as far as core samples go, are you talking about the stringers? i have not taken any yet, planned on replacing EVERYTHING but might get a little lucky.

If its wood or foam, replace it! That way you know what you have for years to come. I hope you paid him the rest of his money, before he claims theft! Just take him to small claims court to try and recover anything you can of your money. That wont cost as much as a Vampire.....uuuuuuhh Lawyer!

Wow. Just caught up on this one. I HATE that guy. I just had a buddy buy an older range rover that was "fine" on the test drive and kept over heating on the 50 mile drive home. Took it back to the garage and it had low compression in 3 cyls and a blown head gasket... Really sucks. However, you really will learn stuff that's worth it. Looks like you're trucking along and have the right idea. It will probably close to 2k in glass, resin wood etc. for a full resto. Bets of luck, I'll be following closely.

ps looks like a lot of the interior (vinyl etc) is in good shape.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

If it makes you feel any better I just saw a post in the I/O section today from another poor shlub who just bought an OMC powered VIP with apparently a cracked block

I am also one of those shlubs:(, i bought my boat knowing the deck would need replacing but before i found this site to REALLY know what i was in store for. What i did miss before i started the tear down was the crack in the block on the starboard side just below the head/block line-VERY hard to see in the assembled boat. It does not leak internally or externally SO FAR but i really dont have the warm fuzzy feeling about it. Take the time to really look at the engine while its out and drain the drive and inspect the oil. In the end, i fixed mine, should get a few good years out of it, and i have all the pics for when i go to sell it. FRom what i see here in this forum, a good few of us are in WAY over what the boats are worth in dollars but the experience points for next time? are priceless. Just my 2 cents

lol........you are going to .....it will happen......murphy and his laws just hang out around boat building projects.

and no its not a show stopper......its an easy fix....just dont do it on purpose just to see if you can fix it....lol

as for the year of the cobra.....just look for a serial number tag on it....like on the cover of the motor....it will have the motor number, the transom number and the drive number

ok good cause i already did it. i saw the light! then realized i could also see the driveway through teh tiny little hole. i kicked myself pretty hard already. I have all the numbers off the engine, outdrive, transom plate, etc. where do i go from here? is this just to know what replacement parts to order when i get there?

No way man, all Dad's are rich right! besides i'm pretty sure he'll have a pretty sweet boat handed down to him at a pretty young age.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

post them in the omc forum and ask the guys.....you are looking for a very narrow window in time......but you never know speed, you just may have scored.

ok....dont worry about the hole now.....

after you get everything tore out.....and have sliced your hull in several more places.... what we are going to do .....is duct tape the out side of the hull....yup....duct tape.

then fill the gash with structural peanut butter......then glass over the hull on the inside with 2 layers of csm and one 1708 layer....

then let cure......take off the duct tape.....grind off the gellcoat on the out side and add another two layers of csm from the out side..... then just do a standard gellcoat repair.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

Thanks oops! for the boost of confidence! I cannot believe how wet this foam is and how heavy it is. I'm worried now about where I can stop under the console. He had cut the glass and slapped a piece of plywood down prettyfar up under the dash so of course it's rotten. I'll post some pics and see how you guys think i should do it.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

it is very hard to find parts.....but the other thing is...they allways break....so the drive makes the whole boat allmost worthless....its a real drag about omc's.
you could have a 10k boat....but if it has an omc hanging off the back.....no one wants the boat !

it is an expencive swap unless you get a doaner boat with a merc set up.
everything from the motor back is different.

you need a different shifter,
different exhaust mainfolds (most cases)
different coupler
different bellhousing.

you have to rebuild the transom because the holes are different......there is a kit for this.
you need a new transom plate and outer gymbal and bell
and of course the drive.

total value of this deal today is about 5k.
it can be done much cheaper.....but if you go new parts.....thats what you are looking at.
Nah. If he wants to get rid of the OMC he can repower with an SCI stern drive. It will run him about 2 grand with a 3 yr. warranty & is a direct bolt up with a new pivot housing which is part of the conversion kit. And he won't need anything you mentioned except maybe a new shifter. The SCI is essentially an aftermarket Mercruiser & parts are interchangeable. Just sayin'..................

Wish I had that kind of money to throw at it but I think it's safe to say this boat will hit the water with the original omc cobra!

Yep, I hear ya. But, I'd go ahead & replace the shift cable. Cheap insurance. The way the p.o. maintained his boat, it could be the original cable.

Everyone keeps saying get a lawyer 3 words of advice for you
"Civil Law Suit"
Not sure about there but it only costs around $75 in MS to file one.

Re: New Here, Need HELP!

Hey another question....as far as ordering gaskets and stuff for the engine, do i need to spend the extra money and buy the "marine grade" parts?

can you please supply a link to this?....i know about sei drives... my friend has the rights for this area.....but there is a ton more than just the drive.

inside the motor compartment....everything is different. the transom inner and outers.....the bell housing..the steering linkage....the power steering linkage....the shifter.....the coupler, the exhaust........everything.....

any one of those parts i just mentioned.....is worth about 300 new.

and if you wanna go to the outside.....and start pricing the gymbal.bell....well....that is usually worth more than the drive.

so if you could please educate me on the supply and price of "the conversion kit" i would, (and so would a lot of other people) really appreciate it !

thanks....just post a link to all the parts.
