Re: My Walleye Project - 70's Sea Nymph SS160 1668

Welp, got the 11 smaller transom bolts in, bedded in 5200. Also sealed the bottom seam up. Now waiting for my splashwell drains to arrive today, then to add those thru the transom and flare them out.

Any suggestions on flaring for dummies without flaring tools? I've looked around and have heard of a ball peen hammer...but don't have one. Any other ideas?

I also cleaned up my nasty bulkhead and splashwell with JJV's. Had to rinse them off in the shower  but they look good. Not sure how I will JJV the inside of the hull yet.

It works, but the Moeller flare tool works much better. Just tighten the nut/bolt slowly.......

Hey looking good!

I built the one above and it worked good, just like JB said.. tighten it very SLOWLY and be sure it's all lined up good and stays that way.

Well since we had a few warm(thirties) days headed our way, I decided I wanted to paint! Not sure why, but I have wanted to get some paint on the SN for a while now. So.. I ordered it up.

Used Rusto SE primer - 1 coat

Then used Rusto Marine Topside paint - Gloss black
Thinned out with paint thinner
Added Majic Hardener to decrease dry time, harden paint, and add gloss.
This was WOG's paint recipe - http://forums.iboats.com/boat-restoration-building-hull-repair/1961-lonestar-flamingo-i-finally-started-w-pics-384982-10.html#post3302799

First, I woke up and got the heater going Sat morning. Got up to a nice 55 ish.

Threw some primer on

I definitely went DEXTER on my garage. :D

I put two coats on yesterday, then another today. Then some added touchup. I sanded a little after the second coat which helped in some needed areas.

This was after 1 coat - didn't look bad at all, I was surprised.

Then after 3 coats and touchup tonight, I tore off the tape and drop cloth, and here is what we have!

I thought it turned out pretty good. I cant wait to see it after it cures fully.

Thanks Sig. I hope it turns out as nice as yours! It was definitely an all weekend affair, also with Thursday night being all prep work.

Very nice! Now things will start to come together quite a bit faster once the paint cures. It may take an extra day to cure being down around 60 degrees. Did you use the reducer with the acetone, thinking that would really make the paint thin. I remember having to mix in xylene per the instructions on the rusto can, did the paint lay down good using acetone instead?

The SN is back in black!

Hey JV

Just stopped by and caught up on your thread... Good stuff man!

Making great progress brutha! Hull repair looks solid, and the black paint is sharp!

I see you also have the MBS... Nice score on the Starcraft and the Duracraft parts boat!

Thanks Rob! No reducer just "paint thinner", paint and hardener. It laid down ok...I wish paint would come out quicker, but it could be my compressor isn't large enough...which is a good thing as I dealt with very little running. I'm kind of new to those HVLP guns, so maybe I'm just not used to it/impatient.

that looks great jv! Nice work!

Thanks Fin! I have actually been going through your SS thread when I have time. Nice work to you as well sir. I may be messaging you on some motor questions in the future.

Thanks Cuda I'm tryin man. I wasn't sure about the black, but I do think it turned out sharp. Stealthy as well to sneak up on those wallys!

As for the MBS.....

If the paint did not "come out quick" then either the gun was not set up properly or the paint was not thinned properly. If they're in synch, it should spray twice as much as a spray can and twice as fast. If you're planning on doing more painting this will be a good read for you...

Thanks Show, appreciate it! Ill snap another as the paint is cured now. We'll see if it looks any better ;)

Thanks WOG, that is entirely possible, and probably very accurate. I will use that next time on the SC. I got away with it this time, but I really don't think my compressor is large enough either. Again, could be wrong.

Also, thanks again WOG for your painting recipe. I used the exact spraying recipe.

Re: My Walleye Project - 70's Sea Nymph SS160 1668

Been a little slow lately. Need to finish remodeling a bathroom before the twins arrive (Feb 20th )

Found this during paint: Hull ID# SEA794610476-6R....This would mean the boat was made in 1976 if I am correct...

Put the splashwell drains it bedded in 52, now I still need to flare them out. Waiting for the 5200 to set a bit before I flare them.
