Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

So I've pretty much decided the best way to mount the lounge seat base is to screw it to a piece of ply and then pb that ply to the deck, but I still need to know if the gelcoat can stick to the plastic or if there is a primer I can put on the plastic that the gelcoat will bind to? Also still looking for suggestions on how to handle the trim gaps. Maybe just gelcoat it all and use 5200 as a filler, but I'd like something different

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

How about bolting some 2x4 covered in glass to the base and tab it to the deck from above....I imagine the lounger seat has storage below or the cushion is removable.

If you want to gel the outside....I'm not sure it will stick to plastic. You could wrap the outside with some 1/4" ply,Wrapped in some glass mat and gelcoat that.....you could even tab that to the deck also.... No water will get under it that way;)

I'm not following the rear seat splashwell area... Have a pic of that?

I have never had gel stick to plastic. You can flex the cup you mix it in and it just pops right out. I am not a pro at it just been playing around some. YD or Opps might know a way.

This is true, that's why I didn't know if there was a primer or something that might be effective. I could always buy some white plastic spray paint and paint the lounge frame w that, but I'm just worried about the white not matching the gelcoat color properly

Rick, ill try to get a picture of the splashwell tonight if it stops raining

It is possible. For a good anti-skid I just rolled the gelcoat on. Thats the way that most houseboats are.

i plan to roll it but it still seems slippery when wet in the places i have rolled it already. im just trying to figure out if i should use an additive or do the base coat, fine sand, and then top coat

I dont think it is recommended to gelcoat over epoxy. I have not had any luck with getting epoxy resin to stick to plastic either.

thanks wood, any ideas on how to handle the lounge seat? id like to utilize the abs frame for the seat, but the black will stand out badly i feel. any way/primer to use that will help the gelcoat stick to the plastic, or should i just bite the bullet and buy a plastic spray paint and try to match the color?

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

long week:

here is a dry mockup for the 2nd fuel tank in place. stainless steel staples come in handy for this
IMG-20120508-00170.jpg

things look so messy at times, but this is PB, tabbed, and redgard on the areas to be foamed
IMG-20120510-00204.jpg

and just another shot with everything coated in resin and the tank area gelcoated
IMG-20120511-00210.jpg

and here are the rear seat tops cut and coated, as well as the hatch for the bow deck
IMG-20120511-00209.jpg

tank in place and supported underneath with rubber to promote drainage, and also covered so i dont get resin and gelcoat all over it (i know myself too well)

lids being glued on
IMG-20120512-00216.jpg

lids tabbed on, drains made in the front of each box, and i put a panel in the storage space to the left of the 2nd tank for oil and such
IMG-20120512-00217.jpg

this is just a shot inside the storage area. it clearly needs to be cleaned up
IMG-20120512-00218.jpg

also got my captains seat for a solid deal. its very comfortable
IMG-20120511-00207.jpg

and a very nice stand: height adjustable and slides forward and back
IMG-20120510-00205.jpg

leaving for bermuda sunday so hoping to get the deck gelcoated before we leave. that leavs me a week to atleast get the motor mounted before surgery. at 28 im falling apart

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

On the ABS plastic seat base, you might try wiping it down with Xylene. Careful not to leave it on to long cuz it's very powerful stuff. but it might allow the Gelcoat to adhere. No Guarantees

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

i also had to build side storage pieces

here is a basic mockup
IMG-20120519-00241.jpg

here is the port side glassed in (i did add one more brace in the middle just like the one on the end)
IMG-20120519-00243.jpg

and here is the starboard side with space for the two battery boxes (bc of the bucket seat positioning, after this picture i realized i needed to shorten this side to half as long which wasnt too big of an issue)
IMG-20120519-00244.jpg

and got bored so i went and picked up the other toys
