Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

Yes I was planning to gelcoat the area where the fuel tank goes, the bilge, and the ski locker. Not sure if that's over kill but that was the plan

Nope, those areas are GREAT. Just wanted to make sure you did not think you had to Gelcoat the entire substructure.

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

ok so here is a catch up from the past week (week meaning two days of working on the boat). got allot more done than i anticipated

first of all i needed allittle motivation....
IMG-20120330-00039.jpg

stringers all glasses and capped. i also ground/peeled the 5200 off the bulkhead drains after this picture so it would not interfere with the gelcoating at all. those drains are all filled with PB anyways and a pvc pipe so the 5200 was way overkill
IMG-20120404-00063.jpg

gas tank subfloor with csm on the bottom drying
IMG-20120405-00065.jpg

and here is the ski locker subfloor also with csm drying on the bottom
IMG-20120405-00066.jpg

here are both subfloors laid in and the csm flaps wetted to creat an initial bond

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

next i filled the gaps around the subfloors and used a large pice of 1708 to skin the top and tab them in nice and solid
IMG-20120408-00072.jpg

same shot, just from the other side
IMG-20120408-00073.jpg

then i cut open the drainage slits, did some sanding, cleaned it down with acetone and put the first layer of gelcoat on heavy
IMG-20120409-00075.jpg

after the second coat i used the pva mold release stuff i got from us composites to get the gel coat tack free in the tank area

i didnt take a picture but after this i took some mat made from recycled rubber and cut angled strips and glued them in the fuel tank area. i then placed the tank in and cut the first section of floor that goes over it. i coated the bottom in csm and then painted it with gelcoat to just protect it since it will be a moisture rich area. that first layer is being held down with PB. it was getting dark at this point. i also decide to do what friscoboater did and use redgard where i am going to foam.
IMG-20120409-00078.jpg

i began rushing at this point and was tired as i painted the redgard in the forward areas and forgot to use the pva in the ski locker area on the gelcoat, so ever bit of dirt on my shoes came right off and stuck to the gelcoat, UGH.
IMG-20120409-00079.jpg

today after work im going to sand down the dirt and get that out and put a last coat in the locker area, then i will actually remember to spray or paint the pva on this time.

during the week days this week i hope to get the floor cut and get csm on the underside so i can install it this weekend

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

Update : so I went out to see how the gelcoat dried and everything set except one spot right next to the ski locker drain. Now my question is can you lay gelcoat on existing gelcoat if you have used the pva chemical (mold release) on top already to gain the tack free finish? This is how steve at us composites suggested doing the process. So I'm wondering if I can lay more gelcoat on this small area once its dried and lightly scuffed or now that the pva is one it will the gelcoat not adhere and require me to sand it all off and start over? Its just a small darkened spot that I might put a drain cover on anyways but I want to know for future knowledge. Thanks

I plan to build the bow section in a manner to provide more storage so this pipe will be to add a large drain to the bow

Just another angle of the drain

Everything dry and ready to go

After about 15 mins I realized my 2 gallon kit of expanding pour foam wouldn't be close to enough, so I ran to home depot and got an 8'x4' piece of their water resistant closed cell foam board and cut it up to mostly fill these gaps, then used the pour foam which fill the crevices between the large pieces of foam. The whole thing expanded allot more then I thought it would so I just had to sand the foam down to height

Here is the deck glued in. The gaps on the sides are suppose to be there and will be filled w the PB consistency resin.

Again just the deck glued in

Started running low on cabosil for thickening the resin but I remembered someone saying you could use flour for this, so I took a bunch of flour and it def did the job to thicken the resin and add bulk for the fillets on the side of the deck. At this point more still needs to be added to make a smooth transition from the wood to the side of the hull

deck is now all tabbed in and ready for csm layers on top. hoping to get that done on thursday

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

Uhhmmm...Using flour will work, but is not a good idea. I will make the resin much more susceptible to water absorption. I really recommend trying to find a local supplier or get some cabosil on order for future PB needs.

Wow! Your deck height looks several inches lower than mine....and they are only 2 years difference. Where did you get your red guard I believe it is called?

i understand that. the only place i used it was in the first layer of PB filling between the deck and the hull, i then did a quick sand, and a large tab with 1708, and plan to take the fiberglass i use to cover the deck up the sides, so the area that i used flour will never meet water. every other place on the boat prior to this and after this has/will have strictly cabosil used

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

well i havent posted in awhile bc the weather has been awful. last week i did manage to get the deck glassed in with 2 layers of csm done wet on wet with the seams offset by two feet

last i had started putting PB between the deck and the hull. here, the PB is all there, the deck is tabbed to the hull with 1708, and there is a strip of 1708 put across the seem of the floor in the rear where the two main pieces of the deck come together
IMG-20120417-00116.jpg

and here is the deck with the two layers of csm laid wet on wet. i was pretty happy with how this turned out
IMG-20120420-00117.jpg

here is the front drain with the pvc tube that is sealed and runs down into the ski locker
IMG-20120420-00118.jpg

the weather began to act up again and i finally had it with trying to support a cover nicely, so i ran out and built this quickly for $30. im going to change the build slightly this weekend but this worked great
IMG-20120425-00123.jpg

and here is a shot of the floor after i sanded it smooth today and also cut out the ski locker fully. i also finally sanded out the bow now that i have a plan for how im going to construct it to utilize storage and seating
IMG-20120425-00125.jpg

hopefully this weekend ill get a BUNCH of small things done and start working on installing my secondary fuel tank and building the stern flotation boxes and seats.
