I never thought about painting a galvanized trailer. I just figured you couldn't do it. Cool.

Well there's this:
Painting Galvanized trailer?

George is very helpful too:
Since the trailer was galvanized I would make sure to use a zinc chromate acid wash primer or something else that will etch the zinc well before painting.

This is interesting too:
Paint vs Galvanized

Then there's this:
Stainless steel is a generic term for a low carbon steel that is alloyed with chromium and nickel. There are over 100 different alloys of “stainless” steel of which five or so are used in the production of commercial hardware, only one of which is suitable for use in a marine environment.

Unless you know the composition of the bolt and the properties of the materials in contact with the bolt, it’s best left up to the pros to determine if a hardware substation is in your best interest or not. I can guarantee you that anything you get from a hardware or big box store is not suitable for use in a marine environment or for use on a boat trailer.

Painting a galvanized trailer negates the protection the zinc brings to the underlying steel. The zinc and the oxygen in the air combine to form zinc oxide on the surface. It’s this chemical compound that protects the base metal from rusting. You remover the source of oxygen, you remove the protection. It’s as easy as that.

The cold zinc paints works but the surface needs to be replenished from time to time for maximum affect. At issue is that the zinc paint tends to be very short lived due to the fact that the surface is extremely rough which leaves a lot more surface area exposed causing accelerated erosion of the zinc when compared to a hot dipped, alloyed coating put on at the factory.

I haven't the foggiest what's the best way to proceed if you need to do some rust touch ups or prevention on a galvanized trailer. But I know that you need to wear a noxious fume respirator if you scrape, sand or blast a galvanized metal & glove up ;)

If WOG posted up some prep details, re-post 'em down here were 'we' need 'em ..

GS is right on. Just like aluminum. Acid Wash, SE Primer, Then Paint. White Vinegar and TSP are good Pre Wash substances. Light coat of SE then I would put on a coat for Metal Primer and then color coats.

Basically prep and paint just like I did my allum gunwale trim .. Still got some of the Valspar metal primer , white paint and hardener . :)

Awesome score on the new ride for the MFG...
It is gonna feel right at home riding around to all the future fun fishing and boating spots!

Just my 1/2 penny's worth on painting the trailer...

I personally like the almost zero maintenance quality of galvanized, not to mention that I have read in several places that covering the galvanizing with paint, somewhat reduces its anti-corrosion properties...I don't know for sure how much, or to what extent...or if it is even a concern, since a good coat of paint should also be able to protect the metal...

However, a custom paint matched trailer under the MFG is sure gonna look nice!

Have a great week!:D

Yep I have read some negatives about painting galvanized metal . The link I posted earlier states that if done correctly painting actually helps the corrosion protection . Here is a pic of some sort of gray paint the po put on the trailer .

This is definitely getting sanded off . I just can,t see putting her on an old grey splotchy looking trailer so I got some paint schemes going through my head . I will do a real good cleaning and prep work and hope for the best . If it goes south on me at least I don't have to much money invested in it .

Yeah, I gotta agree on both counts...if the PO already applied some paint and it looks like carp, you might as well cover it up in a nice shiny new hot rod, classic, custom color match/contrast to the MFG...
It certainly deserves to not only be happy on its new ride, but be complimented by it as well...:)

SP, nice trailer you got there. everyone is correct from everything I have read. Once the metal is prepped (read sanded, blasted, all looses carp removed) the first step is wipe down with vinegar to neutralize the acid content of the galvanizing process. Then SE primer and continue as normal.

You're gonna give our trailer a run for it's money with that beauty!

Nice deal on that trailer. That's about perfect for this boat.

I'm a little behind the time here but, what a cool idea to do the deck hardware in white - very unique - love it!

Yeah but your trailer's about done ! I have miles to go ..

Thanks ezm ! It may be just a tad big . But thats better than a tad small I guess .

Well all the original hardware was white from the factory. It was some type of plastic coating that just peeled right off. Would have been nice chromed but painting was quick and easy and matches original ..

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

This primer was highly recommended by the painter that we use at work. They used it on galvanized metal at a church we built. 3 years in the weather all day everyday and no pealing or corrosion anywhere ..

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

My research tells me it's Water Based. It also tells me that it will accept solvent based paints after it cures. I usually don't mix water based paints with oil based paint. Up to you. Personally I would not use it, but hey, I'm just an Old Dumb Okie that's stuck in his ways and not easy to change my ways.

Someday he's gonna have to stop using that crutch :fear::behindsofa::boink:

I'm with Woody, he's done more paint chemical research than anyone I know and I'd go with his judgement on this one.

I gotta go 100% with the above^^^^...If anybody has done research on a subject, any subject, it is WoG...
He may try to fool you into believing he's just a Dumb 'Ol Okie...but that Okie's got some serious tricks up his sleeve...

Finally Friday and the weekend is upon us...may much boat restoration progress be in your immediate future...:joyous:

Yep I can't think of any Dumb 'Ol Okie that's ever gave me bad advice ! :)
OK speaking of advice , I was wondering ,this may be a stupid question, I am gunna need to do some sanding/wirewheeling/grinding on the trailer. Should I try and clean the grease and whatnot off before sanding ? Maybe a good wash with some dawn dish soap or something ?
:washing: Finally got to use the washing machine smiley ! he he he ! :)

Nickle-95 worth of advice here...
No change expected, either...

I personally wouldn't bother with any pre-cleaning, before going to town with whatever you decide to use to scuff the surface, since you are going to need to do it afterwards anyway, before any painting happens...:cocksure:
