Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

OK well you know I could not resist setting the seats in the boat for a dry run . I needed to get them lined up and marked where they will sit and figure out how I should mount them ..These pics show the different ways you can set them up with a few adjustments . I had to slide them to the center a half inch or so so they will clear the gunwales from where I had originally layed them out .They just do clear when you spin the seats .

Now I need to decide how to fasten them down . And I need to fab some sort of fold down legs to support the backs when in lounge position . I have a little cypress laying around maybe put a touch of wood in there might be nice . Time for the hamster to start turning the wheel ..

Nice video, but it sounds like the motor's running a little lean.... Needs more eggnog, I think

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Well I hope everyone had a nice Christmas !
Been kinda slow on the forum lately so I,ll do my best to entertain everyone with some more boring progress ..:numbness:
I decided to just glue in a layer of plywood to the deck to mount the seats to . I will use some angle with ss screws and 5200 to fasten . Got the pieces cut and a coat of resin on both sides . I will grind the gell coat off and pb them down and prolly 2 layers of csm on the top .

I want to roll gell on the deck . Am I gunna have to grind the old gell off ? Sure hope I can get away without grinding !:joyous:

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

? On the transition from the painted gunwales to the gel deck I need to tape a straight line . Can I use reg blue tape ? Will I be able to pull the tape up after the gel cures ? After say 2 coats if it is needed ?
Wax in the gel or pva over the last coat ? :noidea: :)

Don't hold me to it, but, I think I've seen tape used to mask off for gelcoat, and removed after the gel 'sets' but is not yet cured. If possible, use multiple strips of tape, staggered back from your intended cut line. That way multiple coats of gel don't all terminate at 1 hard edge that might be tough to cut & buff smooth

YD (and others) has some good info here: Covers masking, shooting the gel, unmasking, shooting more gel, importance of gun cleanup & PVA vs wax...

Based on that thread, I am close, but not wholly accurate in my description above. Here's a 3M pdf w/ a suggested gelcoat masking schedule

YD may have some additional info that would be important enough to hit him w/ a PM asking him to swing by for some tips

The seats look awesome...can't really go wrong on layout....Although my eye tends to favor the third pic (it's not a huge preference over the others).

P.S. that video was hilarious....

Aren't the seat layout pix all the same seat layout in the boat, and just some of the different set-ups of seat position your bases, mounts, and back rest hinges allow?

All you lack is the support legs for when you lay the back down flat, to allow all those setups?

Scouts honor ! There was no octane booster mixed with the eggnog ! I just got a slow kinda drawn out way of talking especially when on camera .. I am from Flawida ya know .

BTW , thanks for the tape info ! The first link I could not get to pull up . Could not find the server . Might be my service cuss it ain,t the best in the world ..

When I pasted the link, I missed the 1st letter, I'll fix it above, but it should work here too now..

This 1 worked though?

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

JBC ,
The link works fine now . That was pretty interesting thread . They sure make it sound easy . If only it was . LOL!
My plan I think should not be to difficult . I am thinking I will roll 2 coats on . I will tape the actual transition paint to gel first and then tape a second layer maybe an 1/8 or 1/4 " further into the gel area . Roll the first coat then while still wet remove the outer layer of tape probably as I work toward the back of the deck . I assume it would need to dry up before the second coat so I can get back on it . Roll second coat and remove tape while wet . If I do it like this I guess both coats will have to be done with wax . Its prolly give or take about 90 sq ft or so . Do you think 2 qts will be enough or should I get gal ?
Does this sound anything close to a good plan ?
