Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Mr Phelps, You can make those bases "IN YOUR SLEEP"!!! Make the sides from 3/4" ply and rabbet the edges. Then kerf some 1/2" ply to bend around the curves and wet it down with boiling water to make it easier to bend. PB the kerfs and glass everything else. I KNOW it will support My BIG Lard behind so I'm sure it will be fine for a much skinnier you. One weekend and they'll all be done. Wish I was closer, cuz just like you I LOVE doing these kinds of projects.

Pool Update???

Man I wish I could do all this work in my sleep... Cuzz I could really use the rest !
Yep that was the basic plan 3/4 and 1/2 ply prolly just a square corner rounded over if I can find my round over bit ...I am going to bring home the table saw from work because the rip fence on mine is not wide enough. I cut the end pieces and it,s a pretty tight radius so I,m gunna give the hot water thing a try .
I got a blue pool again .:) still a bit cloudy but not the spinach soup I had for a while .
I,ll send you a pm and fill ya in on the details ..

Jbc ,Decker , Troop , CW ,and Mrdj , Thanks Guys !

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Been having to work late seems like every day so boat time is hard to come by . But I did manage to get my windshield mounting stuff ordered .. I also took a stab at the fab on the first seat base .
DSC00861.jpg

I had to do the boiling water trick to get it to bend properly .. As you can see I had some of the kerfing pop loose along the edge on one side . I think I can just clean it up then fill it with some hairy pb lay some mat over it to hold the shape then take it apart to glue it back together ..
Tomorrow,s Friday ! :) Can,t wait for the week oooooh forgot gotta work Satuday !
Fla - Ga weekend !!! WOOOHOOO ! GO GATORS !!!:p

Okay, hold the fort. Seat bases? Come on now, seat bases aren't round. Just kidding, I can't wait to see the finished results. Nice!!

Well, it looks like you had a good NAP. Those bases are Just How I had imagined them. Some filler and CSM and they'll be as good as the Splashwell. So... what do you think the weigh???

TC that makes two of us wanting to see the finished results ! :) I was hoping they look at least somewhat original . I,m thinking of bringing the white stripe right down on them to match the seats. The swivel seat mounts I bought do not lock into position so I,m kinda rethinking those . Maybe they wont move to much while underway ..

Wood , I weighed one of the seat backs on a bathroom scale the other day and it weighed 9 lbs . So 72 lbs plus whatever the the bases weigh . Just a wild guess 8 or 10 lbs a piece maybe .. 112 + or - ..

My Seats with the posts in the pyramid bases don't lock and I had no issues when doing hard turns etc. I think you'll be fine. I think those bases are really kool. I wish I'd seen them before I build the pyramids.:(

Hey SP, Like everyone else has said, great looking seat base. The white stripe will be cool.
How deep did you cut the kerfs in the wood. You might try alittle deeper and see if the wood will bend easier.
With all the PB and glass on them, I would think it should hold up well. Might even be stronger than the wood.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks GT ,Im not sure about a new level but I am having a great time fixing up dads old boat ! Even with all the grinding and sanding it sure is a lot of fun ! It still amazes me how guys like Andgott can can just fly thru these projects and the finished product turn out so well !

Decker,
I kerfed as far as I could go right down to the last ply.. But the hot water really worked well getting it to bend !

Pmc , jbc ,
Thanks gentlemen !

Wood.
Well you could always fire up that awesome new table saw and build ya a set . Not that you need to add to your list of to do,s .. The only drawback that I might run into is maybe stubbing my toes on one of the corners ..

Been thinking a little on how I want to mount these to the deck .. One idea was to cut a piece of 3/4 or 2 pcs of 1/2" ply about an inch smaller than the inside edges of the box .. Glass that to the deck then offset some allum or stainless angle mounted on the inside then screwed down to the pad .. This will help keep whatever stored up off the wet deck and allow for some drainage around the edges . Prolly a million ways to mount em ..

Sounds like a plan. You could add just alittle more glass on all 4 corners about 2" out each way and have a slight gap on the base and the deck to help get rid of any water. Just a thought.

Troop I just boiled water in a pot and slowly poured it over the kerfs then eased it down and stuck a screw in to hold it .
I think the storms gunna be worse up north when it hits . All we are getting is some wind and some big surf ! :)

Decker that,s a good idea on the glass build up at the corners..

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I was looking around on youtube the other night and saw someone doing nickle plating. I thought about your cleats. Just wonder if it would work for you. He just had a tub of hot water and 2 "D" cell batteries and a few chemicals. Looked pretty easy.
You might do a google on it.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

^^^ Thats an idea I have not thought of Decker.^^^
Here is a few pics of todays progress .. Both my teams took one on the chin so I may as well get something accomplished this week end ..
Bending the plywood around the end pieces can be a pain if it,s not lined up and square . So I cut 2 boards to the inside dimension and screwed them down to my work table. Screwed one side panel on then used a framing square to line up the other end piece ..
DSC00862.jpg

After that I made sure the plywood piece was centered on the end piece and used the square to make sure the ply was in plane with the end piece . Then repeat on the other side ..
DSC00863.jpg

Got all 4 fabbed, bent and ready to clean up and glass .
DSC00867.jpg

I can fit an adult sized life jacket inside with room to spare ..

Nice job on the oval and the seats. If and when there's a next time, cut your kerfs so that only One layer of plywood is left. That's really all thats needed since the filler will ad the needed strength. Also the grain of the top ply should be running parallel with the direction of the bend to keep it from cracking. Just some things my years of woodworking have taught me.;)

For any one else that's interested, here's some instructions that reflect exactly what Mr. Phelps just showed you
