Yep I,ve seen this brochure before . If they would have made the transom with out using wood they could last forever without touching them..Other than a few hairline stress cracks the deck is solid as a rock..

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Maybe I do need a support group
For this:
GT, Troop ,Thanks I can,t wait to start sewing !

Or this:
BTW I have a trooper like experiment going on with some foam I will share later..

Continued excellent work going on @ your place. I used your's as an excellent example of resurrecting a glasser yesterday.... That 1st test fit pix of the hardtop fitment, w/ the boat painted & rolled out in the sun. Still love that 3/4 view from a slightly elevated position.

If the seats are 1/2 the caliber of the glassing work, they'll look great! What have you picked as a layout for the vinyl, & color?

Based on that It does not appear they "Foamed" your hull. Foam was in the stringer system. Man that is one "Tank" of a boat.

Jbc.
Prolly both quotes ..

Pmc.
Could I still retain my man card if I change my quote to " can,t wait to start plowing sharp metal needles thru the vinyl with heavy duty UV resistant string to build an awesome place to plant my rear end "..
I would sure hate to loose the MC..

Just add randomly accelerated between plowing & sharp...... then add via a foot operated throttle control device after needles....

Then I'd call your MC standing as safe & secure ;) See ya already got a support system in place :)

Thanks Jbc, I don't know what I would do without ya ! :D

I got the other side of the jump seat backing all glassed in this afternoon. I need to stop at the fabric store to find some 2" foam for the j-seats ..

On a bright note the boss gave me some homework to study . First phase of a multi phase project . Got a meeting to go over scheduling tomorrow and start framing in a few weeks. WAHH HUUU!! Should keep us busy for a while ...:)

Outstanding, & BTW:
W/ Envy
I much prefer print reading & job walks to talking on the phone & sales

Multi-phase is good, & I just noticed an article on MSN about home builders optimism... Going to have to find that & have a good sit & read...

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

OK , here is my very unscientific exspearament . I have been soaking 2 pieces of foam and a piece of seacast in a mosquito larva hotel for over a month or so. The smaller piece of foam was the factory foam that was taken out of the gunnel area . I assume a 2 part expandable pour in foam. The larger piece is reg great stuff foam from a can.
DSC00750.jpg

I cut the pieces in half as even as possible and squeezed as much water out as I could until it stopped dripping from my hand .
As you can see the great stuff can foam absorbed less water than the factory foam.
DSC00753.jpg

On another note the can foam seemed to float much higher in the water than the other.
Then I dried the surface of the seacast and cut a slice off and I can safely say it absorbed zero water. It has been in the water ever since I poured the transom .
DSC00754.jpg

I know this is a silly exspearament but I still found it interesting .

I also decided to paint the waterproofing paint on the seat backing after I glassed it just for the heck of it.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Maybe un-scientific, but very, very interesting...my only conclusion is that the original foam from the boat is almost 45 year old chemical technology, and the spray can stuff is modern chemical technology...???...yet they both seem to absorb water...even thought the modern stuff, sort of seemed to absorb a bit less...the true test would be to soak the modern version of the 2 part foam that is sold now for the same purpose...Hmmmmm??????

Question, what did you use to keep the pieces submerged?
and, even with the water in them, do they still float?

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I didn't try to keep them submerged and they both floated. I agree the new type pour in foam is probably far superior to the old stuff. I think Troop may have some foam floating around maybe before we,re all said and done he could do a more accurate assessment of the two. Same sized / weight and maybe all edges with whatever skin trimmed off . :)

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Now that's even more interesting, they were just sitting there floating on the water and they both still absorbed water...now I am even more curious as to the effect of foam that is forced to be submerged under hydraulic pressure, if it would tend to absorb even more, and how waterlogged does it have to get before it won't float anymore???

This is all your fault S.P...now you got me thinking...and we all know how bad that can be...

Happy Friday:D

I can cut some 1" cubes and test that way? I have plenty of that 2PF laying around.

I for one think you had a very cool experiment!

Woo Hoo You started!!!! Play with your tension settings on both the Bobbin and the top stitch. Also the presser foot pressure. I used #20 needles. Practice makes perfect. Also practice with different # of layers and keep notes on settings. they will change with different thickness. Make sure the machine is Oiled and cleaned.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

It would appear that at no time were you sewn to any red vinyl, so I'd say a pretty good go of it! Can't be any harder then recrafting the stern, splashwell and seats of a vintage MFG boat. Right?

Practice straight stitching & running around a curve........

Wiil do Wood I need to find the right type zipper foot. It went thru 4 layers ok but I ran out of thread in the bobbin spool during the vid. I also need to go online and find a manual for this machine..
Btw, jaguars rookie J Blackmon looks like the real deal in his first pre season game . Touchdown first drive of the game !
