Looks like I'm gonna have to put it off a few months.
But When I do I'll post a new thread.

Anyway, nice work.
Make it happen Cap'n!

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Thanks everyone for the kind words !
It feels very strong . I can stand on it and it does not move or flex at all . I hope the fairing and paint turn out well...
I guess we'll be talking paint again pretty soon been thinking on adding 2 white stripes on the bow to kind of match the stripe thats going on the seats .
Have a great week everyone !!

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Ok I need some opinions . With the 2 tone seats I need to decide the color of the gunnel walls white or green. I think the white would give more contrast to the seats but the sun glare would be kinda bad. I am rolling white gell coat on the deck and the seat bases will be curved and painted probably green . I may even paint the white stripe on the bases also.I also have been thinking of way's to move some weight forward. Is it kosher to sit on top of tank full of gas? I may do a early unmotorized mini splash with some weight on the transom to see how it sits in the water. How much do you think that 85 force weighs ? Its been so many years since i've seen it floating I cant remember how it sat with the chrysler..

Have you considered the Zolatone look of splatter paint @ interior:

Paint field white, medium splatter w/ the green, lightly over splatter w/ a mix of green & white &/or your deck color...... Deck, seat boxes, and gunwale sides.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I have considered a splater type paint maybe on the sides but not on everything. I'm kinda going for a cruiser like look instead of a fishing boat look if that makes since. I will fish out ofthis boat but most of our fishing will be with fsil's tri hull glassmaster. Is the zolatone actual paint or would I use the paint that I have?

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Zolatone was either a brand name like Pepsi, or the process by which it was applied. Andgott & others mimic'd it by painting wet on wet with whatever paint you were using for deck, gunwales & cap. It let the splatters flatten out INTO the field color, rather then flecks sitting on top of the field color.

It was a regular finish on the interiors of many 60's boats, my FireFlite had it originally. White field, w black flecks & 2 shades of gray. It may have been some type of gelcoat.

Not to encourage lazy craftmanship, but the splatter effect helps minimize minor defects in the substrate it's applied to.

A weight & balance mini float sounds like a great idea. Got battery & a sm trolling motor? No reason not to putter around at the ramp:)

If I was to consider under seat gas tanks, I'd probably install them as under deck permanent tanks rather then portable cans. Ventilation fumes etc etc etc.... But maybe that could be ballast under the passenger seat to off-set solo cruising listing to the starboard...

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I like the old school look of the Zolatone...that would look sharp and you can prolly tone the white down with a slightly heavier application of the secondary colors...

BTW, I found this while checking around on the net... http://www.zolatone.com/home/

And I'm sure this isn't the exact same engine as yours, but I found this... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=412064 ... says it weighs 255 pounds...

Wow, a 1973 slectric Johnson 115 is 'only' 262lbs, don't ask how I know that:facepalm:. That must be a Merc derived Mariner 85hp at 255lbs.....

The Zolatone site looks interesting, Thanks GT

Jbc maybe I will do a test zolatone and see if I warm up to the idea..
And is a permanent tank a good idea with gas/oil mix. Is that done often? Bow tank would be nice but not sure if the fuel pump on motor would work at that distance.

GT,
My uneducated guess was at about 280 lbs . I was close thanks for the link !

I don't know about the fuel pump concerns with a bow tank, but the tin fellas are using a bunch of bow tanks w/ OB's and I don't think the are all running VRO tanks, so some are certainly using pre-mix.

I don't know if that answers your questions, but hope it helps.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

My tank's in the rear, built-in you might say, and I'm a pre-mix user...

From what I have read, bow tank and fuel pump go together just fine...remember, the nose of the boat is almost always up, compared to the stern, and if all of your fuel lines are new and leak free, you should not have any problems...once you prime the line with the fuel bulb, as long as you don't suck air, and the fuel pump is up to snuff, it should have no problemo keeping the engine fed...

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Hey sp ... I was going to do the inside of my hull with that Zolatone pattern and tried it on that cabinet under the bow and it was not easy. I give Andgott a lot of credit he did a great job. I tried taping the brush with a stick and tried taping the stick with the brush wet on wet, wet on dry and I finally gave up. I just couldn't get a consistent pattern going. I don't know if they have a spray that does it out of a can or something but I tried it by hand and didn't like the way it came out. It might be different for you but I would suggest you practice on something first and see if you like how it comes out. Just my 2 pennies.

It's kinda hard Troop to surf and take vid at the same time but I'll try and get the wife or fsil or daughter to come with me and take some.I got these pics laying around of a 20 or so year old S.P. Took these when I could still surf and wasn't quite so fat.LOL.!

At 47 I have slowed down alot but will surf until I can't paddle anymore. 29 years of construction has taken it's toll on my joints ya know!
