Layer of csm and a little bigger layer of 1708. I have not used the 1708 yet I had a hard time getting it to wet out good . I have used some biaxle cloth and it worked well. 1708 is some thick stuff!

Hey sp ..... I am not an expert as you know but I read somewhere that if you lay down 1708 you need to have csm down first. I won't be offended if someone was to correct me but I thought that you never put down 1708 without csm first.

I did csm first then 1708.. The first corner tab was 4" each side csm, 2cd layer csm was 6" each side then 1708 at about 9" or so. I think that was ok for the corner..I guess..

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I had a bit of a problem with 1708 I installed yesterday . It did not wet out completely and it did not bond well. It had to go.

The csm bonded very well.

The only thing I can think of is I had the stuff stored under the boat while I was wet sanding and it got some water sprayed on by accident . Not saturated but a little damp .I layed it out in the sun and let it dry . So I thought! I got a little of it a while back . It looked like it had been in the store for awhile.
Oh well grind ,reglass and keep on truckin! :)

That is a bummer. Looks like it peeled off easy, probably wise to pull it out.

Yeah wet cloth is a NO NO!!!! 1708 Drinks Resin!!!! The nice thing is glass fibers won't lift so you can roll harder to get the resin to get down into it. Try to start at the top and work down. You might try a bondo spreader or plastic putty knife to kinda squeegee the resin into it too!

I did pre wet the mat side then rolled light coat on the area set it in place and then rolled more resin on 1/4 " roller and followed with the bb. It didn't feel right from the start.. Seemed no mater how hard I rolled it just wasn't wetting out..

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Any chance there wasn't enough resin to fully wet it out?

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

You can put the 1708 down without putting a first layer of the csm. 1708 has the csm all ready on it. The csm on the 1708 is only 3/4 oz and it will not give as good of bond as it could if you put a layer of the csm down first. It will bond much better if you do the lay up as wet on wet.

SP it will help to wet out the csm on the 1708 before you put it in place. If you do this, it makes it a little harder to handle and it will stretch on you but it makes it alot easier to wet out.
If you can do wet on wet it is easier to wet out the 1708.
Don't try to rush the resin give it a little time to soak in the 1708 and use the bubble roller to go over it and help the resin to soak in and push out the air.

Did you pull all the 1708 off the next day. If so was the resin still wet. If it was still wet did you forget to put in the mekp.
Just a thought.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

From your description the 1708 was bad due to moisture or something else. If it would not absorb the resin then the cloth was previously contaminated by something else. Keep your cloth dry and warm.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Stopped by a different boat supply place on the way home. They didn't have any biaxle so just decided to get some 24 oz woven. So I layed another layer csm then the woven cut and layed at 45 deg angle then layer csm and another layer woven set square. It will get more csm on top. That should be pretty strong I think.

Had some resin left so pb and patch the rest of the old seat mount holes in deck.
