Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Thanks Wood ..
Got my son to help me set the motor on the transom before he had to go to work. Looks pretty good everything from side to side is tight but working..

OK time to tilt the motor..

Welp back to the drawing board. LOL !! I was afraid of that. I have to go out or down with the front of splash . I think I may cut the sides of the opening at a little more of an angle on the transom..

I was afraid of the tilt. Shouldn't be too bad of a fix. Looking at the las pics you have plenty of vertical support. Once everything fits you actually could glass right over the cardboard doncha know!!!!;)

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Well while I was mowing the grass I had time to think about plan B on the splash. Sorry for the crude mock up . I only had time for one side because well diner was ready! I think I will use the old splash with some modification . The x'ed out area at the seat will get cut out and I may use the cut piece on the side sloped edge of the splash. The red tape is where a vertical support will be. I kinda like this plan better than the other cuss it gets rid of the kinda boxy look .

I like this set up, better than the first one...I agree it looks less boxy...

Just a thought, but you could hinge the lower part of the seat to swing up and make access under them easier...I don't know, whatcha think?

And. if you want to make the tops of the new splash well match the rounded front part, you could use PVC pipe to form the mold...

I really like the use of space...good thinking...

Hinged seat base sounds good . Ya think I can domost of the fab with 3/8 or 1/4 " ply? I do want the flat part behind the seats strong enough to step on..

I think either choice will work fine, especially after adding all the layers of CSM, 1708, and PB fillets...

If anything, you could either double up any high stress areas or just use some 1/2" for extra strength in specific places...

You could mock up the final framing design on a buck outside of the boat and test it for weaknesses...

Whatever you do it will prolly end up being strong enough for an ox to jump on...;)

1/4" ply with 2 layers of CSM, a Layer of 1708 and a final layer of CSM will be Plenty Strong. Like I said, I've seen people use Cardboard as the base and lay up CSM, 1708, CSM 1708, CSM and it was totally strong.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Thanks GT , Wood..

I decided to not take a chance on the motor hitting the sloped edge of the transom so I am cutting about 1" to nothing on each side. While cutting thru the glass and smurf my poor ryobi angle grinder finally bit the dust.. :( It was on the way out for a while the shaft lock fell off a few weeks ago and has been on life support since.. Guess I'll pick up an elcheapo from H/F tomorrow.

Ahhh No .. Smoke and sparks were pouring out I'm pretty sure it's toast!LOL! I've had it for at least 6 or 7 years using on heavy ga. metal stud framing. I think I got all the goodie out of it!:D

Splash fab work is kicking my rear ! All the angles and slopes . Hopefully get everything cut and temp assembled tomorrow. Got it worked out with no vertical post going to the deck. Looks much better! Maybe some pics tomorrow..

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

A little ruff around the edge's and I only got one side cut out. I hope plan C is a keeper.. I cut a recess out of the top edge of the transom to allow 1/2" ply to lay flush and add extra support.

I'll cut out the rest tomorrow sand down the ruff stuff and hopefully get a layer of csm on the under side of everything..
Hope everyone has a productive and fun weekend!

wow SP, love the seat idea! what a great use of space. Who ever says you'll never use that advanced math in the real world should be pounded. You're doing a great job on a complex equation.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

That looks Killer, S.P.

By the time you get it all glassed in and faired, it is gonna look like it came that way from the factory, only WAY better built...

Very nice!
