Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Well guys I need your input . The seats are going to have a small curve on the back and bottom . I have kerfed some 1/2" plywood. Should I bend the ply kerf side in?
DSC00361.jpg

Or kerf side out?
DSC00362.jpg

It bends better kerf out and my plan is to build a proper jig out of 2x fasten the edges down to hold shape . Mix pb and fill in the kerfs flat then layer of csm with wax so I can pull from jig sooner to make the next piece.
I'm trying to keep the weight down so do you think 1 layer of csm would be enough?

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

There's so little surface area, I'd probably do PB & layup 2 layers of CSM all wet on wet. Total CSM for 2 seats & 2 layers will be just over a yard. And that's guessing the backs are both 24"X24", and they're probably not quite that large.

How are you keeping the ply bent while you layup the PB, resin & CSM?

Kerfs in will be harder to hold in the curve shape, and still keep the kerfs full of PB, with out lots of squeeze out. Which will make it hard to do the CSM layups wet on wet.

Kerfs out, when you fill the kerfs w/ PB, smooth it some & layup the CSM X2, the kicked PB & CSM will keep the kerfs spread open, and then you can easily put 1 layer of CSM on the smooth un-kerf'd face of the ply.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

There going to be probably 18"x 18 or 19 " becouse the foam I have is 18" . 2 layers on kerf side and 1 on unkerfed side sounds like a good plan. I will probably make a jig out of 2 peices of 2x4 . Bend the plywood over and put a screw as close to the edge as possible and just try not to cover with glass..

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Start w/ your ply wider then you need by 1.5"+/-

Kerf all but the last 1.75" on either side just like you have in your mock up pix above. Then run a kerf 3/4" in from either edge. This will give you a space between the kerfs you'll fill w/ PB & the outside edge of your finished seat, and a parting line of sorts to run a razor knife along that 3/4" in kerf to trim the CSM & resin as it starts to kick (while it's still kind of soft). This will give you a nice place to run screws, and not cover w/ glass. Then once kicked & rigid, you can run the edge along the fence of your saw & cut thru the remaining ply in the kerf from the other side, and then cover the 'back' with 1 layer of CSM....

Just be sure to include the thickness of the saw blade in the 3/4" parting line kerf measurement. Otherwise your seat will be 1/8-1/4" narrow of the finished dimension you had planned.

Hope this ^^^ helps! Have a great week, looking forward to seeing some sewing on that fancy pink Morse!

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I think I read on JDA's pontoon seat thread he use's a electric carving knife to cut foam. So I decided to give it a shot.

This is some very dense foam and it worked very well !
Hope the Mrs don't mind using her knife!

Should be pretty comfy when finished!

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

So many rebuilds making so much progress, add in quite a few sewing & I can't keep track. Or keep up, of course my efforts are split.

Seats look like they will definitely be comfy!

Have a great weekend....

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Thanks Jon, picking up the vinyl tomorrow afternoon!

I didn't get much done today. Had to help fsil move the storage shed we put together about 5 miles down the road to a different place. Then we replaced the brake pads on his pickup.
Was able to get all the pieces cut and kerfed for the sets . Still need to radius the corners.

I'm trying to decide which trailor to use for the MFG .

Nice job on the kerf cuts...

The first trailer looks like it is more adjustable to afford a nice custom fit for the boat...the second one reminds me of the one that came with my boat...biggest reason I didn't like it was that it sat too high and the angle of the bunks, made loading and unloading a real PITA...

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

The first one was a trailor my brother bought for the boat. It seems maybe a bit small. Maybe I can just add a little more beefed up bunks. 2x6 and a little longer. The bottom one came with the Legend .I would have to adjust the bunks somehow and maybe add some of those Y looking rollers to catch the bow.

The foam for the seats looks thick. Should make for a easy ride.
If you have access to a cutting torch and welding rig you could extend the first trailer very easy.

I have a wire feed type welder. Would you extend the front or the back?
This might be a project for the trailor and towing forum..

I think it would be a good thread for the trailer forum, just like there is a ton of good info here on resto's, same applies over there...

My first question is the trailer galvanized? Only becuase you have to take a couple of precautions when welding, but other than that, it is a pretty straight forward process...although...

I think it looks like a pretty good fit just how it sits...maybe install an extra set of bunks, just inside the ones that are there, to help spread the load, replace the hardware with galvanized or SS...and the other possible mod...I noticed the bogey on the other trailer is in better shape, maybe transfer it to this one??? or at least the axle and springs?

The biggest problem I found, besides the PITA factor, on my original second trailer, was the amount of money it would have taken to make it work...since it doesn't have that much framing to it, you would have to add crossbraces to mount the necessary bunks, etc...

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

If I was going to do it I would extend it in front of the axle. It looks like the axle needs to be futher back under the boat.
As far as it being galvanized you just need to grind it off untill you get to the metal.
What type of wire feed welder do you have. Will it get hot enough to pentrate the metal.
I would add about 2 feet in front of the axle and the first roller.
