Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

All the shows that follow paint work on auto/truck have 'bake' booths to speed the cure of the paint. UV? Temp? Both? Sorry, cant be of more help. But at 70, it may take 2 wks +/- for full cure..

I'd think no compound for sure on fresh paint.
This came up under a google search: boat paint cure time wet sand buff DIY

Do not sand or buff Interlux Perfection if it's cured more than 2 days at 73 degrees.

Interlux gives max times for sanding:

"Apply 2-3 coats of Perfection (depending on color) following the proper dry times. Perfection may be applied by roller and brush using the roll and tip method. Sand between coats with 320-360 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue with a rag dampened with Brushing Thinner 2333N.
If maximum times are exceeded, sand with 320-400 grade (grit) sandpaper. For the best results it is recommended to sand between coats."

If you attempt to buff before final cure you REALLY need to know what you are doing so sanding is the preferred method BEFORE cure and before the final coat..

As stated by others Perfection is similar in it's cure characteristics to Awlgrip.. Once the final coat is cured do not sand or buff or you'll need another coat..

This stuff is not intended to be buffed after cure and Interlux will tell you this. It really should be in the instructions but it's not..

The paint you used may also be 'designed' for a certain gloss level & polishing/buffing for a boat show shine may not produce the expected results.

I'd call Vlaspar's (?right?) help line & ask them. Depending on where in the US, they may still be there tonight.....

Try to PM WOG &/or GT1M so that as soon as they log on next it'll hit 'em....

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I would NOT buff the Paint for at least a Month. I have not buffed mine but I have "Clayed" the surface and it worked great. Smooth as a babys butt. All I'm planning on doing is using the spray on wax and doing a light buff. Nothing very agressive. My finish is very High gloss. But based on what I can see from the Chip(*&*@#**#@**#*$@#**@#*) that I got the paint is fully cured and hard as nails.

Thanks Wood I saw on another thread you were talking about the clay. I think you just rub on the paint until it stops sticking and runs smooth. Where can I find the clay?

Autozone. It comes with it's own lubricant but basically it's just water with some liquid soap in it. Spray it on and rub the clay. It takes off any little nubs and imperfections. Worked great on mine but I let the paint cure for a month before I did ANYTHING to it.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Hey S.P.

Definitely Looks Primo!!! Very nice Job!

Now, to cut and buff...

like WOG said, Don't for at least a month, unless the paint you used tells you otherwise...even though the paint is dry to the touch, it can continue to outgas V.O.C.'s for a long time afterwards...if in doubt, check online with the manufacturer...what all that means is that while the surface of the paint is hard to the touch, it may still be soft underneath...

I will find out at work tomorrow, what actual products our Detail guy is using, and what the appropriate steps and tools are, and post them here... it isn't anywhere near as complicated as rocket science, but if it ain't done right, it could blow up in your face, and that would suck!

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

H/T was painted with a foam roller . WOG,s patented roll and roll method.

PS, sorry about all the dbl post I,m getting some kind of interference on signal from router at the other end of the house. It keeps drifting on and off line and is VERY annoying! Were going to try and move the comp to try and git better signal..

I'd say you could conduct classes on the Roll n' Roll Technique of applying Valspar with hardener and have a lot of eager students. THAT is a NICE lookin H/T. How's the underside? Just as Good???

I,M NOT WORTHY ! I,M NOT WORTHY! Thanks professor WOG ! I only have 1 coat on underside and the prep work is nowhere close to the top. Gunna do a little faring along the main support legs then let hair go with the hide on the rest with another coat of paint.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Yep, this^^^ is true. But...I never claimed it was my technique. Sorry if everyone has assumed that. If memory serves me correct the roll n' roll technique was first brought to light, at least for me, by fellow iBoater drewpster. I believe his wife actually came up with the technique while helping him paint his boat. I take no credit for it, I just used what I read and passed it on with my experiences. His dark blue paint job had a very impressive reflective finish with no noticeable roller or brush marks that really impressed me so I started to play with it and learned how to do it. That was almost 4 years ago.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Well I had herd of roll and tip but not roll and roll. The first time I read it was on one of Woods post. If it was drewpster,s wife or who ever bless them for an easy and impressive technique !

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I can't find the thread on roll & roll. Is it rolling one way, then roll 90 degrees to the first?
